Since the announcement in 2006 that Alltech would become the first-ever title sponsor of the next World Equestrian Games, we have become known for promotion of top-tier equestrian sports. That has occurred not only here

in Lexington, but also abroad, with our title sponsorship of the Alltech European Championships in 2009 and our ongoing support of the Royal Windsor Horse Show and Olympia, the London International Horse Show. There we met Her Majesty the Queen of England, the greatest monarch of this century. We traveled to Ireland with Muhammad Ali, the greatest fighter of all time. We found ourselves amidst icons and environs that a few years ago were beyond anything we could have imagined. We have been, and still are, on an incredible high. And now, as we celebrate the 100-day countdown to the Alltech Games, we invite you to join us as the next pinnacle approaches: the Alltech Fortnight Festival. Over two weeks of world-class entertainment awaits the world in Lexington this September. From the Vienna Philharmonic to Wynona Judd, we will fill the Bluegrass with all manner of song. Perhaps you are wondering what music has to do with an equestrian event. The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games is not merely a sporting competition; it is an international celebration. In honor of the world coming to our community, we will host an extended festival, a 16-day “party,” if you will – and what party do you know that does not have music? From our beer garden and other pavilions on the showgrounds at the Kentucky Horse Park to opera houses and nontraditional entertainment venues stretching across the state, Kentucky will be filled with music. It is only fitting. Music and horses have long gone hand-in-hand. Attendees at the Alltech Games will observe the elegance of the grand prix musical freestyle competition, in which the world’s finest dressage horses seem to “dance” as they perform to musical compositions. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies, produced by Dr. Everett McCorvey (the Lexington Opera Society Endowed Chair in Opera Studies at the University of Kentucky), will offer an emotional, transforming experience.

HAITIANHARMONY

Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Vienna

Philharmonic Orchestra

Eric Brown, past winner of the Alltech Vocal Competition

Alltech and the University of Kentucky present Haitian Harmony. As part of Alltech’s project to build a sustainable village in Haiti, a part of which is a school, we have established a program to develop musical skills and to preserve the musical history of Haiti.

Led by 2006 winner of the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition, Eric Brown, these children sing together songs in the local languages of French and Creole. They will grace us with their presence in the opening ceremonies at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games®.

Alltech’s Haitian Harmony will join Gustavo Dudamel, former musical director of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Young Artists and the 2008 “Q Prize” from Harvard University for extraordinary service to children. Come see them make music together.

“Pearse Lyons dreams big,” says Debra Hoskins. “He has played one of the most important roles in Kentucky’s history.”

Case in point: The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel will perform at the Norton Center for the Arts at Centre College in Danville this September as part of the Alltech Fortnight Festival.

Hoskins, Director of Programs and Public Relations for the Norton Center, remembers meeting Alltech’s President and Founder two years ago. At that time, the Alltech Fortnight Festival was coming to life in Lyons’ imagination. Now it has materialized and in a typically huge Lyons way.

While Hoskins has booked some of the biggest names in entertainment, none have been as big as the one Alltech will sponsor in September. “Dr. Lyons doesn’t do anything that’s short of extraordinary,”

she says. “When he does something, he always goes above and beyond.”

When they met in 2008, discussions were being held regarding a music festival to complement the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The Alltech Fortnight Festival was created to present concerts around the state and in Lexington while visitors were in town for the Alltech Games. Lyons' dream was to have the biggest and most recognized names in the music world.

And indeed he has.

Widely regarded as the premiere orchestra in existence, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the Norton Center for the Arts on September 27. Other than in Danville, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform only in New York City at Carnegie Hall during its visit to America. Tickets for the New York performances have been sold out for many months.

Seven music trade magazines recently named the “VPO,” as it has been nicknamed, the most important orchestra in the world. Its popularity is so great that the waiting period to purchase a subscription for its weekday concerts in Vienna is currently six years. The waiting period for a weekend subscription is 13 years.

In the Danville performance, Gustavo Dudamel, the 29-year-old Venezuelan prodigy, will conduct a program of Dvorak’s New World Symphony No. 9 (originally commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, which performed at Centre last spring), as well as Leonard Bernstein and Ravel.

Music critics have written that not since Bernstein has a conductor caused such excitement around the world as has Dudamel. Last year, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He currently serves as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony in Sweden, and artistic director of the Orquestra Sinfonica Simon Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela.

Her Royal Highness Princess Haya of Jordan, wife of Sheik Muhammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, has accepted an invitation to the performance and a black-tie dinner preceding the concert. Princess Haya is also President of FEI, the international equestrian federation. Sodexho, the French company that handles food service at the college, will fly chefs in from Paris for the dinner.

Since it opened in 1973, the Norton Center for the Arts has brought more than 700 performances of world-class music, theatre, opera and dance to Danville, including the world’s major orchestras: the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Moscow Philharmonic and the Orchestra de Paris.

In addition to Alltech as sponsor, partners for the Vienna Philharmonic performance include Ephraim McDowell Health, NBC, Sodexho, College Cable, DecoArt, Inc., Frank Taylor of Taylor Made Farms, and R. R. Donnelley.

