Former Professor of Law and UNESCO Chair for the Environment, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, he now only participates occasionally and exceptionally in congresses, seminars, workshops, conferences or professional courses.ExVisiting Lecturer, Harvard Law School, exResearcher of the United Nations University-Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS, Yokohama), Ex-Director General of Nature Conservation in Spain, Professor Alonso was head of the National Fish & Wildlife, National Parks, National Forests, and National Marine Sanctuaries Services. He has also been Senior Of Counsel at Baker & McKenzie, and Chief Negotiator for the Spanish Government and the EU on international environmental conventions. In the area of public health, Prof Alonso is an expert on the regulation of infectious disease zoonoses and public health as well as in wildlife epidemiology. He has been member of the highest supervisory board on food safety and on biomedical research, in particular for the regulatory requirements concerning the establishment and control of biobanks, and of risk analysis methodologies for dangerous substances. He has also, as member of the commission analyzing claims asking for compensation for damage caused by drugs and /or by medical malpractice, set up the standards for informed consent of medical treatments and of clinical trials. He has actively participated in the international negotiations addressing the connections between loss of biodiversity and public health (Convention of Biological Diversity, FAO....), including GMO related risk evaluation systems (Cartagena Protocol) and the establishment of the international regime on access to genetic resources and benefit sharing (Bonn Guidelines and Nagoya Protocol). He has been member of several expert committees of the European Commission for the evaluation of life and of health sciences reserach projects applying for funding.
