The glow that day didn’t shine brightly from the sun through the window of Dolphin Hotel, but from the outfits and smiles of the congregation of the Place of Victory on Sunday 4th October. In celebration of Black History Month and the unity of the world through God, the day was filled with jubilatory music and praise in many languages.

It was a privilege to join the service which encouraged every individual from India, Africa, America, and Europe to worship in their native tongue, to share songs and dances which demonstrate their nation’s culture and praise. Led by Pastor Felix Makanjuola Jr, the event was compeered by Ayo and Marcus who artfully engaged the audience. The songs, dancing and praise were followed by prayers and testimony. Afterwards we shared a feast of well prepared foods from welsh cakes to pounded yam. It truly was a great way of getting to know each other better, and a wonderful start to a fantastic series of events celebrating Black History Month!

Welcome to another edition of Enthuse. If we have left you wanting more for some time now, it is because we were in-terested in giving you the very best. Thus, we had to go back to the drawing-board to refocus our energies and maxi-mise our potentials. On behalf of the En-thuse team, I would like to say a big

thank you for your patience, support, prayers and en-couragement over the last year; we couldn't have done it without you. To kick of the year, we bring you a collec-tion of events and our story so far in the last year of our existence and prepare you for what is to come in 2010.

This edition is heavily focused on our church and it’s interaction with the wider community. We believe strongly that we

are here to make impact not just in the confines of the four walls of our meeting place but in the wider society. Please enjoy our view of 2009’s International Day, Service on the Beach, Fresher’s Fayre at the Swansea University and a host of other events and articles that are sure to bless you.

It is also with great pleasure that I introduce to you Zoë Abbott, our new Managing Editor. Zoë works in administration for Swan-sea University and worships with the RCCG Swansea. Having obtained her 2:1 in History and Philosophy, she went to America as a volunteer support worker with the University of New Mexico. However, her love of the dear city of Swansea brought her back here in 2006. In her young career Zoë’ has managed a number of personnel teams and char-ity events and hopes this experience helps our team produce an inspiring magazine for you to read. If you can’t find Zoë slaving away at her computer, you might wish to look outside as she’s often attempting to play football, or she’s running or mountain biking.

So sit back, relax and have a good read. Do remember to keep in touch.

God bless.

practical steps to

improving your grades

TIMETABLE Do you have a clearly thought out reading plan? Do you cover all subject areas equally? Are you focusing mainly on subject areas you are interested in? If you do this, you are figuratively 'shooting yourself in the foot'. All areas must be covered thor-oughly even the ones you don't like - you may need to spend extra time on the not so interesting areas. LAST MINUTE.COM? Are you 'last minute.com'? It is a great misconception that if you read for prolonged hours or just a few days to the exam you are actually reading a lot. The truth of the matter is that the brain can only assimilate a certain degree of information at any one time, after which it shuts down. So, you may be spending long hours reading but not assimilating any more information than you did in the first 2-3 hours. The trick is not to leave your study to the last minute. Spread out your study plan. Read little by little, right from day 1, so that nearer to the exam what you read will only be revision (confirmation of what you have already learnt and committed to memory) and not new information. In any case, the more you read a particular piece of information, the more likely it is to stick in your memory. APPROACH YOUR TEACHERS Have you approached your lecturers? The truth of the matter is your lecturers are the ones that will mark your exams. Sometimes it may not be that you do not understand the exam questions, it may just be that you are not answering the question the way the lecturer or examiner would like it an-swered. Teachers and lecturers all over the world are always more than willing to help students, because it is a human privilege to want to pass the knowledge you have to someone else. So don't be scared to ask your lecturers - What exactly is this question asking? Now obviously, you won't have this lux-ury in the exam hall, so you need to have done this before hand. That leads me to the next point 'PRACTICE'. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! You have heard it said before that practice makes perfect. Have you rehearsed? When you go to live shows and concerts and you think the band is tight, it is because they have re-hearsed well. In fact, the real concert was done in their garage or studio, where it was energetic and explosive. What you see on stage is just a tip of the iceberg of what they can really do and before they do a free-style or impromptu act, they would have usually rehearsed it to some degree. So practice your way to that ‘A’ grade you want. I remember when I was studying for my driving theory test, I used a CD-ROM that had the practice questions. By the time I had finished with the CD-ROM, I knew where and what the answers would be without even fully reading the question. So, get past question papers and literally 'tear it apart' so that by the time you enter the exam hall, you are confident of nothing less than 80% (and that is even on a bad day).

Place of Victory was well-represented at 2009’s Swan-sea University annual fresher’s fayre. Some of the members of the church kindly volunteered to man the stall, give out free gifts and “sign-up” new students to the church. It was a very enjoyable experience.