The VPO performance will be broadcast live on LEX-18 (NBC Lexington). A program will also be produced for later viewing that will combine footage from the VPO concert with the equestrian events during the Alltech Games.

EQUINE INTERNATIONAL 13

Q: What is the Alltech Fortnight Festival?

A: The Alltech Fortnight Festival (“AFF”) began in July 2008 as a statewide, entertainment-centered countdown in Kentucky to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. It will culminate with a “fortnight” of live music throughout the Alltech Games at various Kentucky venues. By partnering with Kentucky venues and performing arts centers, the AFF’s philanthropic initiatives help bring arts to the entire state of Kentucky, while also using music to involve the Commonwealth’s communities in the excitement that is the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Q: When is the 2010 Alltech Fortnight Festival?

A: September 25-October 10, 2010 (concurrent with the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games - in the evenings).

Q: Where is the Festival located?

A: The Alltech Fortnight Festival takes place at various venues across the state of Kentucky over the 16-day period of the Alltech Games. The AFF is more of a concert series than a traditional music festival, with connections to more than 22 Kentucky venues.

Q: Why is Alltech, an animal health and nutrition company, producing an entertainment festival?

A: The Alltech Fortnight Festival was created by Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech, as a means of building excitement throughout the state for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games while investing in the development of the arts in local communities.

Q: What is Alltech’s actual involvement in the Alltech Fortnight Festival?

A: Alltech created the Alltech Fortnight Festival after connecting with and partnering with many Kentucky venues and performing arts centers. Alltech financially underwrites, produces and presents entertainment events in conjunction with these venues, while assisting in marketing and promotion.

Q: Does Alltech profit from the concerts?

A: The mutual goal between the venue of the event and Alltech is to break even. If the show happens to make money, the profits are then split between Alltech and that venue. Any money that Alltech receives goes back into producing future events.

Q: Can I receive Alltech Fortnight Festival updates and concert announcements?

A: Yes. Sign up online at www.AlltechFortnightFestival.com, and we'll send you updates and concert announcements via e-mail.

Q: How are the events selected?

A: Most concerts are selected based on the size of the venue and the surrounding community. We are trying to correlate and meet the wants and needs of the nearby population. We want these events to be unique as well as successful. There will be something for everyone!

Q: What are some of the shows that the Alltech Fortnight Festival has presented?

A: From July 2008 – October 2009, Alltech Fortnight Festival presented 45 events. Some of these included: Alan Jackson with Lee Ann Womack, The Grascals, Wynton Marsalis, Beach Boys, Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa, Clint Black, Manhattan Transfer, Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, Celtic Woman, Mark Morris Dance Group, The Doobie Brothers, The Decemberists, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Love & Theft, The Punch Brothers, .38 Special, Kansas and Ricky Skaggs.

Q: Will there be an annual Alltech Fortnight Festival that continues after the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games leave Kentucky in 2010?

A: While it has not been fully determined yet, it is quite possible. One of the initial hopes of this venture was to create a legacy event that would continue on after the Alltech Games.

Motown legends – The Temptations – will bring “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” to Frankfort’s Grand Theatre for special Alltech Fortnight Festival™ performances on Sept. 25 and 26 during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

One of the most successful acts to record for Motown, The Temptations have celebrated a five-decade career with four Billboard Hot 100 number one singles, 14 Billboard R&B number one singles, and three Grammy Awards. Three of their classics – “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and “Papa was a Rollin’ Stone”— are listed among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The group was a part of several firsts for the industry – the first all-male group for Motown; the first black television special in history on NBC with the

Supremes; and the first Grammy Award for Motown.

The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early ‘60s. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the members into stars.

An avalanche of hits followed, many of which, including “I Wish It Would Rain,” attained immortality. Since then, The Temptations have continued to prosper, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the world.

“The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” said a recent industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater.”

Co-founder and original member Otis Williams remains part of the group, and they are still topping the charts. In 1998, “Phoenix Rising,” an album with all new material, went platinum, and their single “Stay” topped Billboard charts for 3 months. “EarResistable” earned them another Grammy in 2000 for the Best Traditional R&B Recording.

“It’s a perfect pairing – one of Motown’s greatest, a group that has endured the test of time, and a historic theatre that has been renewed and restored to grandeur,” said Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech.

The Temptations are part of the continuing revitalization of Frankfort’s Grand Theatre. The intimate, high quality visual and performing arts center with seating for 428 provides arts, music and film to local residents and visitors.

When you hear a classic Charlie Daniels Band performance like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” you hear music that knows no clear genre. Is it a folk tale? A Southern boogie? A country fiddle tune? An electric rock anthem? The answer is “yes” to all of that and more. His resume includes recording sessions with artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Flatt & Scruggs, Pete Seeger, Mark O’Connor, Leonard Cohen and Ringo Starr. His songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley and Tammy Wynette.

