As the Commission's in-house science service, the Joint
Research Centre's mission is to provide EU policies with
independent, evidence-based scientific and technical
support throughout the whole policy cycle. Working in close
cooperation with policy Directorates-General, the JRC
addresses key societal challenges while stimulating
innovation through developing new methods, tools and
standards, and sharing its know-how with the Member States,
the scientific community and international partners.
Mission of the JRC
Integrated Sustainability Assessment of Energy
In support of EU energy union and
regional development policies

What we have done so far and what we plan to do
Completed
Shale gas (2012 & 2013) & own modelling (LUISA, 2013-2015)

Land-Use Integrated Sustainability Assessment Platform (LUISA)
Integrative concept of dynamic “land functions”:
• societal (e.g. provision of housing)
• economic (e.g. provision of products and services)
• environmental (e.g. provision of ecosystem services)
Outputs consistent with the EU strategies and policies (including the EU Energy and Climate Reference Scenario)
Continuously used in ex-ante and ex-post Impact Assessments
The central tool to support the JRC Knowledge Centre for Territorial Policies and EU Investments

Land-use based indicators: • Land-use/cover maps • Change hotspots • Regional changes • Land use intensity/abandonment
Thematic indicators: • Resources Supply / Demand • Urban/Regional Profiles • Regulatory Ecosystem Services • Sectoral employment & GVA
