Tom:Yeah,that'ssotruewhatyouindicated,youknow.Thegoodnewsisthatourwater,citywater,municipalwateristreated.Youknow,we'vehadadddisinfectantstothewater,primarilychlorineandchloraminesasyoumentioned.Youknow,severalhundredyearsago,tensofthousandsofpeoplediebecauseof,youknow,waterborneillnesses.Andthat'snotthecasefortunatelyforus,especiallyindevelopedcountrieswherewehaveaccesstothis,youknow,treatedwater.Thedownsideofthatisthat,youknow,thesedisinfectantsalsoproduce,whatwecallitdisinfectedbyproducts,youknow,thatareknowncarcinogensunfortunately.Sothere's,youknow,wehavetotakethegoodwiththebadhereandourwater,it'streated,it'ssafetodrinknowfromabiologicalstandpoint.Butsomanyotherchemicalsenterourwaters,asyouindicated,groundwater,surfacewater,youknow,eventreatedsewerwater.Wehavetreatmentplantsthattakeoursewerwaterandtrytocleanitup.Butunfortunatelythatwater'sputbackintotheenvironmentandeventuallycan,youknow,workitswayintogroundwater,surfacewaterandthenbackintothewaterwedrink.That'swhyit'ssoimportanttofilterandpossiblypurifyourwaterbeforewedrinkit.

Katie:Thatmakessense.Sojusttoclarify,therecanbe,I'msurelotsofdifferentthingsthatareinourwater,butwhatyou'resayingisthere'sadifferencebetween,like,waterthat'sactually,like,notsafe,thatit'sgotbacteriainitorsomethingthatwouldactuallymakeyoureallysickimmediatelyversusjustthesebyproductsofdisinfectionthatcould,Iknowsomepeoplethinkcouldcauseproblemslongtermandtheystillmaywanna

getthatoutoftheirwater,butit'snotlikeapathogenthat'sgonnamakeyouillimmediately.Isthatkindofthedistinction?

Tom:Exactlyright.Youknow,waterthat'sprovidedbycitiesandtownshasbeendisinfectedwithchlorineandchloraminesandsomeotheroxidizersoccasionally.Andthatwateriswhatwewouldcall,youknow,biologicallysafe.Thepathogenshavebeenkilled.Thewaterissafetodrinkinthatway.Butunfortunatelyduringthistreatmentprocess,otherchemicalsareproduced,whatwecallthesedisinfectantbyproducts,trihalomethanes,haloaceticacids.Unfortunately,thereareactuallyhundredsofthemthatareproducedinourwater.Andalongwiththat,there'sheavymetalsthatalsoareinthisclassofVOCsthatyoumentioned,youknow,thingslikeherbicides,pesticides.Evenpharmaceuticalsanddrugs,they'reallfoundinourwatersystems.I'msureyou'venotedsomereportssaidupto2100differentchemicalshavebeenfoundinpublicwatersupplies.Soit'ssoimportantthatwedosomething,youknow,atourhometoremovethesechemicals,toeliminatethemsothatwe'renotdrinkinghighlevelsofthesepotentialcontaminants.

Katie:Yeah,IdefinitelyagreewithyouandIwannagodeeponacoupleofdifferenttypesofchemicalsandwhattheyare.Butfirst,Iwouldguessthatthere'salotofvariationindifferentmunicipalitiesupasfaraswhatisinthewater.Soforinstance,wherewelive,theydon'tactuallyputfluorideinthewater,butinalotofplacestheydo.AndI'veseeninsomewaterreportsdifferentlevelsofchlorineorchloramines.Soisthereawaythatpeoplecantellwhat'sintheiractualwaterandwhattheyneedtobeworriedabout?Istheretestingforthat?Aretherereportsonlineorhowcanweasconsumersknowwhatwe'reupagainst?

