Project Introduction:
The Site:
Site: 10 Baxter Street Nicholtown Greenville, SC
Michael Young, age 55, and his parents, age 84, share a space currently with michael providing care to his mobility challenged parents. Owning a secluded lot on baxter street in nicholtown, our studio was challenged to develop a $40,000 home which not only meets the young familys needs, but also provides a prototype for affordable design and construction.
The site is nearly 300 feet in length with a major flood plane located at the west end. Community is at the heart of nicholtown, and rather than avoiding this space, I want to create a more aquatic vegetation community garden at this location. To compliment and facilitate the use of this, an informal public gather space is created at the east end of the site and a physical connection is established and reinforced through the linear nature of the architecture.

THE PARAMETERSWITH A $40,000 BUDGET PROPOSED, CAREFUL THOUGHT INTO EACH SYSTEM AND DEATIL IS ESSENTIAL. MOBILITY CONCERNS AND THE THREE OCCUPANT PROGRAM REQUIRE LARGER SPACES IN ORDER TO ACCOMIDATE CICULAITON AND LIVING SPACE. Family is the at the core for the Young Family. As a result, the core of the house became the family shared space that features a multi purpose builtin piece of cabinetry. Each part of the core is designed to engage the spaces around directly or visually. Compacting the more utilitarian elements allowed for the dining space to enlarge and accommodate michael, his parents, and their five other children during holidays.

TRADITIONALLY A LOW INCOME AFRICAN AMERICAN NEIGHBORHOOD, NICHOLTOWN THRIVES WITH A VIBRANT AND COMMUNITY CENTERED CULTURE BASED STRONGLY IN ITS RESIDENTS AND THEIR FORMAL AND INFORMAL INTERATIONS. BAXTER STREET IS LOCATED ON THE WEST EDGE OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD ALONG THE REEDY RIVER AND THE SWAMP RABBIT TRAIL.
THE CLIENTMICHAEL YOUNG, AGE 55, AND HIS PARENTS, AGES 84, ARE THE PRIMARY CLIENTS FOR THE DESIGN. LIVING A CAREGIVING SITUATION FOR HIS MOBILITY CHALLENGED PARENTS, MICHAEL MUST BE AN ACTIVE PART OF THE HOUSE, YET ALSO HAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SECLUSION. FAMILY AND GATHERINGS ARE OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE FOR THE YOUNG FAMILY, AS ANUALLY THEY HOST MICHAEL'S FIVE SIBLINGS FOR HOLIDAYS.

Construction Concept and Design Implementation:With the steep grade change and mobility concerns in mind, it was clear that the house needed to operate for the parents on a single level. To affordably accommodate this, a steel frame was employed to raise the house up to finish floor rather than cut into the site to avoid associated costs.The building floats above the site providing cover at ground level and only engages the site in a traditional cmu footing at the entrance to reinforce that as the primary public space and to ground the structure. The roof form is able to take on a myriad of shapes due to the flexibility of steel. The triangulation of the roof forms in order to allows changing of heights to accent key programmatic and site conditions. The roof folds to accent the two key program elements, the front door and the family porch and folds at key natural lighting points, the southwest and northeast corner. With structure being addressed by the steel members, the wall construction can be lightweight to save on materials and costs, and to reduce the steel to a minimum. An inexpensive panelized rain screen system was designed to be easy to construct, but also to utilize the waste from the floor joists as blocking. Overall, this system reduces the structure to the bare minimum to meet the architectural desire, and the programmatic needs of the client. The flexible nature of each system allows for application into multiple sites with similar bounding parameters.

Steel Frame and Roof Program
The infill within the steel frame is able to be highly reduced in its own internal strucure due to the heavy lifting being performed by the frame. To reduce the required steel as much as possible, a light weight, inexpensive rain screen was employed utalizing joist waste from the subfloor as blocking material.
Utilization of steel framing is highly site and program dependant. With the steep terrain and complex program, simplification of the structure became cost effective versus a tra-ditional light wood frame on piers or masonry. The flexibility of steel allows for application in similar site conditions, providing a lower cost alternative with fewer material restrictions on the design.

Project Introduction:
The Site:
Nicholtown is a historical neighborhood located near downtown Greenville, South Carolina. With a rich African American history, the community thrives and the culture of the neighborhood remains strong despite harder economic times. As part of a revitalization effort, we were challenged to develop an urban strategy which would best provide invigoration of the communitys sustainable growth. This particular strategy was to focus on the ground plane.
The community garden located at the heart of the neighborhood adjacent to the community center and recreation fields, and provides assistance to needy families throughout the community. The garden however, is currently managed by a single person, Mr. Eddy Byrd. As a result, the opportunity to engage the residents to develop sustainable habits has been limited and unsuccessful. Sustaining Way, an organization dedicated to the development of sustainable lifestyle recently completed a project in Nicholtown to begin this educational program that our project seeks to supplement and expand. Our primary focus was to develop the site through three lens, Social, Economical, and Environmental.
