- “I feel it is important: if one relies merely on the ideas and efforts of others, there is no way they can get far, if even get anywhere at all. Being original, innovative and hard-working is vital in any society, as developed societies are built upon success stories and not the contrary”

- “Yes its one of the most important thing” - “I think it's important so that you can do what you want to do in life and be self-motivated” - “Yes, you have to be able to teamwork, see issues from many perspectives, think global and

act local, gaining multiple relationships - long-lasting and being able to engage in projects in a professional, trustworthy way”

- “Its important if you aim to work in business areas where you are developing a business or product”

- “There are many other skills and qualities that make for a successful life, but I do count being enterprising as an important factor. I won't say it is the most important - integrity, a work-life balance, being able to work as part of a team and good people skills are probably more important”

- “I think it is important if you want to achieve things and reach goals in your life. It's important because without being enterprising you will lack the skills to use what you have to go further.”

- “Yes, the best thing about it is that you learn to behave and conduct in a society, with different types of people with different backgrounds and different attitudes, which is very important to live a good life”

- “Yes as it shows people that you can make things happen” - “Yes I think to be able to enterprise is successful in life because it reflects the ability to create

and to control one common thing” - “Yes, to a certain extent it is. Life may bring many challenges, e.g. being let off due the

economy, but if someone is able to pick themselves up and start something new e.g. job hunt or even set up your own business by identifying your skills, then they can make the most of every situation and be energetic about it”

- “Yes it is. Success is about trying new things and investing as well as taking risks while doing undertaking new projects”

- “It is important for people who want to learn, change, problem solve etc. I can imagine that people who want a comfortable, unchanging routine might successfully accomplish the sort of life they'd enjoy without having a huge place for enterprise”

- “Yes, it is crucial to go on in the life, to fight the difficulties and to succeed projects” - “Personally I do, however if everyone was enterprising then it would not work. It depends on

what individuals call success, for some successful will be supporting themselves and their family which they may be able to achieve doing a job which others regard as 'unsuccessful'. Being enterprising is important in all situations and careers in my opinion”

- “Being enterprising can lead to success, though involved in such an attitude is a certain amount of risk, which needs to be accepted and weathered in order to ensure success. Those who are enterprising and successful are also stubborn, coming across as having unwavering self-belief. They also know how to calculate risk to make sure a loss won't destroy them”

- “Being enterprising doesn't not guarantee a ticket to success but does play an essential role. Being too enterprising may have negative effects in terms of success. It is important however as it sets a starting point to achieving the goal of success and may present several path along the way!”

- “It is important for being successful in life. This is because you really only ever see really enterprising people succeed. Obviously, there are the top venture capitalists that you see on Dragon's Den etc, but the more enterprising people within bigger companies will usually be the people who are promoted faster due to their enterprising nature. You always see the older people in companies who stay in the same position in a firm and never get offered promotions - and I believe 100% that this is due to a lack of an enterprising nature”

- “You don't need to be enterprising to be successful. You need to be persistent and motivated to be successful. Being enterprising however can help to draw attention to what you do”

- “Maybe” - “It depends on situations, sometime it may be essential and sometime not. But it is good that

we practice it often so when it is required we are able to tap into the enterprising mode easily without any risk”

- “It is only if you want to make a difference” - “Not vital but can help. If your not very good at enterprising its not the worst. But if your good

it can help you be successful” - “It depends what 'successful in life' means. I think some people who are enterprising are very

'successful', but those enterprising natures who appear to fail could be called successful in terms of having had a go at something and not allowing themselves to be limited by low expectations. However, many very successful people are not necessarily enterprising, they're just very good at what they do”

- “Probably” - “Probably wouldn’t get very far in life if you didn’t try anything new. Such as starting a new

challenge” - “Sometimes, when branching into a developing field or when trying to create a new stance on

something, it is imperative. However, when doing everyday tasks or in a more classical field, it is more important to be as specialised as possible i.e. specialisation is more important than entrepreneurship”

- “I think it can be useful, but it is not necessarily the only route to success” - “I don’t think it is essential for all types of success. However it can boost your success as

being enterprising, in its very nature, sets you apart from the ordinary” - “I don't think it is a priority for everyone and anyone. It depends on one's personality. There

are leaders and there are followers. I think it is important for leaders but not so much for followers”

- “I don’t think it is necessarily hugely important as some people can succeed to a very high level in areas of business where it is not an essential quality”

