Presenting binax from Siemens: clinically proven toexceed normal hearing in difficult listeningsituations

In January, Siemens Hearing Instruments UK will unveil their next generation of BestSoundTechnology, binax, which promises to take binaural hearing systems to a new level. Twoindependent clinical studies* have successfully proved that in the most challenging hearingenvironments, such as at a cocktail-party, binax wearers are able to understand speechbetter than people with normal hearing.

Thanks to an unwavering development of the e2e wireless technology pioneered bySiemens, Siemens hearing aids can now exchange audio signals with one another to deliversuperb speech clarity in noisy situations while maintaining spatial information, says thecompany. Wind noise management is again improved to ensure comfort for wearers inwindy environments. All of this takes place fully automatically, and without compromisingbattery life; all features work with exceptionally low power consumption, even the newbinaural features. For wearers, it provides a whole new binaural experience. *University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013: Speech ReceptionThresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situa-tions improved up to 2.9 dB for wearerswith mild to moderate hearing lossusing Carat binax or Pure binax hearinginstruments with narrow directionality, compared to people with normalhearing.

Visit to Myanmar – November 2014

In November last year, Professor Maung Maung Khaing, Head of the Department ofOtolaryngology at the Yangon ENT Hospital invited Bevan Allen RHAD FSHAA and DrTony Sirimanna, Consultant Audiological Physician at Great Ormond Street Hospital, togive lectures in tinnitus management and audiological medicine to residents, ENT traineesand nurses at the hospital.

These were well received, being the very first of their kind in Myanmar (Burma). Thetrip was sponsored by the Hearing Conservation Council who is also inviting Myanmar tocontinue to support the WHO in its endeavours to promote the Prevention of HearingImpairment.

For a population of 50.5 million people there are only about 175 ENT surgeons inMyanmar and there are no properly trained audiologists or speech and language thera-pists, although hearing testing is carried out by partly trained staff, including doctors.

Currently, hearing aids are not freely available for anyone diagnosed with a permanentsignificant hearing loss. If a hearing aid is necessary then it has to be found from a privatesource, the cost of which is well beyond the reach of most working Burmese people.

The ulitmate aim is to provide training for audiologists and speech and language thera-pists in Myanmar itself if appropriate funding can be sourced. For further information contact: Langley Audiology Centre,Tel: +44 (0)20 8663 6187,Email: [email protected]: www.langleyaudiology.co.uk

“It is with a mixture of emotions thatI have to advise that I am moving onfrom my position as General Manager atGN Otometrics UK. This is an excitingopportunity and one which I cannotturn down.

Another positive side to this is that, for some time, National SalesManager, Matt Murray, has been developed as my successor in the UK and itis with tremendous pleasure that I can announce that he will be taking overmy General Manager responsibilities upon my departure.

There are also exciting times ahead with even more innovations. Wepresented on, and demonstrated the upcoming ‘OTOSCAN’ digital ear scan-ning solution at BAA this year, which could hit the market later in 2015. PATH medical GmbH announces winner of ‘Trip to Germany’ prize

PATH medical GmbH has announced the winner of its competition to win a trip to Germany (all expensespaid) drawn at the EUHA congress on Friday 17 October.

The lucky winner was Serguei Silva from Porto Alegre in Brazil who entered the draw at the PATH medicalstand. Patricia Tedesco, PATH medical International Sales Manager for the Americas (pictured far left), said:“Serguei was absolutely delighted when we told him saying, what great news indeed! I am very happy! Thankyou!”

With over 350 entries competition participants were asked questions relating to the new developments inthe extensive PATH medical range including the patented FMDPOAE technology (Frequency ModulatedDistortion Product Otoacoustic Emission) a new method used to overcome the fine structure effect leading tounwanted ‘dips’ in the OAE response.

In addition participants were asked about the multi-frequency DPOAE which reduces DPOAE test durationby up to four times, achieved by presenting two pairs of DP stimulus simultaneously in both ears. ConventionalDPOAE recording only allows one pair of DP stimuli to be presented at a time, so this new development isextremely efficient, saving valuable test time. This works particularly effectively with the DPOAE threshold estimation providing a cochlearaudiogram (for further usage in hearing aid adaption) in an objective way without the need of a co-operative patient. For further information contact: Path medical, Tel: +49 (0)89 800 76 502, Web: www.pathme.de Worldwide Sales enquiries to: email [email protected]
