our mission
The Organisation for Economic Co-
operation and Development (OECD)
provides its 34 Member countries with a
forum to work together, share experiences
and seek solutions to common problems.
We analyse and compare data to predict
future trends. We set international
standards on a wide range of subjects, from
agriculture and tax to chemicals safety.
The common thread of our work is a shared
commitment to sustainable development,
employment and trade, based on
international co-operation and focused on
the well-being of all citizens.
peer reviews
With the support of the OECD Secretariat,
countries examine and assess one another’s
performance in order to improve their
policies. The reviews provide an independent
assessment and fact-based, targeted
recommendations to encourage further
reforms from a whole-of-government
perspective. Reviews are conducted to:
z Help countries measure their progress
in terms of domestic and international
commitments,
z Promote dialogue between countries
and peer learning,
z Enhance countries’ accountability to
the public and to one another.

About the OECD
Korea and the OECD
Korea joined the oecD in 1996. since then, its permanent representation and national experts are actively involved in the oecD’s thematic groups.

The OECD publishes an Economic Survey of Korea every 18 months, and policy reviews on a regular basis. The Better Life Index compares the quality of life in Korea with that in other Member countries.
Environmental Performance Reviews
since 1992, the oeCD has conducted over 80 Environmental Performance Reviews, drawing on economic and environmental data from national and international sources. oeCD member countries are now being reviewed for the third time.
A number of non-member countries have also been reviewed, such as Brazil, China, Colombia and south Africa.
z Key environmental trends describe
the country’s progress in using
energy and natural resources
efficiently; reducing the carbon
intensity of its economy; managing
its natural asset base; improving the
environmental quality of life.
z Policy-making environment reviews the country’s environmental
governance system, co-ordination
mechanisms, and how the country
integrates the environmental impact
of its sectoral policies.
z Towards green growth presents
the country’s efforts to mainstream
environment into the country’s
economic policy and to promote
the greening of the economy, for
example through the use of taxes
and other pricing instruments.
Each country also chooses two topics for
in-depth analysis. Korea selected:
z Waste and materials management
z Environmental justice.

The OECD Environmental Performance Review programme has been helping
member countries to improve their environmental management for 20 years. It
constitutes a unique review process that does not only identify problems and
solutions, but also presents - through its inclusiveness – useful knowledge and
concrete options for change in the countries under review.