No Responses collected: - “Not necessarily, but it does help to be able to think outside the box sometimes when solving

problems and making decisions” - “No” - “No success in life is gaining a job having somewhere to live for me” - “No” - “No” - “No because life is not like enterprises” - “No. I think there are other ways of finding success. It should not only be defined by how well

you do in the business world” - “No not at all- friends, happiness, and lots of other things are more important” - “No. it depends on how you define success for you - for me it is to be happy, healthy, with

good relationships and enjoy work. I associate enterprising more with business and being a business leader/innovator which is something I am not really interested in”

- “Not necessarily, it depends on the person” - “No, not really, I think its important if you want to make a lot of money, but some people have

to do the other work” - “Not essential”

- “Define success” - “No” - “No, but it can bring success, i.e. if you can set up your own business. But you can also be

successful through getting a normal job and working your way up that way” - “No, I can be successful in my life without being an enterpriser” - “No. some of the most ‘successful’ lives are those which are simple and contented. However,

some personalities rely on enterprise to feel success” - “No” - “No comment” - “Not really, but some must be” - “No as if you enjoy what you do you can also be successful. Those that are enterprising

usually love what they do and are successful in that area” - “No” - “No”

6. Please give some examples of the opportunities you have for being enterprising in your course

Themes Responses Part of course 116 Outside of course 36 None 14

Skipped question 37

Part of the course e.g. coursework, placement, exams, research/project work This theme includes all responses which relate to the core aspects of the course for example placement and group work. Responses collected: - “Designing own PowerPoint slides” - “An example is to turnaround a research solution to something can be used commercial in the

industry” - “More time spent on design and feasibility projects. Meeting people who have achieved

something exciting or interesting during their career to gain inspiration and find out how they realistically achieved their success”

- “Composing module- You can compose anything, with anything” - “Coursework, exams” - “A paper is produced with an algorithm applying on ITS” - “Make good use of the feedback forms to improve the ways of teaching or learning” - “Dare to challenge the old theory’s” - “Do a creative coursework organize a successful group meeting etc” - “As I am a PhD student being enterprising plays quite a big role in my studies. To a certain

extent you need to be enterprising to undertake a PhD in the first place and when you embark on your PhD career hard work, initiative, originality and creativity are all very important - all qualities that relate to being enterprising. You also need a certain element of being financially enterprising to keep your head above water!”

- “Next term we will have lectures in marketing, economy, dance politics etc about how to start your own dance company/school etc”

- “Development of projects in labs and research projects” - “We have a lot of networking opportunities where law firms come in to give a talk and then

stay for drinks afterwards. We are constantly being offered opportunities to do work experience or research. I have an idea currently for a student run law advice centre. This has been piloted in another university and I plan to discuss it with our course director soon. He is enthusiastic and open to new suggestions”

- “As part of my course we work in the NHS which is screaming out for enterprising ideas and better use of resources. The course itself is very structured and there is little room for negotiation as there is so much to cram into the 3 years. However, our programme director is very open to new ideas and is able to take them on board and encourages us to think outside of the box”

- “When on placements, showing your initiative” - “Doing my own research and using my own motivation to do this” - “I’m on a PhD programme so my success totally depends on me being enterprising!

Examples: coming with research ideas, choosing the right methodology to research topic” - “Conducting new research into areas that you believe need more thought”

22/05/2009

- “You learn specific market structure and the theory helps you to think like an entrepreneur” - “Learning new skills to retain information and reading efficiently to succeed in my course” - “In the designing and making of scale bridges and roof sections. We had a coursework

assignment to tender for a contract” - “The final-year research project on the chemistry degree allows exploration of scientific

space, with the breadth and quality of the results reflecting the amount of time put in” - “Opportunities to research areas and publish” - “As my course is research based, to make yourself known to the industry you have to be

enterprising in your approach to certain projects such as looking at them in a new way or achieving some different aim or end product from the research”

- “Entrepreneurship module final year. Any group work lends itself well. Being given opportunities such as presenting to the entire second year regarding placement year. The opportunities are there but they are not integrated into the course enough. There are many ways of avoiding doing certain things, such as presenting. Really this should be a core skill from a graduate”

- “Expressing new ideas in essays from our own opinions” - “Our supervisor always force us to talk in the meeting” - “In group presentation-based work you generally need someone to take charge and keep

things moving, and in respect of the third year being a year abroad you need to be capable of finding a placement for that year and then be able to fulfil it”