Tom:Sure.Soifyouwantamunicipalwater,citywaterprovidedbyyourcityortown,thegoodnewsisthatthere'sareportproducedeachyear.Awaterqualityreport,sometimescalledtheConsumerConfidenceReport,that'sgenerallyavailableonlineoryoucancallyourlocalwaterproviderandthey'llprovideyouacopyofthereport.Thatreport'srequiredbytheEPAandpublishedgenerallyaroundthe1stofJulyeachyear.AndasIsaid,thegoodnewsisthatthey'lllistthechemicalsdetectedinthewater,thingslikechlorine,chloramine,theyalwaysreportthosedisinfectantbyproductsandthelevels,certainheavymetals.That'sthegoodnews.ButunfortunatelytheEPAonlyrequirestestingfor87chemicalsandaswementionedearlier,therecanbehundredsofpotentialchemicalsinthewater.

Sothenextstepforahomeownerwouldbetoactuallyhavetheirwatertested.Therearemanywaystohaveyourwatertested.WeatRadiantLifedoofferwatertestingandwetestforupto107differentchemicalsandpropertiesofthewater,soyouknowexactlywhatthewaterlookslikecomingintoyourhome,becauseoftentimesthetreatmentplantcanbe,youknow,milesawayfromyourhome.Andeventhoughthisreportgivesyouanindicationofwhatthelevelsareandsomeofthecontaminantspresent,it'sreallygoodtoknowexactlywhat'sgoingonatyourhouse.Thenseparately,ifyou'reonwellwater,obviouslythat'snottreated.Ifyou'reonaprivatewell,again,highlyrecommendedthatyouhaveyourwellwatertestedannually.RadiantLifedoesofferwellwatertestingnow.Youcancheckwithyourlocalenvironmentaltestinglaboratorytomakesurethatyouwaterissafefordrinking.Andifindeedyourwellwaterhasvariouscontaminantspresent,thentherearesolutionsouttheretoaddressthem.

Katie:Sowhataresomeofthemostcommoncontaminantsthatpeoplewouldseeintheirwater,bothinacityenvironmentoronwellwater?Canyoukindofjustwalkusthrough,Iknowyousaidthere'shundreds,butcanyouwalkusthroughsomeofthemainoffendersthattendtoshowupalot?

Tom:Sure.Theonesmostcommonarechlorineandchloraminesifthey'reusedbyyourlocalmunicipality.Fluoride,asyoumentioned,sometimesthiscanbenaturallevelsoffluorideinyourwater,butasyouindicated,manycitiesandtownsareaddingfluorideintothewater.Soyouwannaknowwhatthatlevelis.Arsenic,cadmium,chromiumorotherchemicals,bariumoftenfoundinwater.AndthengeneralVOCsthatcanbethereareherbicides,pesticides.There'softentimes,inthereportyou'llseeunregulatedcontaminantsthatarebeingtested.TheEPArequeststhatmunicipalitiestestforcertainchemicalsthatareofconcern.Andyoumightseethosetherealso.Sothegoodnewsisthattherearemanysolutionstogetthesechemicalsoutofyourwater.Certainlychlorine,chloramines,heavymetals,fluoride,thatbigclassofVOCswejusttalkedabout,theyallcanbeaddressedthroughwaterfiltrationandpurificationsolutions.

Katie:GotIt.Sowhataboutbeyondthose?AndIwannadefinitelygettosolutionsinjustasecond,butinmyresearch,I'vebeendoingalotofresearchaboutplasticandtheendocrinedisruptingchemicalsthatcanbreakdownfromplasticandhowthey'venowfoundsomeofthetracesofthatevenintheAntarcticandplacesthatyouwouldbeshockedtorealizeit'salreadygottenthere.SoI'mcurious,doweseethat,isthereawaytoknowifthathasreachedourdrinkingwater?Andifso,whatcanwedoaboutthat?

