Persistence!
Friends on the journey,
There’s nothing more persistent than an inquisitive toddler. Commonly heard in my house was “Mom,mom, mommy, mom” and questions like “What’s this? What’s that? Why? How?” Of course, thiscontinued through childhood and the teenage years just with different circumstances. As nervewracking as it sometimes was, those conversations were times of learning, sharing and growing. Nowas a mother of young adults, I often miss those younger inquisitions but cherish the more complicatedadult discussions today.
Today’s gospel is about persistency. The Canaanite women is a Gentile, a nonbeliever, and sodesperate to help her tormented daughter that she’s willing to beg over and over again for this Jewishman’s help. The disciples tried to send her away and Jesus was hesitant at first. Her won’ttakenoforananswer approach finally wins and Jesus honors her persistency by curing her daughter.
God’s like that with us, wanting us to be as persistent in our faith just like that inquisitive child andCanaanite woman. Our loving Lord wants nothing more than for us to have faith and trust in hisunwavering care. God never tires of our prayers and wants to hear from us regularly, consistently, formundane requests, life changing petitions for ourselves and others, gratitude, praise, and just everyday conversation.
Our faith always invokes a God response and our prayers are never unanswered, though we don’talways get what we want. How often have we asked God for something, didn’t get our way and thengave up, thinking God is punishing us or doesn’t care? That’s where persistent faith comes in. Faith iswhat guides us to search for God’s message in any situation, difficult or otherwise. Faith is what helpsmakes sense of the unexplainable in our lives and in the world. Faith is what allows us to the see lightin the darkness. Faith is what inspires us to find something or someone for which to be grateful. Faithis what helps us to see God at work in our daily lives through creation, people and events. Persistentfaith is trusting and surrendering our will to God’s. Easier said than done, I know. But our faithjourney is a lifelong marathon, not a sprint, ever changing, always evolving and only abundant withpersistence.
May we always be like that inquisitive toddler, daily saying “God, God, Lord, Jesus. Where are you?Help me see you today. Thank you. I know that was you.”
Siempre adelante,
Teresa RunyonFaith Life Minister

Spark! at home ~ The Canaanite woman in today’s Gospel, askedJesus to heal her daughter. She believed he would heal her, all hertrust and faith was in him. Even though it seemed that Jesus was nothearing her request, she did not give up. This week as you pray foryour needs, do it with great faith and trust that Jesus will answeryour prayers.
Three:Sixteen at home ~ Think of one of your greataccomplishments. What did it require of you to make it happen?Persistence, confidence, hard work and faith? It can be very easy togive up at the first signs of resistance, but when we truly believe, wedo not let anything discourage us, our reward then is even sweeter. With this confidence, trust always in God as the Canaanite woman, who in everyone’s eyes, was not worthy of Jesus’ attention orblessing and healing, she did not let this stop her. Her faith and trustin Jesus as Lord was greater than anything, she was rewarded for herfaith.

In the Community
Protect the Children
Teach Kids When to Say SomethingIt is important to help children understand the difference betweentelling on others and sharing information that could help themselvesor someone else stay safe. Teach children about secrets that are okay(a surprise birthday party), and secrets that are never okay (don’t tellmom or dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do ifsomeone asks them to keep a bad secret. Speaking up can save a kidfrom harm or abuse. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “ToTattle or Protect” email jvienna@laarchdiocese.org.

Parish Finance Council
The finance council is an advisory group that has the essential duty of guiding the parish in the stewardship of its financialresources. They meet at least ten times a year to review our monthly operating expenses and investment and bankaccounts. Every year they review and approve the parish budget and two annual reports, one submitted to thearchdiocese and one presented to the parish. They advise on capital expenditures and projects seeking funding. Currently, realizing that our physical plant is already twenty-two years old, the council is working to assure that funding for repair orreplacement of systems such as the roof and air conditioners is available when the time comes. We owe a debt of gratitudeto the members of the Finance Council:
