The 12th century is when sunglasses were invented properly, in China. They were using lenses made from imperfection-heavy quartz to block out the light from the sun, and primitive frames to hold them against the wearer’s face. These sunglasses didn’t protect against harmful UV rays or help the wearer to see any better (in fact, they made it very difficult to see), but they provided some relief from having the bright sun constantly shining into their eyes. Only the rich had them, but they found many uses for them - Chinese rulers and judges, for example, found that they could use the sunglasses to hide the expression on their face when they were talking to someone, allowing them to seem emotionally detached from situations.

It was not until the 20th century that sunglasses really took off, though, as Hollywood stars started wearing them to protect their eyes from the bright studio lights. By 1929, an entrepreneur named Sam Foster had put sunglasses into mass production in America, and was doing a roaring trade through his company, Foster Grant of Atlantic City. In 1936, Polaroid filters were invented, allowing glasses to protect against UV rays for the first time, and making them a desirable item for health reasons as well as for reasons of fashion and comfort - useful in World War II, when soldiers had to fight in the French summer. Since then, there have been few developments in sunglasses, with the basic science and materials remaining basically the same for the last seventy years - but, like other useful inventions of the period, they remain a big seller.

What do you look for when buying a pair? There are lots of things to look for when you’re buying sunglasses. The most important is comfort and the glasses not falling off your head. Realistically you need to have tried on sunglasses before you buy them, unless you have bought similar style glasses before. As long you buy glasses that are comfortable, then the second most important aspect is the polarisation or UV400 protection. This is really important to protect your eyes from UV light which can cause some eye issues over time. Simple shaded sunglasses actually make your eyes wider which subjects them to more UV light than they would be without sunglasses.

SaffronSaffron is a flower used as a food additive. The Encyclopedia of

Psychoactive Substances states that the orange-yellow flower “…is known

to have…narcotic effects similar to those of opium.” Saffron actually has

an ancient history of use as a drug – the Ancient Minoans used to drink a

tea infusion of it to get high, and the Persians and Greeks considered it an

aphrodisiac. The Romans and Egyptians used it in various medicines.

UrineAt one time, Eskimos and tribes in Siberia were known to consume the urine of another person who had consumed fly agaric mushrooms (amanita muscaria). They did so for several reasons: Firstly, since there wasn’t an infinite supply of mushrooms, this approach helped to conserve and economize them. Not only would drinking the urine of someone who had consumed the mushroom get you high, but also drinking the pee of the person who had drunk the first “batch” of urine would get you high! And so forth and so on, going up to 5 different “generations” of people! An added benefit was that pre-digested mushrooms didn’t cause as much nausea and cramps as just eating them directly. They loved this high so much, that they would butcher and eat reindeer that had also eaten fly agaric for yet another high!

Old BooksAlright, it’s not exactly old books, it is the fungi and molds that occasionally grow on them! Some of these molds and fungi are said to have hallucinogenic effects. Don’t go eating pages of old books right-off-the-bat, though. They usually also come with side-effects, such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion!

NutmegNutmeg contains myristicin, which is a psychoactive compound belonging to

the deliriant drug family. Myristicin is a potent narcotic compound that can

cause hallucinations if consumed in high amount. Nutmeg apart from acting as

a spice, can produce a high that is similar to the effect of marijuana. It may also

be responsible for several other side effects.

Nutmeg is often used in the preparation of many dishes including the very famous

eggnog. But a sprinkle of nutmeg on the eggnog is not going to cause the hallucinating

effects. One must consume several grams of nutmeg in order to feel the physcho-active effects. A dose of about

two tablespoons, which is between 5 and 15 grams of grated nutmeg, can get you high by inducing a narcotic

reaction. The effect of nutmeg takes several hours to reach the peak, just like the other deliriants. It takes about

6 hours for an individual to begin feeling minimal effects. The effects can range from a mild high to a full blown

deliriant experience with visual as well as auditory hallucinations.

Nutmeg being inexpensive and readily available, its use as a recreational drug is quite common in prison inmates

who had access to the kitchen, and also with those who are unable to obtain the illicit drugs!

- Psychoactive Agent

CatnipIt’s not just for cats anymore! Many who have

smoked it say that it gives a mellow, pot-like

buzz – though most warn that you should not

get your hopes up too high. It leaves a minty

aftertaste and is apparently much easier to

smoke than pot (and doesn’t cause coughing).