Tom:Right.Again,unfortunatelyinmostwaterqualityreportsdon'treportthelevelsofthosechemicals.Soagain,itcomesbackto,youknow,havingahomeowner,havetheirwatertested.AndasIsaid,youknow,wedoofferthetestwithupto107differentchemicals.Soyouhaveagoodideaofwhatmightbethere.Theobviousconcernisthatwecan'ttestforhundredsandhundredsofthesechemicals.SoIknowwewannatalkaboutsolutionslateron,butthegoodnewsisthatsolutionsdoexistandwecanprovideourselveswiththatprotectiontogetthesecontaminantsoutofthewater.

Katie:Okay.Youmentionedherbicidesandpesticidesasapotential.Whataboutespeciallyinagriculturalareas,runofffrom,forinstance,glyphosate,becauseweusedtoliveinKentuckyinanagriculturalareaandIsawthemsprayeverywhere.ItwassomethingIwasconcernedaboutinthewater,especiallyafterapreviouspodcastguestkindofexplainedhowthatcaninourbodybasicallysterilizethegutandcauseallkindsofproblems.Soareweseeingglyphosatetracesinwater?Andifsolet'sstarttalkingaboutsolutions,ifso,arethereanywaysthatwecanfiltertoremovethat?

Tom:Yes,weare,asyouknow,it'sbeingdetectedmoreandmorethroughoutthecountry,especiallyinagriculturalareas.It'saverydangerouschemical.RegulationsonglyphosateinthewatersvariesthroughoutthecountryandvariesbetweentheUnitedStatesandevenEuropeancountries.Soit'sachemicalofveryconcern.Andasyouindicated,thegoodnewsisthatfilters,youknow,carbon-basedfilterscanremoveit.Certainlypurifiers,youknow,basedonreverseosmosiscanberemovedfromyourwateralso.Sothat'stheimportanceofhavingsometypeoffiltrationorpurificationsystem,youknow,atyourhomethroughthedrinkingwater.And,youknow,theresearchonthatparticularchemicalhasbeenongoing.Butrecently,asyouindicated,there'smoreandmoreconcernaboutthelevelsofglyphosateinourdrinkingwater.

Katie:Soyoumentionedfiltrationorpurification.Arethosedifferenttermsinthewaterindustry,likeawaterpurificationindustry.Dotheymeandifferentthings?

Tom:Yes,it'sgenerallyaccepted.There'ssomeexceptions,butingeneral,whenpeopletalkaboutfiltration,they'rereferringtotheuseofgranularactivatedcarbon.Themostwell-knownthatiscoconutshellcarbonthat'susedinmostfilters.Youknow,yourstandardwaterfilters,countertopfilters,refrigeratorfiltersandthey'reprimarilycoconutshellcarbon,atypeofgranularactivatedcarbonandthere'sothers,andit'sveryeffectiveatremovingchemicalsfromthewater.Whenwetalkaboutpurifiers,it'sgenerallyacceptedthatbothsystemscontainreverseosmosis.

AsIsaid,therearesomeexceptions,butthroughouttheindustry,filtersfocusontheuseofcarbon,purifiersusereverseosmosis,de-ionizationandthethirdwaytopurifyingisusingdistilledwater,butdistillersaregenerallynotaspracticalforresidentialuse.Therearesomeofthemarket,buttheytakelongertopurifythewatersothey'renotaswidespreadisasareverseosmosispurifier,forexample.

Soanexampleofthat,mydoctorhasmeavoidingfluorideatallcostsbecauseIhavethyroiddiseaseandfluoridecanfurthercomplicatethat.Soit'ssomethingIneedtomakesureit'snotinmywater.Andespeciallywhereweusedtolive,Ihadtobereallyproactiveaboutgettingitoutbecauseitwasputinthewater.Sostartwalkingusthrough,Iknowthishasbeenyourareaofexpertisefordecadesandthatyouhavesomuchexperiencehere.Socanyoukindofstartwithanoverviewofifahomeownernowknowswhat'sintheirwater,whataresomeofthewaystostartaddressingthatandcanthisbeaddressedatawholehouselevelorhowdowegetthesethingsoutofourwater?