11. WATCH OUT FROM THE START Statistics shows that the first year of marriage is the when couples are most likely to divorce, followed by the sec-ond year. So don’t put yourself under too much stress during those two years. Remove as much outside strain from your life as possible so you can focus your energy on working out whatever problems arise in your mar-riage. Sharing a life together, is not an easy task. Remember marriage is not a sprint, so don’t rush it. 12. LOOK FOR SOLUTIONS Focus on finding solutions to your problems. This is our month of focus and we have been saying that what you focus on will consume your mind in its entirety. Always look for a way out and stop highlighting the prob-lems. For example, if your spouse likes to leave clothing on the floor, don’t go on the attack and call him or her a slob. Instead, look for a solution. For example, offer to put a box on the floor in the corner of the room where your partner can leave the clothing. If you concentrate on finding solu-tions, you’ll avoid many conflicts. 13. HAVE CONFLICT RESOLU-TION TIME Set aside time to work out the prob-lems that keep recurring in your rela-tionship. This should be a time when both of you are relaxed and willing to discuss these matters. Otherwise, the issues might arise at times when you

times 30-70. They realize that in fighting for a perfectly fair system, they’ll lose more than they’ll gain. Michael and Alice have a joint account into which they deposit their monthly salaries. They worked out an arrange-ment whereby each may spend £100 monthly on anything they want without consulting the other. Although Michael earns more and thus might deserve to spend more than her, he realises that she does more of the housework, and therefore agreed they could spend equal amounts. 15. DON’T GIVE UP Even in the best marriages couples sometimes have conflicts. The “happily ever after” ending so com-monly found in our films, theatre and literature is not true. A realistic por-trayal of a good, happy marriage is one in which two people sometimes argue but are able to work out their differ-ences peacefully. So if you and your spouse are not get-ting along well, don’t give up, work on your relationship. The summary of these practices can be summarized in the Bible verse that concisely defines how love in marriage should be. I Corinthians 13:4-5 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered and it keeps no re-cord of wrongs.” I pray God continues to bless your marriage. Amen.

may not have the patience and good-will necessary to deal with them. 14. MINIMIZE MONETARY CON-FLICTS Money issues are among the most com-mon causes of conflict among couples; 67% of newlyweds said how their money should be spent caused the most arguments. If you find yourselves arguing over money, work out a system you can both live with. Here is how two couples worked out their money matters: John and Alice have three separate ac-counts - one for him, one for her, and a joint account. They deposit their salaries into separate accounts then contribute an agreed sum to their joint account. When a bill comes for a shared expense – like the mortgage or the gas bill - they pay it from their joint account. When they want to save for the future, they both put equal amounts into a joint savings account. This system works for them because they’re each willing to pay a bit more than their share to preserve marital har-mony. For example, if John thinks Alice is on the phone a lot one month, he does-n’t ask her to pay most of that month’s phone bill. He knows the bill is small and that it’s not worth risking a potential argument over it; when Alice sees that John makes a ten-minute overseas call that she feels is unnecessary, she says nothing for the same reason. Thus, al-though they set up a 50-50 system, each has an attitude of ignoring the little things even if that means their relation-ship may in fact be 40-60 or even some-

The Shack - by Wm Paul Young

About Book:

“Mackenzie Allen Philip’s youngest daughter has been ab-ducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, appar-ently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a week-end.

“Against his better judgement he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever.

“In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrele-vant THE SHACK wrestles with the timeless question, “Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps trans-form you as much as it did him. You’ll want everyone you know to read this book!”

Review:

This intimate story of personal loss allows an honesty of feel-ing from which Mackenzie Allen Phillips struggles with our most difficult question: if there is a God, how does he allow such terrible suffering in the world? As Mack battles with his faith he is called to face the principle cause of his pain… and doubt. Well written, this book is a compelling page-turner which could challenge your preconceptions of God, and what it means to be His child.

The 13th of May 2009 was a memorable day for many members of the Place of Victory as it marked the first Worker’s graduation ceremony. Following weeks of interesting and interactive training sessions delivered by the gifted Pastor of the church, Felix Makanjuola (Jr.), the ceremony was put together by the church to acknowledge the hard work of the grandaunts. The event had in attendance the Area Pastor of the Church – Pastor Felix Makanjuola (Sr.) who gave the sermon and presented certificates to the grandaunts. Families and friends were pre-sent to share in the joy of the celebrants and the feeling of accomplishment and pride could be felt in the atmosphere as the graduates rejoiced and thanked God for a successful completion of the workers-in-training programme as well as an opportu-nity to serve in the church.

The newly graduated workers of the Place of Victory were treated to a team-building social event by their Pastor, Felix Makanjuola Jr. Rendezvous was the popular Oakwood Theme Park which prides itself as the only ad-venture park in the whole of Wales. The experience itself started from the journey to the designated venue tucked nicely in the heart of Pembrokeshire, about 90mins away from Swansea. The journey was extra special as it was also the first time the newly purchased church bus would be used, making each worker in attendance privy to being the first passenger on board.

At Oakwood, everyone had the opportunity to go on dif-ferent exciting rides, from the docile Plane Crazy ride to the adrenalin-charged ones such as Speed and The Bounce, and the hugely exciting Splash! It was a fun-packed outing indeed although quite unfortunately, no one was risqué enough to attempt the Vertigo which was considered as one test to far in the race for being adven-turous. At the end of the day, everyone was treated to a light lunch and the smile and pleasant fatigue on every-one’s face was testament to the success of the trip.

