Dr. Russel Mikkelsonserves as Director of University Bands and Professor of Music and Area Head of Conducting and Ensembles at The Ohio State University, where he conducts the Wind Symphony, chairs the graduate conducting program, and oversees all aspects of the university’s band program. Under his direction, the OSU Wind Symphony has performed at the 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2013 Ohio Music Education Association Conventions, and has recorded five CD's: Rest (Naxos, 2012) Southern Harmony (Naxos 2009), Winds of Nagual (Naxos, 2007), Jubilare! (Mark Records, 2003) and Sounds, Shapes and Symbols (Mark

Records, 2000) under his direction. Director of the OSU Contemporary Music Festival and a staunch advocate for the creation of new works, Mikkelson serves on the American Bandmasters Association Commissioning Committee, and has instituted a program of regular commissioning projects at OSU.

This is Dr. Mikkelson's eleventh season with the Heisey Wind Ensemble.

Saturday, April 20, 2013 - 7:30 PMThe annual "Pops" night of the HWE season has become one of the most talked about events of our season. Movie music, American popular song, swing tunes - you never know what the audience will be treated to.

All concerts are at the Newark Campus of The Ohio State University and Central Ohio Technical College, in the John Gilbert Reese Center Alford Performing Arts Hall.

La Procession du Rocio by Joaquin Turina, Autobiography by Robert Russell Bennett and English Dances by Malcolm Arnold start things off. We are joined by the High Street Stompers for Frank Ticheli's Playing With Fire, written for Dixieland Band with Concert Band. You will not want to miss this!

Christmas is a great time of year, and as usual HWE will make your holiday season complete. In addition to our famous sing-along, you will hear The Night Before Christmas, Deck the Halls, and some wonderful vocal soloists you will not want to miss! By popular demand the concert will also include Minor Alterations by David Lovrien.

He is an educational consultant for Jupiter Instruments/KHS America, serves as a clinician for the Hal Leonard Corporation and Meredith Music Publications and was Associate Director of Bands/Visiting Associate Professor of Music at The Ohio State University.
