School’s resources

Schools Environment Network

The Schools Environment Network is open to all teachers, principals, students, parents and school committee members from schools located in Moonee Valley. The group meets four times a year to discuss strategic and practical ways to get environmental initiatives running in schools.

Meetings include guest speakers, updates on council resources and opportunities to network with other teachers and participants. The meetings are hosted at local schools and may include a tour. Meetings are held 4.15pm to 5.30pm on a Thursday each term.

Green Book Box

Council offers a service for teachers to borrow a box of over 40 environmental themed picture books for age groups ranging from early learning to junior secondary school levels. The box requires pick up from Council and can be booked by contacting the Environment Sustainability team at environment@mvcc.vic.gov.au

Sustainability activity kit

This kit has been produced by the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and includes a model house, waste sorting game, sustainability activity kit and lesson plans to facilitate leaning about household sustainability relating to waste, water and energy efficiency.

The model house comes with magnets and play pieces illustrating household features such as water tanks, solar panels, double glazed windows and energy efficient appliances.

It is appropriate for both primary and secondary school ages. The kit may be borrowed from Council with a prior booking. Email environment@mvcc.vic.gov.au for bookings and more information.

Urban ecology

Moonee Valley is home to a wide range of native species and biodiversity and there are lots of great parks and resources to connect students to local nature.

Council resources

Volcano Dreaming

A 12 panel exhibit showcasing the natural vegetation of southern Victoria in pre-European times. This is a great resource to complement classroom curriculum around the natural environment. The pack also includes activities and more information about the vegetation and fauna. It can be picked up from Council.

Adopt a Street Tree

The program allows school children to water and look after their very own street tree near their school. The pack includes certificate and watering materials. See the Adopt a Street Tree information at mvcc.vic.gov.au/streettrees for contact details and more information.

Bird box monitoring

Council has bird boxes available for schools to take part in bird box monitoring. These boxes can support native bird populations by providing nesting sites and shelter for birds that would otherwise need tree hollows. The boxes can also provide suitable habitat for possums and bats. Bird boxes would require ongoing maintenance by schools to make sure no introduced species take up residence. Council’s Conservation Officer can provide advice on the bird boxes and answer any questions but is unable to install and check the boxes herself.

VAEE Great Grasslands Education Cards

Suitable for ages 3+, the set of 52 cards provide simple and interactive information on the animals, plants and insects of Victoria’s grassland ecosystems, including the species common name, scientific name and useful facts. National Tree Day

A nation-wide planting day connecting schools and communities with nature. The official tree planting day takes place in July however activities can take place all year round. More information for how to get your school involved can be found at

Walking School Bus

A fun, healthy and safe way for helping primary aged children to travel to and from school. Better moves around schools

This program brings Council and schools together to improve traffic safety and encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport. As part of the program, schools can apply for a grant to develop and implement a green travel plan for the school.

City West Water teacher resources

City West Water offers free incursions to schools for all age groups involving the water cycle and water conservation. These incursions usually last for one hour and are available for groups of up to 30 students. The program is limited to one incursion per year for each school. City West Water also offers free excursions to Melbourne’s Western Treatment Plant Discovery Centre in Werribee for up to 90 students (grade 3 to VCE). Recycling services

Council offers recycling services to schools including:

Up to 15 yellow-lidded 240 litre bins collected fortnightly

Classroom recycling boxes

Compost buckets for classrooms and staff rooms

Magnetic recycling boards

This interactive activity allows children to learn about recycling in Moonee Valley. The education program has two components:

Magnetic board activity – these large magnetic boards can be used as part of a whole of class room activity where children place the item in the correct bins. Great to use in competitions to see who can sort the items quickest.

Sticker books – Sticker waste and recycling items onto the correct bins, can be done in the classroom or at home with parents.

Schools can borrow the magnetic recycling boards from Council for two weeks at a time. Email environment@mvcc.vic.gov.au or call 9243 9165 if you would like to book the boards.

VELS Level 3 waste education materials

Council has developed a curriculum unit for VELS Level 3 suitable for grades 3 and 4, investigating what happens to waste in Moonee Valley, reducing waste and recycling as well as what students can do to make a difference. The unit has been designed using the E5 model: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate. Useful tips when applying for grants

Ensure your community group or school are well aware of the project and are supportive of it.

Have a general grant application template ready to go but be sure to tailor your application for each grant.

Be sure all criteria and guidelines are met for each application to ensure that your application will not be pushed aside on a technicality.

Be sure your application clearly outlines project goals and how they will be achieved. Include what benefits it is expected to have for the community or your school and use statistics if possible.

Apply for grants whose funding bodies best align with the ethos of your project. You may research what they have funded in the past to get an idea.

For larger amounts of funding be sure all specific costs of the project are outlined and a risk management analysis is included.

For smaller amounts, especially when the whole project is not expected to be funded by the grant, ensure that the specific components of the project which the grant will be going towards are clearly outlined in your application.

Once a grant is received be sure to keep records, photos etc. of the ongoing or completed project in case proof is needed from the grant provider.

Community resources

Community gardens

There are eight community gardens in Moonee Valley. The gardens are spread across Moonee Valley on reserves, at neighbourhood houses and on public housing estates. Some of the gardens require being placed on a waiting list while others are available at all times for communal gardening. Opportunities are also available to join working bees and workshops. Waste and disposal resources

Below are some Council resources to help with disposal and recycling of materials in Moonee Valley.

Community recycling trailer

Council’s recycling trailer encourages residents to recycle at community events. This mobile recycling station holds six 240 litre bins, giving residents the ability to run their own Waste Wise Events to divert waste from landfill. Information on running a Waste Wise Event is located at sustainability.vic.gov.au

Residents pick the trailer up from Council’s Depot, fill it up with recyclables at their event and return it to be recycled at Council’s Transfer Station. The trailer helps to reduce the impact events have on the environment by diverting recyclables away from landfill, to be recovered and recycled into new products.

This trailer is able to be used by Moonee Valley residents, community groups and schools and is available free of charge. Please contact Citizens Services at Council to make a booking 9248 8888.

e-waste

e-waste, or electronic waste, is one of the fastest growing waste types in Australia. Computers, mobile phones, televisions and other electronic devices that are no longer needed are often thrown into landfill because people are unsure of what to do with them. However, these products may be of use to someone else or they may be recycled.

Council’s Transfer Station accepts computers, printers, faxes and accessories to be recycled through the Tech Collect program. Up to 15 items at a time can be dropped off. The Depot can be contacted at:
