STRAIGHT
Straightorsquareflapshaveacleandesignwithastraight-edgeflap.Idealforenvelopeswithgraphicsprintedacrosstheentirebackof theenvelope,thestraightflapisthe most common envelope flap style.
COMMERCIAL
Acommercialflapisacommonbowedorcontouredflapwithangledshouldersandascoopedthroat,offeringpremium, high-speedinserterperformance.Tension’sPerformancePlus™ envelopesfeatureacommercialflap.
BANKERS
Alonger,bowedorcontouredflapthatcontributestotheelegance ofabankenvelope.
WALLET
Astraightflapenvelopedesignedwithanextra-long,deepflapand wide-gummedarea.Walletflapenvelopesareusedprimarilybybanksandinvestmentfirms,astheyofferreliabledocumentprotection.
REVERSE
Reverseflapsaredesignedsotheflapisatthebottomfoldwhentheenvelopeisorientedtoproperlyreadtextonthefaceoftheenvelope.
REMITTANCE
Astraight,deepflapthatextendsalmosttothebottomoftheenvelope.Theselargeflapscanbeprintedontheinsideandusedasaformtocollectimportantinformationthatcanbesealedandhiddenforsending.
BANGTAIL
Abangtailenvelopefeaturesanextra“tail”flapthatisprintedasaformandperforatedalongthetopoftheenvelope’sbackpanel.Thisdesignallowsuserstotearitoff,filloutinformationandplacethis“tail”flapbackintotheenvelopeforsending.
BARONIAL or ANNOUNCEMENT
Twodiagonallinescometogethertocreateapointedv-shapedflap, andcommonlyfeaturediagonalsideseams.Thebaronialenvelopehasadeep-pointedflapandispopularforuseongreetingcardsandsocialstationery. This style is not recommended for printing or automatic insertion.

DOUBLE SIDE SEAM
Doublesideseamstuckunderneaththebackpanelalongthesidesoftheenvelope.Theyareoftenseenonopensidebusinessorcommercialenvelopes.They’remanufacturedonwebordiecutequipment,andbecauseofthespaceopenonthebackoftheenvelope,areidealforprintingtranspromotionalmessages–copy ontheouterenvelopetohelpcross-sell,up-sell,reinforcebrand,etc.
DIAGONAL SIDE SEAM
Diagonalsideseamsrundiagonallyacrossthebackofanenvelope.They’remanufacturedondiecutequipmentandareoftenusedforsmallerorderquantitiesunder100,000envelopes.
CENTER SEAM
Usually,acatalog,policyorcoinopenendenvelopehasacenterseam.
SINGLE SIDE SEAM
Asinglesideseamisanopenendenvelope.Theseamcanbeorientedontheleftorright.

TYPES OF CLOSURES
• REMOISTENABLE GUM Thisisthemostcommonwaytocloseanenvelope. Theadhesiveisawater-solublegum.Flapscanbefullyorpartiallycoveredwithremoistenablegum.
• LATEX GUM(alsocalledSELF-ADHESIVEGUM) Latexgumisapressure-sensitivegumappliedalongtheedgeoftheflapand/ortheupperpartofthebackoftheenvelopetocreateaself-sealingenvelope.Ithasalimitedshelflife. Herearedifferenttypesoflatexgums:
• SEAL’NRESEAL®isapressure-sensitivegumthatisusedonphotoenvelopes.Itallowsformultipleopeningsandclosingsoftheflap.
• TOUCH-’N-SEAL® isasingle-use,pressure-sensitivegumappliedtobankingandturn-up,turn-downenvelopes.Theclosureonlyworksonce.Thistypeofgumadherestoothergum.
• PEEL-N-SEALispressure-sensitivegumwithawaxy,releasecoatpaper.Becausethewaxypapercoveringthegummustberemoved,thesetypesofsealantsarenotcompatiblewithinsertermachines.Thistypeofgumadherestopaper.
• STRINGandBUTTON Alsoknownas“tensiontie”orstringandbutton. Thisclosurefeaturesbuttonsontheflapandback oftheenvelopethataresecuredwithastring.

• DOUBLE SCORE Anadditionalscorelineusuallypositionedabout 1/8" to1/4" downfromtheregularsealflapscore. Itisusedonenvelopesholdingthickercontentstorelievepressureonthesealflapandkeepitsecure.
• EMBOSSING Aspecialrollerisplacedonthefoldingmachineandcreatestextureonplainpapertogiveitahigh-end,appealinglookandtactilefeel.Envelopescanbespotembossed(limitedtoasinglearea)orembossedoverall.
• INVOLVEMENTDEVICES Engagingmailfeaturescanhelpincreasecustomerattentionspansandresponserates.Involvementdevicessuchasrepositionablestickynotesorzipstripscallforrecipientstointeractwiththeenvelope.

Printing on the envelope is your opportunity to add color, personality, and in some cases, life to your envelope.
Printingcanbedoneeitherbeforeoraftertheenvelopeissenttoaweborblankconvertingpress.Awebconvertingpressisonethatacceptscontinuousrollsofpaperdirectlytothefoldingmachineforcutting, foldingandgluing.Ablankconvertingpressacceptsdiecutpaperin theformofanenvelope,whichisthenfoldedandglued.
Here’sanoverviewofthetypesofprintingprocessesandoptionsavailable.
• FLEXOGRAPHIC–Polymerplatesdirectlytransferinktothepaperlikeastamp.Flexographicprintingcanbedonebeforeorafterbeingrunthroughafoldingmachine.
• ENHANCEDFLEXOGRAPHY–Typicallyusedtoprint4-colorprocess(CMYK)imagery,enhancedflexographyusesacentralimpressionprintcylindertoachievetighterprintregistrationanddigitalprintingplatestoachievefinerscreensandprintresolutiononcalendarizedpapers.Comparedtoregularflexographicprinting,enhancedflexographyenablesprinterstodelivermoreelaborateandhigherqualityimages.

BASIS WEIGHTS
Basisweightdescribesthecollectiveweightofthefibersthatmakeupthepaper.Ingeneral,thebasisweightiscalculated astheweightof500sheets(e.g.areamofpaper)inthebasicsizeof17" x22"forenvelopepaperforthegivenpapergrade. Forexample,a28#envelopegradepaperrepresentstheweightof50017" x22"sheetsandnottheactualenvelopeitself.
Anothermethodtodeterminepaperbasisweight,alsoknownaspapersubstanceweight,isbymeasuringthethicknessorcaliperofthepaper.Belowisareferencetableofsomecommonsubstanceweights:
