The recent emergence of cloud computing as a paradigm for economic development opens opportunities for African countries seeking to engage world markets, despite lacking the traditional infrastructure used to facilitate trade, especially since the arrival of several submarine cables along the continental coastline has accelerated the rollout of African terrestrial and wireless networks. Cloud offers a unique opportunity to African Telcos to provide value added services like voice, video and collaboration on cloud platforms. Informa Telecoms & Media has predicted that revenues from mobile data will have grown from $210bn in 2009 to more than $450bn by 2015. As Telcos design their cloud strategy, they must think on how best to leverage their unique and trusted relationship with the consumer. They can monetise this relationship by offering competitive cloud-based services integrated in the devices supported by hassle free billing and reliable network connectivity.

Noticeably, telecom operators are making a land grab for physical assets in order to sell virtual goods. Acquisitions and investments totaling almost US$8 billion were executed in the first six months of 2011, according to Informa’s Telecom Cloud Monitor. Of these, 80% involved the acquisition or planned construction of data centers to house virtualization infrastructure. However, it is important to note that telecom operators are highly dependent on third parties for cloud service delivery. This includes SaaS, infrastructure and professional services vendors. On average, an operator works with 16 partners to deliver cloud services, and some with double that number.Clearly the Cloud ecosystem in Africa, other emerging markets, and globally, will see continued activity and progress in the near future.
