There’s been some criticism of manufacturers just recently, arguing that many ‘normal’ size ink cartridges are actually half-empty and that this practice is just a wayof getting people to pay extra for ‘XL’ cartridges that simply include the missing ink that should have been there in the first place. Now, just to complicate matters, Canonhas released its new MX925 , which boasts not just XL but XXL cartridges too.

The MX925 provides an impressive and versatile range of features for a printer costing just £179.00. It’s one of the bulkier printers we’ve seen from Canon, measuring arather imposing 491mm wide, 396mm deep and 231mm high, so you’ll need a fair amount of space for it in your office.

It should earn its keep, though, as it includes a 9600x2400dpi printer, 4800x2400dpi scanner and copier, along with a fax machine and 35-page two-sided documentfeeder. The main paper tray holds a healthy 250-sheets of A4 paper, and provides automatic two-sided (duplex) printing. There’s also a second tray that can hold 20 sheetsof photo paper, and it can print onto CDs and DVD disks too.

As well as a standard USB port, the MX925 includes both Ethernet and wifi for connecting to your home or office , and it also supports AirPrint for iOS devices.And while it’s not the fastest printer around, it still performs well for a model in this price range.

The MX925 is a good all-round office printer.

Canon claims speeds of 15 pages per minute for mono printing, and 10ppm for colour. We actually got around 12ppm for mono and 7ppm for colour, but that should stillbe perfectly adequate for most home users and small businesses.

Print quality is very good. Canon uses a special pigmented ink for mono printing, and this produces very crisp, smooth text output. A second black ink cartridge is used forcolour printing, along with the conventional cyan, magenta, and yellow inks, which produce bright, colourful graphics and photos. It’s not a specialist photo-printer but theMX925 can certainly handle the occasional post card or glossy brochure.

That XXL cartridge size is only available for the pigmented black ink that is used for text documents, and can print up to 1000 pages. The online price for that cartridge isaround £22.00, which works out at about 2.2p per page – a reasonable price, but hardly outstanding, so perhaps there’s some truth in the criticism that XL and XXLcartridges are just a marketing ploy.

Colour printing isn’t bad, though. A set of XL colour cartridges costs about £40 and should produce around 700 pages. That comes to just under 6p per page, which isquite good for an inkjet printer.

OUR VERDICT

The sheer bulk of the MX925 might be a problem for smaller offices, but it certainly provides good value for money. It performs well for a printer in this price range andprovides a wide range of useful features that will appeal to both home users and small businesses on a tight budget.

It has a solid feature set, passable speed, and its output quality is adequate, unless you need professional-looking graphics.

Most of the Business Smart series models can print at tabloid size only through a manual-feed slot, while the MFC-J4710DW andMFC-J6920DW come with two paper trays, at least one of which holds tabloid-size paper. The MFC-J5620DW combines a little ofeach method.

In addition to its 250-sheet main tray, the MFC-J5620DW adds a multipurpose feederthat can take up to 80 sheets of letter-size or five sheets of 11-by-17-inch paper, aswell as specialty media. Letter-size paper is loaded into the printer in landscapeorientation, which keeps the printer's size down. It measures just 9.4 by 19.3 by 13.5inches (HWD), compact for a printer that can print at up to tabloid size, and weighs25.5 pounds.

One thing to note is that when you load the tray with tabloid-size paper, the trayextends 9 inches out of the front of the printer, and the paper is exposed. You maynot want to keep the tray loaded with tabloid paper when you don't need to, and youcan use the feeder for tabloid printing when you don't have a big job.

The MFC-J5620DW connects to a PC via a USB cable, or to a network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It also supports Wi-Fi Direct, which allowsfor direct printing between compatible devices without the need to go through an access point. It's compatible with Apple AirPrint,Brother iPrint&Scan, Google Cloud Print, and Cortado WorkPlace for printing from mobile devices. Through Brother Web Connect,it can connect to popular services such as Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and Evernote. I tested the printer over anEthernet connection, with the drivers installed on a computer running Windows Vista.

Print SpeedI timed the MFC-J5620DW at 3.8 pages per minute (ppm) on our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic's hardwareand software), an acceptable speed if a bit slow compared with similar models. It lagged behind the Brother MFC-J6920DW(5.5ppm), the Brother MFC-J4610DW (5.6ppm), and the Brother MFC-J4710DW (5.7ppm).

Output QualityOverall output quality for the MFC-J4620DW is a touch below par. Text quality is average, good enough for business uses other thanones that require small fonts.

Graphics quality is below what we expect in this category. Many illustrations showed banding, a regular pattern of striations. Mostbackgrounds looked somewhat faded. Thin colored lines did not show up well, and in some cases were lost entirely. The graphicsare adequate for most internal business use, but fall short of what I would use for formal reports or PowerPoint handouts.

Photo quality is average for an inkjet, with prints being more or less at drugstore quality. Two monochrome images showed sometinting, but that won't be an issue unless you print in black and white (or for photos with dark backgrounds).

This model is a good, cost-effective choice for someone who often prints at tabloid size, with occasional big jobs. Its 250-sheetpaper tray, plus the feeder that can hold 80 sheets of letter-size paper or five sheets of tabloid-size paper, falls short of thecomparably priced Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J4610DW, which has a 400-sheet total capacity. However, that model's trays arelimited to letter size. Its tabloid printing is through a manual feed slot for feeding tabloid-size paper a sheet at a time. The BrotherMFC-J4610DW was notably faster than the MFC-J5620DW in our testing. Which of the two you choose depends on what's moreimportant: speed and greater capacity on the one hand, and the ability to handle larger tabloid-size printing jobs on the others.

The MFC-J5620DW lacks the speed, paper capacity, and duplex scanning ability of the Brother MFC-J6920DW, the Editors' Choice forheavier-duty printing (including at tabloid size) for a micro or small office, which can fit up to 500 sheets of tabloid-size paper in itstwo trays. You pay a premium for those extra features, and they may be more than you need.

For a little more money than you'd pay for the MFC-J5620DW, the Brother MFC-J4710DW offers a 400-sheet paper capacity, splitbetween a 250-sheet tray for paper up to tabloid size and a 150-sheet letter-sized tray. This gives you additional paper capacity andthe convenience of being able to print larger jobs at tabloid size while still having a dedicated tray full of letter-size paper. TheBrother MFC-J4710DW was considerably faster than the MFC-J5620DW in our testing, and it also supports duplex (two-sided)scanning. If you can use those features, it is well worth the extra money, and worthy of its Editors' Choice as a small- or micro-office inkjet for tabloid printing. But with the Brother MFC-J5620DW, you can save some cash and get a capable MFP with a goodfeature set that can print large jobs on 11-by-17-inch paper.
