WLM and Container Pricing - Part 2
In the last years WLM has been more and more involved in the manymechanism invented by IBM marketing people to provide ways tomitigate the z/OS environment software costs. They started with the specialty engines (zAAP and zIIP) where WLMwas marginally involved. The next steps were the 4-hour rolling average mechanism and thesoft capping technique implementation where WLM started playing afundamental role in major software (e.g. z/OS, CICS, IMS, and Db2)cost control. In 2014, IBM introduced Mobile Workload Pricing: a new pricingmodel designed “to mitigate the impact of mobile workloads on sub-capacity license charges and provide a more cost-competitivesoftware”. The initial implementation was too complex for the customers tomanage so it was not very successful. After a couple of years, IBMprovided a much easier implementation of this pricing optioninvolving WLM. At the end of 2017, IBM announced Container Pricing. “Container Pricing makes pricing simpler and more economical forqualified solutions. It's a framework for hosting simplified andflexible software pricing for qualified solutions running on the z13
and z14 IBM processors, and allows specific workloads to bemetered, reported on, and optionally capped, whether on adedicated LPAR or colocated with existing workloads on an existingLPAR with no direct impact on your 4 Hour Rolling Average.” The last part of the above sentence is the real innovation. WithContainer Pricing you may run qualified solutions, inside a logicalcontainer in the same LPAR where traditional workload run, and havea separate, lower price for the workload inside the container, withoutany direct impact on traditional workload pricing. The burden of managing co-located qualified solutions is againcharged to WLM. Unfortunately, the technical implementation in WLM is, in this case, more complex and invasive. In this paper, after a short description of the Container Pricingoptions, we will focus on the new WLM definitions required tomanage and measure co-located workloads and on some issues thatcustomers should be aware of. Finally, we will discuss the most relevant new metrics available andsome examples of the modifications to the existing reports that willbe needed. TECH NOTES
EPV for MQ V14 entered MA
EPV for MQ v14 is now in Managed Availability so it can be installedunder EPV Technologies control. It includes: • z14 support EPV for MQ fully supports z14 machines. New MIPS tables areprovided including benchmarks for all the available models. MIPS tables for zIIP have also been added to allow users to easily setthe appropriate zIIP capacity for their configuration. • MQ V8 and V9 full support New metrics have been added to support new MQ performancemeasurements, such as: > Additional SMF metrics for logging analysis, > Pageset statistics, > Channel Initiator statistics, > Channel Initiator accounting • Usability enhancements All the standard enhancements introduced in EPV V14 products; themost relevant of them is the availability of the conditional formattingfunction. • 40 new views If you want to install EPV for MQ V14 please write to [email protected]
