level CertificationAeron is certified level 2. The level conformancemark ensures a comprehensive, independent, and impartial assessment of the environmental

and social impacts of a product.

MBDC Cradle to Cradle CertificationAeron is MBDC Silver Cradle to Cradlecertified. This means that Aeron is composedof environmentally safe and healthy materials,is designed for material reuse in a closed-loopsystem, such as recycling or composting, andis assembled using 100% renewable energy.

Material ContentThe Aeron chairs components are constructedfrom aluminum, steel, plastic, and foam/textile.

The Aeron chair is up to 94 percent recyclableat the end of its useful life.

Aeron is comprised of up to 53-percentrecycled materials. This figure breaks down to31-percent post-consumer recycled contentand 20-percent to 22-percent pre-consumerrecycled content.

Design Story: Shifting ParadigmsHerman Millers Aeron chair rewrote the bookon office seating with its distinctive look andhigh-performance design. In addition to its

well-known ergonomic and functional qualities,Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick designed theAeron chair to be sparing of natural resources, durable and repairable, and constructed forease of disassembly and recycling.

From its earliest developmental stages, theAerons raw material selection and sourcingprocess emphasized environmental friendliness, with a preference for renewable, sustainable, and recycled source materials.

    Herman Millers Design Protocol

Our commitment to corporate sustainabilitynaturally includes minimizing the environmentalimpact of each of our products. Our Designfor the Environment team (DfE) appliesenvironmentally sensitive design standards toboth new and existing Herman Miller products, utilizing the McDonough Braungart DesignChemistry (MBDC) Cradle to CradleSM

    Design Protocol.

Cradle to Cradle Design Protocol goes beyondregulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluatenew product designs in three key areas:

Material Chemistry and Safety of InputsWhat chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available?

DisassemblyCan we take products apart atthe end of their useful life, to recycle theirmaterials?

RecyclabilityDo the materials containrecycled content, and more importantly, canthe materials be recycled at the end of theproducts useful life?

    Graphite or Titanium Base/Frame

    Polished Aluminum Base/Frame

Die-cast aluminum components are typicallymade from more than 95-percent recycledmaterial and are 100 percent recyclable.

Steel components contain approximately 33percent recycled content and are 100 percentrecyclable.

Aeron work chairs and stools contain no PVC. Most metal components have a powder-coat

paint finish that emits negligible volatileorganic compounds (VOCs).

Plastic components are identified with anASTM recycling code whenever possible,to aid in returning these materials to therecycling stream.

Foam and textile materials are part of anopen-loop system and can be recycled intoeverything from automotive components tocarpet padding at the end of their current life.

Returnable/Recyclable PackagingPackagingmaterials include corrugated cardboard and apolyethylene plastic bag. These materials arepart of a closed- loop recycling system, mean-ing they can be recycled repeatedly.

Whenever possible, shipments betweenHerman Miller and its suppliers includethe use of pallets and other returnablepackaging to minimize waste.

On large North American orders, disposablepackaging can be replaced with reusableshipping blankets.

Manufacturing Process Green Energy and EmissionsThe Aeron chair

is manufactured at Herman MillersGreenHouse seating operations in West

Michigan using green energy. ISOAeron is manufactured in West Michiganat an ISO 14001-certified site.

This plant also is a LEED Pioneer building. Worker Health and SafetyHerman Miller

strives to meet or exceed OSHA standards.

Product Performance Easy assembly for cost-efficiency and quick

parts replacement. Easy disassembly for recyclability. Designed for durability, an important environ-

    mental criterion.

Backed by Herman Millers 12-year,24/7 warranty.

Indoor Air QualityThe Aeron chair is GREENGUARD certifiedas a low-emitting product that meets currentindoor air quality standards.
