How Do GMD Harmonics Threaten Grid Security?

Harmonics can take out critical grid facilities:– False tripping due to distortion– Correct tripping to protect from distortion– Possible damage and failure of grid

equipment

Reactive power sources are particularly vulnerable

Loss of facilities can allow the grid to collapse at a less severe GMD intensity than predicted using intact grid

Harmonic analysis is an essential and integral part of grid GMD impact assessment

GMD Planning Software Benchmarking– Benchmarking the GIC

EPRI is working with DOE to help develop the pilot program plan to protect transformers in the field as directed in Executive Order 13744.

EPRI is providing the following:

– Hardware specifications (for monitoring and equipment) (Completed)
