By Mr. Bales
Objective
• By the end of this lesson, you will be able to find equivalent fractions.
• Standard 4NS1.5 - Students will…explain equivalence of fractions.
Warm-Up
• Using the grid paper on your desk, please cut the paper in half and write the fraction that each represents.
• What is the fraction for each part?• Now, cut one of those pieces in half again.• What is the fraction for each part for these
pieces?• How many fourths equal one half?• Now, cut each of the fourths in half.• What is the fraction for these?• How many eighths equal a half?
Introduce
• Ryan H. has 8 fish in an aquarium. Four fish are green. So, Ryan says that 4/8 of the fish are green. Could Ryan use another fraction to represent 4/8?
Equivalent Fractions
• The fractions models to the left show that 4/8 is the same as 1/2.
• Fractions that name the same number are equivalent fractions.

Mrs. Benson!!
Find Equivalent Fractions
• One Way: Multiply• 4 x 2 = 8 8 x 2 16
• Multiply the numerator
and the denominatorby the same
number, 2.
• Another Way: Divide• 4 ÷ 2 = 2 8 ÷ 2 = 4
• Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number, 2.
•Find three fractions that are equivalent to 4/8.•To find equivalent fractions, you can use multiplication or division.
So, 8/16, 2/4, or 1/2 could be used to represent 4/8.