- “Placement year allows us to be enterprising” - “Coming up with new takes on old experiments” - “We are often given group projects which are quite open to making them what we want” - “Preparing a business plan involving the theoretical creation of a business” - “DME work allows for enterprising thoughts on real world problems” - “One of my courses is Entrepreneurial Business Development and we are actively

encouraged to create a business plan and form a business” - “When I have to give the coursework and I am not sure about it, I have to take a decision

what I want to do. But I think that is better to give it at that time because I did what I could do so there is no point not to give it”

- “Presentations, interviews, surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, seminars workshops!” - “I guess there is nothing stopping you from writing papers” - “I’m a composer, so every coursework I do in that department can be used in competitions or

public shows in order to show off my abilities” - “Finding our own research to include in essays” - “Doing our own research in groups, and going out and finding participants” - “Work placement: under took several different trainings of analytical techniques when I could

have focused more on a single technique, travelled to different sites to work with what resources were available, economised on resources used such as analytical standards and time devoted to certain projects. Course: choosing modules effective to where I knew I could be most productive in terms of time, work load and general understanding of the topics”

- “Encouraged to come up with new ideas and to challenge literature” - “Setting up water/sanitation projects” - “Getting work experience in the private industry” - “Innovative designs in water or sanitation projects” - “I actually do a course called "Entrepreneurship" that does give you the opportunity to be

fairly enterprising, although in reality it is probably only slightly more enterprising than Business Management. I am in my final year, and one of my modules is a group project where we create a business idea, write a business plan and present it to a real life venture capitalist, who will invest real money in the winning idea if he likes it - It doesn't get much more enterprising than that at university really!”

- “Process of finding a placement” 32

Drug discovery for NADPH oxidises” - “Giving presentations, having debates” - “In our third year we have the option of a dissertation, this involves doing your own research

on a particular topic you are interested in. To do this efficiently, it helps if you are enterprising enough to find relevant sources quickly and take what you need from them”

- “Placement year” - “Projects” - “Through a group assignment last semester in the Service Operations Management module,

where we had to analyze a railway station and propose ways for its improvement in attracting and maintaining customers”

- “Any coursework which is not simply a yes or no answer - ie. anything where we have to use our own initiative to research a topic, use our own initiative to draw conclusions and above all stand above everyone else. Third Year Placement. Everyday - uni life is not spoon fed knowledge, you have to work for the knowledge and its much more respected and exciting when you do”

- “Projects while out on work experience” - “In the coursework for our health promotion module we have to plan a health campaign

including target audience, strategies and materials” - “Studying Biochemistry there are opportunities in write ups and through coursework to be

enterprising through introducing differing arguments form many sources on one topic. Through looking at other peoples interpretations and beliefs it helps to give you you're own, whether it may be a completely new perspective that uses elements of the others or one that completely agrees with one source, you have been able to gain your own understanding and will then be able to use this in the future to discuss elements with much confidence”

to offer a theme and menu that people would choose over competitors (other groups). We chose a Moroccan themed menu, to great success. In our second year we had to come up with an idea for an event that we had to run at the University. We decided to run a fun casino,

So this freedom enhances the creativity/ calculative rationality skills which can help a lot”

- “Offer incentives for start up businesses. Offer placements which focus on how to start an enterprising business and overall general advice about how this can be accomplished”

- “Perhaps having entrepreneurial days or competitions where people could take part in a kind of market, make things or sell things, even if profits go to charity, it would make a fun opportunity for students to understand the idea behind selling something and seeing the process that goes on behind this”

- “More on-campus accommodation; the waiting list for final year accommodation on campus is ridiculous, and the rent and commute time of the private accommodation I found means I can't spend much time on campus in the evenings and I can't spend much on anything”

- “Give the students more opportunities to publicly prove their enterprising skills” - “Provide platform for students to try small scale enterprising activities that will give students

'real' confidence to deal with it” - “I think apprentice style challenges help and shoudl be advertised more. I think more

encouragement for students wanting to set up their own business, there is help but knowing where to get it, who to speak to is slightly daunting. (perhaps I should be more enterprising). Incorporate more presentations, challenges and other activities into modules, the workplace is at least as much about attitude and I feel this is where the university lacks. Through tasks people can realise their strengths and weaknesses and at least be aware of them”

