Wyndham City Gateway Project

The design process for the Wyndham Western Gateway Project embarks to install exciting and eye-catching architecture that inspires and enriches vibrant and dynamic municiplaity. It holds to represent community’s rich heritage and extensive natural ecology while promoting its growing diversity in cultural and social aspect

Brief and Aspiration

Striving to extend its identity of Wyndham city past local and rural scale, our team endeavours to create an revolutionary and place making design that brings in attention and create dis-course on a global scale. The installation would not only put Wyndham community on a world map but also endevours to create sense of pride and dignity while bringing in more cultural talent and dynamicsm to the community.

The site A is the largest land area of the three and pro-vides maximum opportunity to communicate with the motorist visually and experientially.

At 100km/h, a motorist takes about 30 seconds to pass the site which gives ample time to communicate mes-sages and create experience.

The angles and the directions at which the viewers ap-proach and passes the site altinate the different visual stimulation and experience which opens up a design possibilities for an work that communicate differently according to how the viewers approach the site.

CHOOSING DESIGN INTENTDESIGN BRIEF

Design Intent ...

From the brief, the work will be explored in finding a design solution that is iconic and place making piece of architecture that brings in the at-tention from the wider public past its rural communitiy.

Furthermore, it should strive to perform in more variety levels past its aesthetic looks but to communicate and inspire experience with the pub-lic that will express the diverse and rich Wyndham city community.

The revolutionary design will bring in the attention of the world while its performace as sign and experience will convey the desired message to the public.

Architecture and its function

ART..

History seems to show its em-phasis on the buildings’ aesthetic qualities than anything else. How-ever, with change in time comes changes in values, and soon, architecture, with its inescapable influence on people’s livelihood, faced new challeges. Increase in urbanisation caused scarcity in spaces and resources while increase in living standard increased services crammed in to a building.

Buildings were now designed to accomodate all those needs, and were judge on its on its perfor-maces including functionality, environmental-friendliness, com-munication of message(sign), its optimal satiscation of habitants needs(experience) etc

SIGN...

Archtiecture performs as a means of communication that triggers ideas and feelings to those who view it.

However, the level of communica-tion between its creator and the viewers vary according to the level of understandings, past experi-ence, social and cultural back-ground of viewers.Hence, it is difficult to give out exact message that the creator is trying to convey, unless it was made very clear for anyoen to feel the same way.

Experience...

Architecture, arguably, is one field of practice that is the most influ-ential towards its society.

It affects the movement of people, the social activies, the hub, the feelings and it represents social, cultural and even political messages of time.Hence, study of its society for its culture and social values is critical in designing architecture that truelly optimise the experience of its users and viewers.

In case of Wyndham city, study of cultural and social values of its Vic-torian people is crucial to perform at maximum for its uses.

Architecture of discourse

As a gateway, it needs to perform not only as a physical boundary but as a communication methode that introduces the Wyndham community to the public.Wyndham City community celebrates its rich social, cultural and historic elements that pro-motes and support diverse aspects of its habitants’ lives. In order to communicate these qualities and create experience so that it captures viewer’s at-tention even after the physical and visual contact, it needs to be iconic and place-making and most importantly create discourse that grabs attention from wider public

PRECEDENCESCASE FOR INNOVATION

ARCHITECTURE OF DISCOURSE

By employing current new materials and new design methode and theory, the Gateway project also can put the Wyndham City in to the world map.

Deborah Gans, The Le Corbusier Guide, (New York, Princeton Architectural Press 2006) 22

Villa Savoye Le Corbuseir 1928 - 1931

“Le Corbusier’s five points of architec-ture were so potent and concise that it would rival Laugier’s primitive hut as a constructive emblem of its era”

Using the new devised architectural language of five points of architecture and by taking the visitors through an experience of differenet spaces, Le Cor-busier has created a place making architecture that brought attention and discourse to a small rural town near Paris.

By creating a intimate experience with the visitor and viewers, discourse and attention can be achieved on and off the site.

Creating discourse leads recogni-tion of the community to a wider public realm. In order to commu-nicate, the Gateway Project needs to employ current leading-edge design techniques, like compu-tational design, and explore in to design possibilities that create experiences with its visitors.

DESIGN RESEARCH ...

“The work challenges the conventional way the archtitecture is viewed.” - John Wiley

The Gateway project requires element of longivity. However, I question, what is the use of long lasting signs that no-one recog-nise or appreciate? The main purpose of the Gate-way project is to communicate ideas of Wyndham community and it is important to grab atten-tion from wide public.

Just like how this example shows, the architecture of Gateway project can have striking effect while grab-bing attention and creating discourse.

This creates sense of changing dynamicity of the Wyndham community while creating international discourse.

Blur Building Diller Scofidio and Renfro Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland 2002

The precedence challenges the conven-tional way the architecture is viewed, created and experienced. With notion of timely decay and anti-spectical, the work has created huge international discourse and attention.

The cloud itself adds in the identity of the Swiss alps, where lots of mist and fog is created from the lakes. This ties back to communication of the rep-resented space through experience rather than through visual method only, creating a memorable experience to those in contact.

PRECEDENCESCASE FOR INNOVATION

Furthermore, by employing a local material and being sub-ject to decay under different environmental conditions of the site, the Gateway holds the identity of where it is repre-senting rather than being an gateway to any other places.

The Computational design offers an approach in to a design space that otherwise would not have been pos-sible such as the generative forms of elements coming together to form a perfectly stable structure.

“Structure depends on the interdepen-dency of geometry and material.”