DDT

Yes, this pesticide, which has now been made illegal in many countries, can produce feelings somewhat like Ecstasy. A popular cocktail was made during the ’50s (called the Mickey Slim) and was made by adding a small amount of DDT to gin!

If you have been watching Coronation Street over the last month the topic of domestic violence against men has been most prevalent. The character Tyrone is presently undergoing abuse from his girlfriend which seems to be getting increasingly worse. The soap is shining light on a serious topic that up until the last decade or so, was considered a taboo subject. Men used to suffer in silence as it was deemed humorous that a man could be over-powered by a woman. It is only now since the media has shed more light on the matter, that cases are taken with extreme seriousness, as the severity of some cases is no laughing matter.

The gender-centric message gives the impression, perhaps unintentionally, that domestic violence and partner-abuse is only committed by men. Man-on-woman violence tends to be seen through a criminal lens, while woman-on-man violence is viewed more benignly. This seems to be due to the fact that we don’t perceive men as victims. We see women as being more vulnerable than men. Studies have found that a man who calls the police to report domestic violence is three times more likely to be arrested than the woman who is abusing him.

More than 200 survey-based studies also show that domestic violence is just as likely to strike men as women.

Here are some examples of high profile domestic violence cases against men throughout history:

Abraham LincolnAccording to Michael Burlingame, a history professor at Connecticut College and the author of “The Inner World of Abraham Lincoln”, Mary Todd used to beat the hell out of Abe Lincoln. Apparently, one time, Abe didn’t put enough wood on a fire, so Mary Todd hit him with a log. Another time, Abe didn’t buy the right kind of meat for breakfast, so Mary Todd smacked him in the face and drew blood. By all reports, he hated his marriage; in 1864, he pardoned a Union soldier who abandoned the Army to marry his childhood sweetheart... and, while signing the pardon, Lincoln said, “I want to punish the young man. Probably in less than a year, he’ll wish I had withheld the pardon.”

Bobby BrownEveryone thinks Bobby Brown used to hit Whitney Houston... but, according to Whitney herself, it was the opposite. In an interview with the AP 10 years ago, Whitney said, “Contrary to belief, I do the hitting, he doesn’t. He has never put his hands on me. We are

crazy for one another. I mean crazy in love, love, love, love, love. When we’re fighting, it’s like that’s love for us. We’re fighting for our love.”Well, that DOES kind of sound like the greatest love of all.

Humphrey Bogart

Apparently, Bogart and his third wife, Mayo Mathot, used to get into alcohol-induced fights all the time. So why is he on the victims list? One of those fights ended up with her stabbing him in the back. (Not metaphorically.)

Christian SlaterBack in 2003, Christian Slater and his wife, Ryan Haddon Slater, got into a fight at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas. She threw a glass at him and it shattered on his neck, requiring 20 stitches. She was arrested for domestic battery.

Bill ClintonIn the biography of Hillary Rodham Clinton called “Hillary’s Choice”, Hillary used to routinely beat on Bill, including one time after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke. In a stranger, earlier incident, in 1993, Hillary

scratched Bill’s face with her nails and left marks on his chin. That happened after she got upset following a visit to the White House by Barbara Streisand. The book doesn’t explain further... did Bill hit on Barbara Streisand? Did Barbara’s music drive Hillary to the point of rage? I’m afraid we’ll never know.

Stephen HawkingAccording to reports in 2004 (which Hawking denied), his second wife, Elaine, was abusive to Hawking... which even led to him being hospitalized with a broken wrist and cuts on his face. See, that’s why he needs to equip his wheelchair with a go-go-gadget boxing glove.

Lionel RichieIn 1988, while Lionel Richie and his wife, Brenda Harvey, were going through a rough patch,

she caught Lionel with another woman. She started beating the hell out of him, and ended up

being arrested for spousal abuse.

ArkanoidDeveloped by Taito in 1986, Arkanoid is based on Atari’s Breakout game from the 1970’s. Like Breakout the player controls a space vessel at the bottom of the screen whose job it is to bounce a ball against a multi-coloured wall of bricks causing them to disappear. If you made it to round 33 you take on the “Boss” who you must defeat to win the game.