- “Competitions that are real life related to starting business, incorporate it more into the modules”

- “Arrange a lot of kind activity” - “It could input it into every subject area” - “I don't know. Actively encourage every week in lecturers, regardless of the course.” - “I think there are quite a few students who are unsure as to what path to take when they finish

university so perhaps more seminars or workshops to find out what area students can go into to see what grabs their eye. The current seminars are good but people tend not to go if they do not know it is what they want to do later (since with all the work final year is, it is best not to waste time on other things that may not be helpful)”

- “UniS can be more proactive in finding opportunities for students (especially for student wants to go on exchange) and if they have the opportunities, try to promote it as much as they can”

- “Give some, offer any. Generally provide some” - “I honestly don't think it could be doing much more... perhaps some labs / lectures on how the

internet can help start-up businesses?” - “Better relationship between students and staff. Organize more competitions. Be more calm

with students. More unstressed program” - “More university-wide shows of achievement - whether it be in music, science, maths or

management, this would give those students who care about their subjects a way to share their enthusiasm”

- “Spread its focus to other subjects such as physical sciences and maths rather than the more traditional social sciences”

- “Could be more wide spread, be more encouraging for students to come forward. More opportunities to involve everyone”

- “Offering opportunities for students to get practical experience in carrying out projects in their subject. Learning to be enterprising by experience is the best way”

- “Providing even more opportunities for students to plan and run events” - “Electronic submission of assignments. Encourage distance learning, International

exchanges. Raise awareness for enterprising societies (DAVE + SIFE)” - “More campus-wide competitions of creativity, such as the SPLASH photography competition

that happened recently” - “More enterprising events, possible aid and meetings with entrepreneurs that started of like

us” - “Expand on the Young Enterprise idea, and possibly branch out with the newspaper” - “Provide more support in the actual courses...especially in the School of Management” - “Running a competition?”

- “Create practical opportunities that include an element of risk and to then be recognised explicitly for these achievements”

- “Develop more schemes and opportunities to run small business and ideas” - “Take time to listen to new ideas. advertise existing successful teams better” - “Allowing more cross-flow between courses. Offer & encourage students to take electives” - “They could engage the potential students privately and guide them in telling their view and

how students can improve and become more thinkers and doers” - “Make the Student's Union hold some enterprising events - I'd actually quite like to see the

Union do something like this, as I believe they waste almost every opportunity that is thrown at them. Seriously, what has the Student's Union achieved in the past 6 months?”

- “Provide more interactive lectures, presentations” - “Give practical support, e.g. room bookings, IT, parking, access to materials etc. Give

psychological support, e.g. have faith, be positive, allow people to have a go, encourage, be enterprising itself !, award prizes, give praise. Join in, link student enterprises to University activities, ask students to help solve problems for the University”

- “The University does not seem to reach out to its students often for new ideas or assistance in developing new aspects of student life. They should try asking the students what they want and allowing them to take a bigger role in their academic experience”

- “Tricky.....lots of different support perhaps needed. Need a good team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic people to help guide students. Students need to know where to go for good advice and feel comfortable to do so - need an accessible type of support”

- “Make sure they know what students want, listen” - “Have an obvious place to go for help. Give lots of opportunities and choices, allow places for

new inventive thinking” - “Offer like a dragons den type thing and then have schemes where students can do as they

wish with the help of uni” - “Making it well known what opportunities there are to show enterprising qualities” - “Provide broader and more numerous opportunities to take part in work and studies outside of

our main remits as students of a particular discipline” - “Maybe a club or society where people share ideas and set up initiatives” - “I'm not sure if people have much time after their course to take on other enterprising

projects” Does enough already

Responses collected: - “I think it already does enough” - “I think it does a lot already, for people on ETITB courses and students who want to launch

companies” - “I think its doing a good job as is” - “I honestly don’t think it could be doing much more…. Perhaps some labs/lectures on how the

internet can help start-up businesses?” - “I think the support is there if you want it” - “I don’t think it needs to” - “I don't honestly think it could - I have seen leaflets around and there are lost of societies that

support enterprising students - I haven't particularly looked into it as I have said previously, so it would be unfair to comment on what to improve when I don't fully know what infrastructure is already there”

- “I think it already has quite a lot of support” - “I think they are good already” - “I don’t know, from what I gathered from earlier in the questionnaire it already does a lot”
