A Day in the life

• Wake up, check smart-phone to review schedule for the day ahead.

• 1st meeting is late AM. So log in from home – RAP at 7am.• Use Instant Messenger (MS OCS) to check details of a report

with the author as I can see via presence in SharePoint that he is available (He’s working from home too).

• Print document to read on train. Sometimes paper is still best!

• Travel in, read document for meeting, chill, kill off some email backlog.

• Arrive at HQ, smart card entry, cashless vending for coffee and bacon butty...

A Day in the life• Go to any free desk. Phone fires up PC, log onto PC &

phone is auto-logged on. My environment is quickly and seamlessly delivered to the PC.

• I take a confidential call in open plan office, then transfer it to a wireless IP phone (over the ubiquitous WiFi network) and go to meeting room.

• Grab a pool laptop for a meeting & sign in over wireless, forgot working doc, so “follow me” print to pick up from nearest printer. Decide to use network connected plasma screen instead & allow document to be auto-deleted from queue at end of day.

• Share video of latest corporate message with team. • Head off early with 3G connected laptop on train to see

daughter play football. Eat, relax, put kids to bed. Check mail one last time and off to bed, happy that I am up-to-date.

So is this it?

• No, the current set-up is a great step forward for Newham, but just the start of a 3 year plan of infrastructure improvements.

Green Newham DocksideSpecifically designed to lower our carbon footprint

• Lighting: Energy efficient lighting, programmed to switch off after 15 minutes if no movement is detected in an area.• Recycling Waste: No bins under desks and recycling bins positioned centrally for each team. You can put all recyclable material into these bins with no need to sort material.• No water dispensers: Cool filtered water taps are provided in all kitchen areas for filling water bottles and cups.• Hot desking: reduces the number of desks and space the council needs. Not only does this save the council money but it also reduces the amount of energy used to heat, light and power equipment for desks that aren't needed.• Green Travel: Increased cycling provision means that more members of staff can cycle to work comfortably. Cycle racks, lockers, showers and drying rooms makes ditching the car easy. Reduced car parking and Park and Ride schemes also work to encourage staff to take public transport or cycle in. (Plus Cycle to Work Scheme).• Plus, more staff in one location means less travelling to and from meetings.
