Ensuring the Nature Center’s Future Through Legacy Giving

Launched in 2014, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s Wise Owl Society now has more than 25 members, all of whom have included the Nature Center in their estate planning.

We asked some Wise Owls to talk with us about their connections to the Nature Center, and their reasons for including the Nature Center in their planned giving.

Laurel Butler of Mystic has been a Nature Center member since 1985, and is a past Board of Trustees member and Chair. “I believe in the mission, preserving open space and teaching about the outdoors, developing a personal environmental ethic,” she told us. “Nothing can replace the restorative, healing power of being outdoors throughout the seasons. We need to preserve and teach about our local wild places.”

Binti & John Ackley of Stonington have been members for more than 30 years, and their involvement runs the gamut from volunteering to Binti serving on the Board of Trustees and running the gift shop when it fi rst got going. Perhaps their most important connection comes through their son Jeffrey.

“Our son Jeffrey grew up at the Nature Center and absorbed it all!” they told us. “The result: He’s now a herpetologist (all those snakes, lizards and frogs). He just received his PhD in Biology from Arizona State University. Thank you DPNC!”

Actually, to all our Wise Owls and all our supportive members and donors, thank YOU!

Looking Ahead to the Future of Coogan and our 70th Birthday!

The Nature Center has packed the last four months of 2015 with activities for all, young and old. What you see scheduled in this is-sue of The Chickadee is just a sampling of all we are, and will be, doing!

As this issue goes to press, Summer Camp is at its mid-way point and peak attendance. The ice-cream truck is here and dozens of children are playing and laughing outside in the woods, enjoying

a perfect July day. Our summer days have seen visitors from all over the country and all over the world, browsing our museum exhibits, hiking our trails, and sharing their experiences on social media!

Renovations to the Coogan Farmhouse and Barn are well underway, and we are busily outfi tting the John E. Avery Welcome Center, kitchen, and classrooms so we can be-gin using these fabulous new spaces for programs, meetings, exhibits, workshops and more. We have an exciting vision for DPNC and how our expanded campus and facili-ties at Coogan will allow us to better serve our members and the public. It is a feeling that is hard to describe to watch every day as our vision for Coogan Farm becomes a reality.

October 2015 marks the beginning of a new fi scal year, and the Nature Center’s sev-enth decade. We will be celebrating our 70th birthday throughout 2016, beginning in January! We will celebrate what is old and what is new, our past and our future, while delivering engaging and meaningful programs that help deepen appreciation and un-derstanding of nature.

    Join us!

Farm to Table Through Time: Environmental History and Local Food Production in New England

An Avery Point Symposium, co-sponsored by DPNC

    Friday, Oct. 9 8:30am-4pm Free

“Farm to Table Through Time” seeks to put the local food movement into an his-torical context to gauge where it may be heading. The event invites regional schol-ars to explore how food production — the most mundane and quotidian of human activities — played fundamental, but often overlooked roles in past decision making. Additionally, we will ask contemporary producers and restaurateurs to explore how the dramatic interest in localizing food production may similarly shape the region’s future. The day’s discussions will be bookended by two leading environmental thinkers in New England – Richard Judd (University of Maine) and Brian Donahue (Brandeis University). Registration required; please register with Matthew McKenzie, Associate Professor of History and American Studies at [email protected]. A schedule will be posted in the Current Events listings at http://averypoint.uconn.edu. Symposium held at University of Connecticut’s Avery Point Student Center, 1084 Shennecossett Rd., Groton, CT.
