Yasser Eddebbar, ES&P BS stu dent, received the 2007 Provost Undergraduate Summer Research Award for research, scholarly, and crea tive activity. This summer, he con ducted research to identify greenhouse gas reducing policy options for the City of Laguna Beach. His faculty mentor was Dr. Darwin Hall, ES&P Co Director, ES&P and Economics Profes sor. Out of the 69 summer research awards granted, 30 awards were given to Col lege of Liberal Arts which ES&P is jointly housed under (COLA & CNSM).

His report titled Climate of Change: A set of policies and actions taken by local governments and the State of California to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, researched policies in place by cities similar to Laguna Beach with respect to specific geographic and demographic variables. The variables focused on were: climate, population, area size, population density, housing unit den

sity, and household income. Fifteen cities across the nation

were found to be geographically and demographically similar to Laguna Beach. The greenhouse gas reducing policies currently in place and actions being taken by each of the fifteen cities were researched along with those of the State of California. The report was com piled for the City of Laguna Beach Envi ronmental Commit tee to provide exam ples of actions and policies that the city could pursue at the local government level to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to being honored by receiv

ing the award, and gaining valu

able undergraduate research experi ence, Yasser was also able to gain course credit for his research by taking ES&P 499: Environmental Science & Policy Directed Study.

Yasser is a senior pursuing a BS in ES&P, Natural Sci ence track, with a Minor in Chemistry. He is looking forward to graduating next semester.

The complete report (98 pages) can be downloaded from the ES&P Program web

Great Job Yasser!

of the barrio Miraflores. I did the 4 day Inca Trail hike to visit Machu

Picchu, which was simply breathtaking and well worth the hike.” Danae graduated this spring with a BA in both ES&P and Political Science and a Minor in Economics. She received the

2007 CSULB Distin guished Undergraduate Student Medallion and the ES&P Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award. Upon returning from her trip, she com pleted a summer in ternship with CH2M Hill at Edwards Air Force Base in the Air

Quality Unit working on permits. She has just

started the Master of Environmental Science & Management Program at UC Santa Barbara and we wish her the best!

Danae Werthmann, ES&P Class of 2007, took a trip after graduation to South America. She shares her trip with us in words and photos: “This summer I went to South America and visited Brazil and Peru with my two best friends, Carolyn and Claudia. In Brazil, I went all over Rio de Janeiro and saw Christ the Redeemer, the Ca thedral and the beautiful tiled steps called Santa Teresa Mosaic Stairs by Jorge Saleron. In Foz de Iguacu we hiked all over to check out the many (250) waterfalls both on the Brazilian and Argentinian side. In Lima I went paragliding in Mira flores right off of Parque de Armor along the beach and saw Larco Mar and much

Recently, the ES&P Program, College of Liberal Arts, Departments of Geological Sciences and Geography, Environ mental Science & Policy Club, and ASI Conservation Commission sponsored the ES&P Fall 2007 Speaker Series where two employees of the California State Water Quality Control Board, Chris Beegan and Lisa Dernbach, spoke about water quality protection, regula tions and employment opportunities. Also part of the speaker series, two ES&P Alumni, Ben Tarbutton (Class of 2005) and Juana Quintana (Class of 2006), spoke about their transition from students to their careers. ES&P Alumni have been hired by em ployers such as: Converse Consultants, Philip Services Corporation, Andersen Environmental, CH2M Hill, Impact Sciences, EIR Consulting Firm, Na tures Image, Patriot Environmental Laboratory Services, CTL Environ mental Services, and Kootenai County Building and Planning Department, to name a few. The positions they are be ing hired for are: Staff Environmental Scientist, Environmental Waste Lab Technician, Staff Planner, Estimator

for Habitat Restoration Projects, Envi ronmental Technician, Environmental Scientist,

County Planner, Environmental Spe cialist. Both events provided the audience with valuable firsthand information on envi ronmental careers that the ES&P de gree prepares them for and valuable advice regarding the transition from getting your degree and getting a job. Some of the tips shared at the events were:

• Getting an internship gives you valuable experience & gets your foot in the door of many agencies & employers (you can get paid for some internships)

• It may take time to find a job after graduation (months even) so be aware of that and put in the time to apply to more than one employer

• Many jobs have an exam as part of

their hiring process so be prepared

• The first job you get will most likely not be your dream job nor your lastit may just be to gain ex perience

• Persistence pays off as one of the alumni pointed out that following up to applications is very important to show your interest (they may even remember your name by checking in often)

• Be flexible & willing to learn: hav ing a degree does not mean you know it allthere is still much to learn

• Take advantage of the Career De velopment Center (CDC) on cam pus whose services such as work shops, help with resumes, meeting with career advisors are free for up to one year after graduation

We hope these tips are helpful to you. To find out about student employment with the state, visit: http:// www.spb.ca.gov/jobs/special/ student_employment.htm

ES&P Career Corner Tips for Success

Sergio shared the following about his experience in pre paring for the event: “Currently

working on the KEEN Hybrid STAND campaign on our campus, promoting a documentary on sustainability to be shown on campus and a chance to win some green for thinking green...part of a sus tainability awareness effort on 50 universities across the na tion. So far it’s pretty exciting

and new for me...a great learning ex perience in networking, promoting, and marketing while also being involved in environmental action.”

By collaborating with many student and academic groups on campus for environmental events, the ES&P Student Club has been a great example of environmental community building on campus. The KEEN Hybrid STAND Campaign was a collaboration be tween the ES&P Club, CSULB’s KEEN Am bassador Sergio Rami rez, and the ASI Con servation Commis sion. Sergio, an ES&P & Geography BA student, has been involved with the ES&P Club for some time and was selected as the ambassa dor of our campus to hold the Hybrid STAND Campaign for sustainability.

The ES&P Fall 2007 Speaker series was a collaboration of student groups and academic groups (see article above for information). The Go Beach, Go Green Eco Week fair was a collabora tion between the ES&P Club and the ASI Conservation Commission. It was such a

success that it made the front page of our campus newspaper the Daily 49er!