Everyone is chanting Happy New Year! The atmosphere is full of optimism mixed with despair from the previous year's shortcomings. The New Year for some is a time to reflect and take stock of life, to some it's a time to set out new resolutions, some

see a New Beginning, and to another it's just another day. What do you see?

Pastor Felix Makanjuola Jr.

Page 15: Enthuse January Edition 2010

15

Once more the celebration of a New Year has just gone. It is the time everyone feels there is an opportunity to turn a new leaf. A New Year promises the opportunity of a fresh start.

The truth is God is also interested in giving us a fresh start. In Exodus, the children of Israel were in bondage in Egypt for about 430 years after which God delivered them by His great hand. Just before God unleashed the last plague on the Egyptians, He said to Moses in Ex. 12:2, “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.”

A lot of us have experienced setbacks, disappointments, and unfilled goals in the last year but a New Year gives us an op-portunity to make a fresh start. It is important that we give God thanks first of all for making it possible for us to see this New Year because as the bible says “a living dog is better than a dead lion.”

Once there is life, there is hope.

As we go into this New Year, we need to forget the mistakes that we made in the last year in order to move forward. Many times at the beginning of each year we make New Year reso-lutions which we are not able to keep and as a result many of us have resulted to taking life as it comes instead of giving life our very best. God understands our plain frustration for we have a High Priest that can sympathize with the feelings of our weaknesses as He was tempted as we are.

As we journey through this New Year, it is important to note that God knows that we cannot fulfil the plans He has for us without His help and that is why He has given us the Holy Spirit.

When the children of Israel were about to commence their journey, God gave them a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night to lead them in the way. God also promised to send an Angel before them to keep them in the way and bring them to the place He has prepared for them. The Holy Spirit is to us what the Angel and the pillar of cloud and fire were to the children of Israel.

When we are plagued by thoughts of our failures in the past year, the Holy Spirit helps us overcome those thoughts by giving us thoughts of hope (thoughts of God) – God’s thoughts towards us are of peace and not of evil to give us a hope and a future. When we feel we can go no further in ful-filling God’s plans for our lives like Elijah, He responds with the still small voice. When we feel confused and as though we are moving round in circles, He takes us by the hand and gen-tly leads us through the paths that God had pre-ordained that we would walk in. When we are tempted to compare our pro-gress with the progress of our peers, He shows us once again the uniqueness of God’s plans and expectations of us.

I have no doubt as we become more conscious of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives throughout this New Year that at the end of this year, we would have accomplished far above what we ever planned or imagined. God has a lot in store for us this year don’t let your past hold you back. It is time to take a new leaf, grab life with all enthusiasm. There is noth-ing that can limit you. The only limitations you have are the ones in your mind – free your mind and allow the muscles of your mind to exercise creative ideas.

Deji Juba talks music at Place of Victory’s

Make the World Your Stage - Black History Event.

Report by Zoe Abbott.

It’s hard for a singer to come from a more humble beginning, than as someone who can’t sing. It’s hard to imagine this smartly dressed, char-ismatic compare as the shy university student hiding amongst the other-wise all-female choir, determined to do just one thing: sing well. DJ stood before us with a charming glint in his eye of someone who is truly proud and pleased to be standing right where he is, in his own shoes, with his achievements to sing a testament to all he believes in.

You see DJ can sing, now. He is part of the internationally acclaimed band Four Kornerz, and the spring in his step hides easily that he’s just stepped down in the middle of a European tour, including singing at the O2 Wireless stage in London. He has a message, and he wants to share it: the following messages are from DJ as he shares his thought’s on this year’s Black History Month topic: The World is Your Stage and the suc-cess he has achieved… and so he begins:

Life is an abstract painting – the design is not necessarily one of choos-ing, nor of legible plan to outsiders but this doesn’t make it any less exciting or exhilarating! The band started out at weddings and the like, they went through being managed by an uncle, then onto contract with a label and they’ve recently played with Marvin Sapp!

Q&A with DJ

You said you can’t sing, but now you’re great! How?

Practice makes perfect – being on stage builds your confidence also, when I’m on stage I worry less about it, because if I mess up then at least I’m already where I want to be: on stage! It’s really useful though to have a role model and imitate the techniques which you admire. Also, keeping enthusiasm really helps.

Do you feel nervous on stage?

I’m nervous now! But nerves aren’t the enemy, it’s a natural feeling and you just need to rise above that and concentrate on what you are doing: take a moment out to relax: remember that full time musicians have a whole team behind them to help with this, every individual works better with a bit of help!

I want to sing but don’t want to sound like anyone but me – is it necessary to have an idol?

It’s not necessary, just useful – the idea is not to copy or mimic but to be influenced by their attributes. Take Whitney Huston, even if you don’t like her music, you can’t deny she is a talented singer, if talent comes from God it’s not bad to be influenced by that to learn those techniques.

How do you deal with female attention?!

I am blessed to have three brothers who are better looking

than me! But also, despite some rather interesting (rude) requests faith, and a faithful support team keep temptation and the mortal apart.

Any last tips?

If you are interested in making a career in music/singing I’d like to recommend: “Singing for the Stars” by Seth Riggs, and lots and lots of practice!