Voussair Cloud Protocells as dynamic structure

Lisa Iwamoto2008

Computational design offers a new possible creativity in architectural discourse.

From this precedents, the work explores in generative system of interdependent components to form a free standing coherent structure.Different to conventional structure of different structur-al element and the facade of the building, all components were created from a single element simply arranged in organised form.

This approach, not only bring in discourse with new methode of construction and infrastruc-ture but aslo metaphorically shows how elements can be organised to form one coher-ent structure. The diverse background of Wyndham City community can be expressed with different forms interlock-ing with each other working coherently a a structure.

It opens up our eyes in the field of morphogenetic system where like the molecular system of natural organims at microscopic level, where cells are organised in to the most functionally efficient structure which is useful for Gateway project.

COMPUTATIONAL DESIGNCASE FOR INNOVATION

INNOVATION AND PROMISE OF COMPUTATION

“Rather than simply con-suming software, IJP pro-duces the very material software is made of - raw equations - .... and hence maintains a far greater amount of control over what it designs and manufacture“

Parametric design and contemporary scrip-tion culture offers opportunity to create in-dividual design tools specific for a project.

With Gateway project that requires com-plex articulation of different crieterias, con-temporary scripting culture offer optimal solution. By modifying a design tools, more innova-tive and iconic possible solutions can be explored.

PARAMETRIC DESIGNCASE FOR INNOVATION

“It offers the experi-enced designer com-plete freedom in the way that they operate.” Burry, Mark (2011). Scripting Cultures: Architectural Design and Program-ming (Chichester: Wiley) -08

UNIQUE ADVANTAGES FROM PARAMETRIC MODELING

From the precedences, number of elements that will help to achieve our de-sign intent were revealed.

Within computational design, the team will explore an element of generative system that matches leading edge morphogenetic system and self organis-ing structure for innovative and ground breaking outcome. The morphoge-netic system will not only bring in discourse for its uniqueness but provides more stable structural quality as the components were organised in a perfect most efficient ways the natural molecules are organised.

The design process will involve form finding and designing through contem-porary computational methode for its vast possibilities in innovative design. The innovative architecture will bring in more discourse of wider public domain adding the place making quality of the project.

Furthermore, we will bring in the element of degredation and change with time through different materials over different natural conditions. This will bring in more discourse for its exciting characteristics of building while promoting the element of dynamic nature of the Wyndham City com-munity.

The circles are organised in what ap-pears to be a DNA genetic strands and there is an element of genera-tive system along that organisation. At the site, the aesthetic stimulating qualities will capture the attention of viewers even during a brief mo-ment and can communicate and create experience for them. This iconic design will furfill the brief while causing a discourse through its aesthetic and leading edge ele-ment of architecture.

Using parametric tools, physical model is created in order to further the experimentation with the no-tion of natural decay and deteriora-tion.

The model created has been formed in to a cast where different materials such as ice, plaster and clay were molded to create multiple exploration.

Physical modeling

The Gateway that acts as an ornament, representing a community of dynamic municipality, should not be too stunning, which moves away from the rural culture of the Wyndhma community, but should be subtle to bring in the cultural background of the site while having strong elements like dynamism.

Exploration

PHYSICAL MODEL AND EXPLORATIONRESEARCH PROJECT

The model is burnt in exploration to see its change in shape and form under a certain criteria. The materiality of the structure is very decisive in forming the shapes as different material has differ-ent properties in which it acts under such circum-stance.This exploration is not taken further as it did not much relate back to Gateway project.

The cast has been made and different material have been poured in create structure.Different models with different material is then tested under different environmental condi-tions that mimik the ecological system of the site.

In order to explore and document timely decay of the model, ice model has been made left to melt in the room temperature.

As you can see from the photos on the right, the ice melts down and forms water on the ground while the hexagonal shapes form intricate structure especailly at the top of the model.

Just like the precedence of Blur Build-ing, natural phenomenum can be used to create and destroy archi-tecture in which the process create experience and discourse. The idea is for the Gateway proeject to employ the similar ideas and use material that deteriorates with natural environment, the wind, humidity and sun.

With accordance to different materi-als reacting in different atmosphere through different period of time and changing their characteristics and properties. For example, structure can be made from incorporation of steel, clay and copper where it will corrode, deterio-rate differently with humidity wind and sunlgiht turning in to different colours and shapes.

Wyndham city is a complex network of various natural and man-made ecologies that emerge from the crossroads of city coast country. The social, historical and cultural aspects of Wyndham city perform as smaller components within a larger, intricate system.

The Wyndham city gateway project is an opportunity to showcase the Wyndham municipality as a rich, vibrant community. Through the gateway, we will put Wyndham city on the map extend-ing its identity past local and rural scales. The gateway will embody a relatable identity and manifest its cultural and social attitudes whilst promoting its evolutionary urban and ecological footprint.

With main focus on time and evolution, we will explore the notion of deterioration with regards to the ever changing nature of Wyndham city. By employing computational design, our dynamic design team brings together a wealth of practical and research-based architectural knowledge. We will endeavour to create an appealing, iconic, prominent, innovative, enriching, place-making solution that will further discourse on a global scale. Computational design techniques will be incorporated into the design process to engage self-organized structural systems that perform at an optimal level in terms of materiality and ingenuity, reflecting the complex network of Wynd-ham city as a biological organism. Our highly capable team will apply parametric tools necessary for a contemporary approach that is fundamental in enhancing design outcomes and a coherent investigation of promising solutions within the team’s established criteria.
