Patient Counseling Event ReportAssociation :Egyptian Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (EPSF)

Event’s Background :Patient Counseling Event is one of the mainprojects of the Pharmacy ProfessionDevelopment Committee in EPSF as takenfrom IPSF.

Patient Counseling Event is utilized to providethe pharmaceutical students with the scientificdata they may need to provide the counselingfor patients and also the skills they will need todeliver this scientific data including the presentation skills , negotiation skills , bodylanguage control and other skills . The event was added to the committee ‘s plan in the General Assembly held inAugust 2008 in Tanta .

The event has been decided to be made in the form of a seminar for providingfundamental data followed by an evaluation output through a competition .

Event flow in EPSF : The PCE Coordinator received a list contact details of the presidents of thelocal scientific associations .

The PCE coordinator contacted them and got the contact details of the PCEmanager in each association whether he / she is the president or the PPDExecutive or a coordinator .

Data for the booklet has been chosen depending mainly on the publicationsof the IPSF Publication and PPD Committee then The Poster has beendesigned and the fliers too

We contacted Dr. Yehia Zakaria (Area Manager of El Ezaby Chain Pharmacies) tobe the speaker in the event and arranged a schedule for his available datesto hold the event.

We contacted El Ezaby Chain Pharmacies and they accepted to be thesponsor of the event to provide fund for the event materials.

Each Association was asked to provide a schedule of the dates available for holding the event in their universities.

Data obtained from the universities has been organized in a tabulated form .

The PCE Coordinator kept up with each local PCE representative to providehim / her with the needed information about the procedure, requirements for holding the event.

After holding the event in each university, each representative presented areport including (Number of attendants – Day Scenario – Problems –Suggestions).

The Event was held in 7 Universities.1. Russian University

2. Ain Shams University3. EL Azhar (Male) University4. El Azhar (Female) University5. Bany Suef 6. El Mansoura7. El Zagazaig University

They also hosted students from other universities

1. Cairo University2. Canadian University3. German University

4. Tanta University

Then the final competition parameters has been assigned (Place – Date –Competition procedure ) as It was decided to be made in the meetings hallin Dar El Madfaiaa Hotel on 10

thof April 2009 ) And the winners were

certified and rewarded

The event Flow in Universities :

A Publication for one week before the event andoffering the students to register for the competitionto have a general idea about the number of competitors in the competition to manage thetiming in the event .

A Seminar including information about howcounseling session should be, instructions givento the patient, how to monitor therapy, verbal and

non verbal communication, how to createempathy with the patient, and others.






A Competition between the registered studentsthat include a quiz about general counselingand soft skills knowledge, was given at thebeginning of the session, to find out who isqualified and to reduce the number of participants in the role play step .

The Role Play which is in the form of a simpleact in which one of the organizers is assignedto act as a patient and the competitors try toutilize their skills to make a perfect patientcounseling process (N.B. the place of the roleplay should be in the form of a Desk and thecompetitor puts a lab coat on as in the

pharmacy to make the act as real as possible) .

Participants in the role play step are beenevaluated according to the judgment of anexpert as an experienced pharmacy manager based on how they responded to the patientand how far they have applied what they havelearnt during the session using an evaluationsheet (Attached one)that categorize the skills

with a scale from 1 to 10 for each skills .






Then statistics are been made and the finalist is chosen then the names andcontact details of the finalists are sent in the final report presented to thenational event coordinator.

Final Statistics: The event has been attended by over 3000 Pharmaceutical Student fromthe 11 universities listed above.

Event duration: 2Weeks for Preparation of the event on the national levelplus 27 Days for holding the event in universities plus a day for the final

competition starting from 1 March 2009 and ended on 10 April 2009. Total number of students registered for the competition was over 100Students .and the total number of winners in all universities reached 21Students .and there were 3 students who won in the Final Competitionwhose details will be provided in case of a regional competition .
