Can EO based techniques or applications discriminate organic fields from conventional ones?

One question

With follow-up questionsAn additional tool like chemical analyses of products?

A substantial part geared to automation of certain certification procedures?

Can we afford it? Alone or with other End Users?

EO Requirements

Automation of Imagery Treatment

Cost pressure (300€ - 600€ Farm Certification Costs)

Screening of Outliers (targeted unannounced inspections)

Selected Yields Estimation (loose inspector network)

Real Time Information System withReciprocal information flow from and to farmers such as:

- On line recording of management practices (documentary requirement, to improve the robustness)

- Pre-Harvest Yield and quality estimation (incentive service for farmers)

EO Requirements

Additional Reflectance KnowledgeEnlargement of Crop References

- Annual crops (other grains, legumes, oil seeds)

- Perennials (pastures, deciduous and evergreen orchards, vineyards)

Reflectance and Physiology- Nitrogen stress (presently)

- Physiological stress due to management practices (such as herbicides treatments)

Perspectives - Scenarii

Horizon 5 years applications related to yield estimation

• Monitoring the yield of organic fields on a real time basiso Climatic accident and/or miss management (certification)o Post harvest traceability of product flow (inspection, previous year)

• Part of the world with light network of local inspectors • Crops with high monetary value, price differential, large grade variations

Horizon 5-10 years with parcel-based monitoring

• Routine EO supervision to screen out “organic outliers”. • Service for the yearly routine inspection, or for directing unannounced

in situ verification

• Improvement of the risk assessment policy of certifiers, with a reduction of unannounced visits without reducing the efficiency of the certification (50% to 10%, productivity gain)

Perspectives - Scenarii

16ESRIN Consultation Meeting Sentinel2 25/04/2012

Horizon: 15 - 20 years: EO-based organic inspection and certification

• Routine satellite supervision coupled with other discriminating schemes, such as:

o metabolomic, o isotopic fingerprints for detailed geographical areas, etc.

• May be integrated in an online service with information provided by the farming operators themselves. The data may be processed in such a way a to reduce the inspection and certification time

• Change in legislation is required (up-date of definition, societal demand, rules of inspection and certification of organic farming)

Seed questions . . .

- What new research is needed in agricultural monitoring?Reflectance data for all crops being handled as a commodity in the food system Impact of herbicide treatment on the reflectance of plants, possibly for most pesticides application

- What new retrieval techniques need to be developed to exploit Sentinel-2 data????

- What development / demonstration activities are required in the agriculture sector?Analysis exploring the potential of Sentinel imagery to discriminate different crops and sub-types of crops (expert system for calibration)

- What new tools are needed?Monitoring systems allowing to discriminate different crops and sub-types of crops in order to improve the control of the food safety chain, or to support the implementation of agricultural policies

Page 19: EOrganic Discrimination Organic versus Conventional ESRIN Consultation Meeting Sentinel2 25/04/2012 1

19ESRIN Consultation Meeting Sentinel2 25/04/2012

- Are there requirements for High Level Products beyond Level-1C????

- Do you expect difficulties related to the large volume of Sentinel-2 data, Mitigation?Connection with metadata system is required to integrate the Sentienl 2 Data in order to develop expert system for specific questions (sustainability of agricultural systems, interaction climate change and sustainability

- What needs to be done to use Sentinel-2 in synergy with other satellite missions?Development of semi-automatic data fusion systems allowing to combine different datasets

- What opportunities arise in using Sentinel-2 with the existing long time series of high resolution data (Landsat, SPOT, etc)?

Provided that data fusion is feasible between Sentinel-2 data and other high resolution data, retrospective calibration of indicators discriminating different crop (sub)types might be realised

. . . Seed questions . . .

20ESRIN Consultation Meeting Sentinel2 25/04/2012

- What are the Benefits for agriculture of the improved revisiting capacity?5 days with 2 satellites is for out purpose already at the lowest frequency, taking into account cloudy conditions

- What are the Benefits for agriculture of the improved spectral information content (red edge)?

Monitoring and characterisation of physiological stress (not only nitrogen, but also moisture, chemical environment, cultivation management, application of agro environmental measures)

- Are you planning to use Sentinel-2 for local, regional or global agriculture applications?

For local precision, but at a world scale (where ever possible or allowed)

. . . Seed questions
