HOW CAN A PIECE OF FURNITURE IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH?

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 01

Page 5: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Being able to alternate between standing and sitting at work is widely recommended. Unfortunately, most jobs don’t offer more than a large desk and a chair. Sitting all day has been shown to weaken the immune system, as well as cause a decrease in stamina and energy levels.

Standing at work is a simple way to improve your health and there should be a simple product that encourages it.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 02

Page 6: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

People that aren’t working in a large offi ce don’t invest in the current adjustable desk models. Instead

they save money by creating their own home made versions. These compensatory behaviors show

that people have a big need for a simple stand-up desk that doesn’t take up a lot of space.

THE CURRENT MARKET

HOME & OFFICE ENVIRONMENT

Many solutions exist for the larger offi ce environment, but these products are very

expensive and aren’t very practical in a smaller home offi ce or studio setting.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 03

DESIGN GOAL Create a simple standing desk for those working in studio or home offi ce environments.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 04

Page 8: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

CAD MODELSWe decided, in order to keep it simple and save space, we would make

something that would lean up against a table, taking up minimal fl oor space.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 05

Page 9: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

MOCK UPSWe made a fi rst model to see how it would work in the studio. Working on it we

realized that it’s nice to save space, but more importantly, it’s better if it can also

stand alone.

Our second model had an interchangeable back leg

that allowed it to stand on it’s own.

In order to keep a simple

aesthetic, we had to remove

moving parts. We also made

sure the angles were versatile

enough to fi t on different table

heights and comfortable for

people of all heights to use.

FIGURING OUT DETAILSWe made a hidden thread detail that not only allows for the back legs to be swapped out, but also adjusts the angle of

the podium surface.

The fi nal production model is made with cork, lathed oak, and lacquered steel. It is lightly treated so the simple and functional beauty of each material will show through. The soft tones of the wood and cork contrast with the lacquered steel to create an energetic piece that inspires use.

HOW CAN WE CREATE A BETTER COFFEE STEEPING EXPERIENCE?

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 11

Page 15: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

The pour over method is great for a quick cup of clean coffee. It does not have as rich a fl avor as a french press, but it fi lters out the grounds much better.

The french press allows for steeping which allows the greatest amount of fl avor to be pulled from the coffee bean. However the french press produces a dirtier cup of coffee.

Combining the best of two brewing methods.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 12

Page 16: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Figuring out the steep & release method

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 13

Because we were combining two methods of brewing, we had to make sure the action was as simple as possible. We decided on a seal to trap the coffee in the top, and with a simple quarter twist it would open up and release the coffee.

HOW CAN A BIRDHOUSE HELP PEOPLE CONNECT WITH NATURE & EACH OTHER?

A BIRDHOUSE FOR THE CITY

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 17

A growing majority of the population live in cities. Living in a city offers many benefi ts, but this environment also serves to separate us from nature and build indifference to the people around us.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 18

Page 22: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 19

Fences are necessary at times, but separate us from each other and bring a grim aesthetic to the city. But being that they are prevelent in cities, is there a way they can connect us rather than separate us?

Birds are finding ways to live in cities. But theyneed more permanent places to live in the city.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 20

Can a birdhouse ‘grow’ on a fence like a vine?

Can it replace brokenfence slats?

Could it connect buildings?

Ideation

Page 24: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 21

How to plant a birdhouseIt is very simple to plant on any fence. Just attach the back to the front and twist. Then plant any climbing vine you wish.

By making it two separate pieces it requires that one person from eachside of the fence work together to connect it. This allows people to connect with each other while they work together to beautify the city.

1. Connect 2. Twist!

Then plant any climbing vine.

connections to an environment that desperately needs it.

HOW CAN A COAT RACK ADAPT TO A FAMILY’S CHANGING NEEDS?

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 23

Page 27: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

had previously created the ‘Thread Series’consisting of cafe and bar stools with a cafe table. Our goal was to add another member to the Thread Family.

We wanted to use the threading aspect of the stools to create a fun, interactive coat rack that would adjust to the changing needs of everyday life.

ADDING TO THE FAMILY

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 24

Page 28: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Ideation & Mock-upsJust as in the Thread Family stools, we wanted to design features of the coat rack that used the thread to create fl exibility and infi nite adjustment possibilities.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 25

Page 29: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

The fi nal production model is made of a

long walnut thread that connects with

a powder-coated steel base. The green

and blue were chosen as accents against

the dark color of the walnut. The platforms

give a place for keys, etc. while the wire

hangars are adjustable to meet the

family’s needs.

