l Methanex Maths Spectacular 2015 Informa on Booklet4
Introduc onMethanex is pleased to support the Maths Spectacular in 2015, making it the 26th year we’ve been involved. Mathema cs is widely used in life and in a whole range of occupa ons; it helps us to think logically and solve problems, which are vital skills for our business and many others. We also think that mathema cs should be fun and engaging, something this event certainly succeeds in doing.
A li le bit about us: Methanex is the world’s largest supplier of methanol. Methanol is an essen al ingredient used to produce hundreds of everyday industrial and consumer items, including building materials, foams, resins, plas cs, paints, and a variety of health and pharmaceu cal products. It’s also a clean-burning alterna ve fuel for powering vehicles and ships, cooking food and hea ng homes.
Methanol is a clear liquid —CH3OH – four parts hydrogen, one part oxygen and one part carbon. Our three plants in Taranaki produce pure methanol by reforming natural gas with steam and then pu ng the resul ng synthesized gas mixture through a conversion and dis lla on processes. To do this requires a highly skilled and diverse workforce of 250 employees.
We employ engineers, laboratory technicians, operators, maintenance tradespeople, draughtspeople, accountants, managers and many more; all who require a solid educa on in mathema cs. The Maths Spectacular is a great way to get excited about maths, along with some healthy compe on too.
A big thanks to our hosts this year, New Plymouth Boys’ High School, all the teachers in the region involved and other sponsors. And of course, thank you to the many students who par cipate. Judges and viewers are always impressed with the high standard of projects entered.