Daniels is partly Western and partly Southern. His signature “bullrider” hat and belt buckle, his lifestyle on the Twin Pines Ranch, his love of horses, cowboy lore and the heroes of championship rodeo, Western movies and Louis L’Amour novels, identify him as a Westerner. The son of a lumberjack and a Southerner by birth, his music (rock, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel) is quintessentially Southern. In fact, even his bent for all things

Western is Southern, because his attire, lifestyle and interests are historically emblematic of Southern working-class solidarity with the “lone cowboy” individualism of the American West.

Like so many great American success stories, The Charlie Daniels saga began in rural obscurity. Born in 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was raised on a musical diet that included

Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, and the rhythm & blues and country music emanating respectively from Nashville’s 50,000-watt megabroadcasters WLAC and WSM. He graduated from high school in 1955 and soon enlisted in the rock ‘n’ roll revolution ignited by Mississippian Elvis Presley. Already skilled on guitar, fiddle and mandolin, Daniels formed a rock ‘n’ roll band and hit the road.

In 1969, Daniels moved to Tennessee to find work as a session guitarist in Nashville. Among his more notable sessions were the Bob Dylan albums of 1969-70 Nashville Skyline, New Morning, and Self Portrait. Daniels produced the Youngbloods albums of 1969-70 Elephant Mountain and Ride the Wind, toured Europe with Leonard Cohen and performed on records with artists as different as Al Kooper and Marty Robbins.

Epic Records signed him to its rock roster in New York in 1976. The contract, reportedly worth $3 million, was the largest ever given to a Nashville act up to that time. In the summer of 1979, Daniels delivered “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which went Platinum and won a Grammy Award.

Daniels performs in Lexington on October 8 during the Alltech Fortnight Festival.

“Few individuals have symbolized the South in popular culture as directly and indelibly as Charlie Daniels.”

- Encyclopedia of Southern Culture

The Alltech Fortnight Festival is going to be a 16-day swingin’ celebration! On Thursday, September 30 at 8 p.m., Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will take the stage with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra at the Singletary Center in Lexington. A Tribute to Cab Calloway will feature some of the greatest hits of the swing era – “Minnie the Moocher,” “Tarzan of Harlem,” and “Calloway Boogie.”

Tickets to this special event range from $30 to $75 and will be available for purchase beginning June 24 by calling (888) 494-4226 or (859) 233-4226 or visiting www.lexphil.org.

A nine-piece contemporary swing band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy gained mainstream popularity when “Go Daddy-O” was used in the movie “Swingers.” The group’s first major record with Capitol Records sold three million copies, and its most notable singles include “Go Daddy-O,” “You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight,” and “Mr. Pinstripe Suit.” Previous entertainment engagements include the 1999 Super Bowl Halftime Show, the 2006 Capitol One Bowl, and the Espy Awards. Always sporting their zoot suits, they perform more than 100 concerts around the world each year.

The Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra began in 1961 as the Central Kentucky Philharmonic Orchestra, a group of 65 volunteer musicians who performed three subscription concerts in their first year. The orchestra was

composed primarily of music faculty from the University of Kentucky, Morehead State University, Eastern Kentucky University, and Fayette County Public Schools, as well as graduates of the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra. The orchestra soon adopted the name Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra and quickly became the region’s preeminent symphony orchestra.

This fall the Lexington Philharmonic enters its 50th season. The orchestra now presents more than 150 concerts and educational programs annually.

He’s not a singer, but audiences have been singing the praises of actor John Lithgow for his solo stage performance in Stories by Heart. The widely acclaimed tribute to his parents and grandmother will be part of the Alltech Fortnight Festival.

His only prop: his treasured family-owned book of tales.

Stories by Heart portrays the familial march of time in a most personal way. It venerates those who have passed on by bringing their customs to life, such as the stories told by memory by Lithgow’s grandmother, Ida.

Born in 1882, she could flawlessly recite for more than a half-hour.

When her son, Arthur (Lithgow’s father) — an actor, director and producer — reached his mid-80s, he underwent a serious operation that appeared to sap his will to live. Lithgow’s three siblings were employed. Since he was not, he moved in with his parents in Massachusetts to take care of them. The heart of the tale is how Lithgow found his father’s lost enthusiasm for life and returned it to him.

Lithgow is probably most widely known for his starring role as Dick Solomon in the television sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series" in each of the program's six seasons and won three times. Lithgow

received a Primetime Emmy Award in the category "Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series" for his appearance in an episode of the Amazing Stories anthology show.

In a special collaboration during the Alltech Fortnight Festival, Marvin Hamlisch will conduct a pops concert with the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra.

Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility as well as substance. As a composer, he has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards; his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize.

He is the composer of more than 40 motion picture scores, including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for: Sophie’s

Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, Save the Tiger and his latest effort, The Informant, starring Matt Damon and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Hamlisch was Musical Director and arranger of Barbra Streisand’s 1994 concert tour of the U.S. and England, as well as of the television special, Barbra Streisand: The Concert (for which he received two of his Emmys).

A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and Queens College, Hamlisch believes in the power of music.

“Music can make a difference,” he said. “There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together. Music is truly an international language, and I hope to contribute by widening communication as much as I can.”