HOW CAN A DEVICE REDEFINE THE WAY CLIMBERS EXPERIENCE THE OUTDOORS?

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 27

Page 31: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

This project began as an exploration of outdoor lighting solutions.

Climbing gear is a very specialized fi eld. From the shoes to the harness, cams, and quick draws, everything has to be top quality and preform at its best all the time. Climbers hold their life saving equipment to the highest standards. Climbing and hiking at night can be especially dangerous, so what kind of lights do climbers use?

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 28

Page 32: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

We found that although Black Diamond’s hardware is top quality and industry leading in some categories, their lighting does not hold the same quality and perception. We needed to elevate their lighting to the level of the rest of their equipment.

Researching Black Diamond Lighting

Looking at brand, current products, place in the market, and what the competition is doing.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 29

Page 33: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

This is Chad.Chad is a hard core climber. When he’s not at work, he’s exploring, climbing new routes, fi nding new canyons, and always pushing his skills further.

We went through his gear with him to learn what he liked and why, looking for style and characteristic cues from his other climbing gear. Chad’s gear has to be hassle free. He didn’t like his headlamp because it’s performance wasn’t worth the hassle of wearing it, but sometimes it was necessary to use at night.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 30

Page 34: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Looking Through Chad’s Eyes

Light coming from the head makes unnatural shadows.

Head lamps have spot settings and wider area lights, but even these are turned into bright spot lights when up against the wall.

Visual communication between climbers is impaired.

Communication between climber, belayer, and others is very important, but at nights it’s much more diffi cult to communicate with just head lamps.

We took what we learned from the interview and went climbing at night to see what the issues were. We identifi ed 4 main problems when using a head lamp.

Line of light does not match line of sight.

Head lamp beams only move when your head moves. Looking at your feet to fi nd a hold is diffi cult.

Even wider beams are bright spots when on the wall.

Head lamps usually have a softer area light setting, but up against the wall it’s all the same bright, spot.

Beginning Ideation

One handed operation When you’re on the wall Form Studies

We focused our initial ideation into 3 categories. After this ideation we each split into our own individual directions.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 32

Page 36: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Seeing a Bigger NeedOur focus on ease-of-use and proximity to the wall was very useful, but after further interviews with Chad and other climbers, I realized that there were bigger issues surrounding a climbing trip than just a headlamp not having a wide enough beam.

Exploring new areas is at the core of what Chad does. But a thick route book that goes out of date isn’t the most useful, lightweight thing to carry around.

Even directions that look easy on the map can be tricky on the ground, especially at night.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 33

Page 37: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Even directions that look easy on the map can be tricky on the ground, especially at night. Emergency strobes on a headlamp are only visible with direct line of sight.

Chad loves to share route and climbing info he gathers from his trips, but his current devices aren’t very climbing friendly.

Chad might be seen if he’s hurt or stuck on the wall here.

But what if he broke hisankle down here?

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 34

Page 38: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Light transmits all of our visual communication. Laser light is especially bright, and could be used to give information instead of a power hogging LCD screen.

Laser light technology can be very compact, and is highly visible at night from great distances.

The laser light was easily visiblefrom over 300 yards away during testing.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 35

What kind of light technology could be useful?

Page 39: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

What other information would be useful?Being able to project SOS signals is nice, but I also wanted to make this device useful in more situations than that. How could this device replace a route book? How could it keep Chad from getting lost?

Know the height of anyobject just with 2 pointsand an angle.

Project help signalsvisible by planes, hikers, anyone.

Have route informationbefore you get started.

But projected directions to theclimbing route would be nice.

A screen may betoo much...

Have pre-loaded informationabout local water sources, or

ranger stations.

Orient your map and knowwhere you are at alltimes.

ERIC CALL DESIGN | 37

Figuring out the FormThe fi nal form needs to be simple to activate, durable, and compact enough so climbers like Chad won’t mind carrying it around.

Simple twist to each feature

Pull to activate

Twist to stand on its own

Twist to adjust angle Caribeaner inspiredattack to a belt or backpack strap

Page 41: Eric Call Design Portfolio 2013

Figuring out the InterfaceI explored how the necessary information could be displayed in a simple, graphical way, and how it is accessed through the physical interface.

What button layout is simple, but still contributes to the form?

What kind of symbol can communicate information clearly and quickly?
