Biodiversityin SwanseaThe City and County of Swansea’snatural environment is of outstandingquality and beauty.

The diversity oflandscapes and habitatsincludes upland moorland, coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, heathland, woodland, wetlands, river valleys, grasslands, sand dunes andestuaries. These habitats, together with the manyhistoric parks and gardens, pockets of urbangreen-space and large areas of farmland, support ahuge diversity of plant and animal species and make Swansea one of the most attractive and ecologically diverse counties in the UK.

There are, however, many threats to Swansea’s wonderfulbiodiversity, such as lack of awareness, inappropriatemanagement, recreational pressure, invasive species, pollution, climate change and development.

To find out more about biodiversity in Swansea and what youcan do to help, visit: www.biodiversitywales.org.uk orwww.swansea.gov.uk/natureconservationteam

Countryside ConnectionsThis year sees the launch of Countryside Connections – anexciting new initiative that will enable people and communitiesacross rural Swansea to get hands-on with the conservationand enhancement of Swansea’s rural environment.

Swansea’s natural heritage needs protecting and looking afterbut it’s a big job! So, imagine if you and other local people hadthe skills and know-how to keep an eye on and look after thewildlife sites near where you live. Well, that’s what CountrysideConnections is all about – connecting people to the countrysideand helping them to appreciate, care for and enjoy it.

The project will provide training and volunteering opportunitiesincluding countryside management, wardening, ecologicalmonitoring, and crafts at a variety of rural sites.

Countryside Connections is part-funded through the RuralDevelopment Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by theWelsh Government and the European Union.

If you’d like to know more on how to get involved [email protected], or call 01792 636893.
