Fr. Augustine Vallooran V.C. being informed in advance of Perera’s involvement in the practice of this New Age tool. International renowned Catholic preachers from India and overseas also ministered there. The email invitation from Divine Youth, the Centre’s youth ministry read, “… and Lalith Perera from Sri Lanka will be our resource persons from outside the country. Youth around the globe have saved up on their vacation and leave to be clothed with the Holy Spirit (Luke 24: 49). Teams from Europe and America, Australia and the Gulf have already confirmed their coming. Three hundred participants from Sri Lanka have already chartered a flight.”Since Fr. Augustine is a member of the National Service Team [NST] of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal [CCR], the Chairman of the NST, Mr. Cyril John, was also duly informed. Despite this, Perera was permitted to minister at this important charismatic event. The Centre’s Director was satisfied that Perera brought 400 Sri Lankans with him to attend the Youth Conference. Thirty pieces of silver? The Centre was not the only one to ‘sell out’. The information was circulated to many people who are closely associated with the Centre or have a special place for it in their hearts. These persons, who would normally respond to other reports, tactfully avoided an acknowledgement of this one, because this ministry has touched yet another sacred cow!

According to the Document, “Enneagram [from the Greek ennea= nine + gramma= sign] refers to a diagram composed of a circle with nine points on its circumference, connected within the circle by a triangle and a hexangle.It was originally used for divination, but has become known as the symbol for a system of personality typology consisting of nine standard character types. It became popular after the publication of Helen Palmer’s [1989] book The Enneagram, but she recognizes her indebtedness to the Russian esoteric thinker and practitioner G. I. Gurdjieff, the Chilean psychologist Claudio Naranjo and author Oscar Ichazo, founder of Arica. The origin of the enneagram remains shrouded in mystery, but some maintain that it comes from Sufi mysticism” [Glossary].Under the caption ‘The New Age and the Catholic Faith’, the Document explains:“On the one hand, new forms of psychological affirmation have become very popular among Catholics, even in retreat-houses, seminaries, and institutes of formation for religious. At the same time, there is increasing nostalgia and curiosity for the wisdom and ritual of long ago, which is one of the reasons for the remarkable growth in the popularity of esotericism and gnosticism…

John Paul II [in Crossing the Threshold of Hope] warns with regard to the ‘return of ancient gnostic ideas under the guise of the so-called New Age. We cannot delude ourselves that this will lead to a renewal of religion. It is only a new way of practising gnosticism- that attitude of the spirit that, in the name of a profound knowledge of God, results in distorting His Word and replacing it with purely human words… in distinct, if not declared conflict with all that is essentially Christian’. An example of this can be seen in the enneagram, the nine-type tool for character analysis, which when used as a means of spiritual growth produces an ambiguity in the doctrine and the life of the Christian faith” [n 1.4]. The Document could hardly be more explicit than that. The enneagram is New Age, has its roots in esotericism and pagan mysticism, is a modern form of gnosticism and its use as a spiritual tool is, as we shall see, a distortion of the Word of God which is the basis of all Christian faith and living. The Vatican Document provides a list of major New Age influencers that includes founder Ichazo, and, naming it as a ‘key New Age place’ has this to say about Esalen which played a major role in establishing the popularity of the enneagram: “A community founded in Big Sur, California in 1962 by Michael Murphy and Richard Price, whose main aim was to arrive at a self-realization of being through nudism and visions... It has become one of the most important centres of the Human Potential Movement, and has spread ideas about holistic medicine... This has been done through courses in comparative religion, mythology, mysticism, meditation, psychotherapy, expansion of consciousness and so on. Along with Findhorn, it is seen as a key place in the growth of Aquarian (New Age) consciousness." They inform me that Bro. Lalith is known for his "innovations", and they have spoken to him about Enneagrams etc. but he ignores their concerns. On 25.11.2005, I wrote to Bro. Lalith explaining to him the New Age errors of Enneagrams, and including a hardcopy of my write-up on The Enneagram. I suggested to him that he may be unaware of the occult/esoteric background of the enneagram personality typing, suggested he read the Vatican Provisional Report on the New Age [of February 3, 2003] and requested him to discontinue giving such retreats. Regrettably, Bro. Lalith neither responded nor terminated his Enneagram programmes.Bro. Perera's last major retreat for people in the Sri Lankan Charismatic Renewal was attended by 2,000 people according to Duthika Perera, Lalith Perera's son whom I spoke to on the telephone [00 94 11 2716489]. According to Duthika Perera, Bro. Lalith has given Enneagram seminars for several NGOs in Sri Lanka, like LAWYERS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, etc., the latest being one for an NGO named SAVE THE CHILDREN, as recently as a week ago. You will agree with me that it is a matter of great regret that the leading Sri Lankan charismatic preacher, who is bringing a large group of people for the programme at your Divine Retreat Centre at the end of this month, is not only not giving his full contribution to Catholic ministry, but has also exposed thousands of people already to a practice that has been condemned in a Vatican Document. Meeting him personally is out of question as he is extremely short

Using and teaching ENNEAGRAMS is not the only issue with Lalith Perera. Despite being recognized as a resource person for Catholic ministry, he is an astute businessman. His website gives details of the many courses he has done to qualify himself in ‘programmes to change peoples lives’- different types of psychological counseling*, “'right living' way of life that guarantees peace of mind”, “transformational living”, “dealing with one’s weaknesses”, etc. How is a person who finds little use for Biblical counseling and the charisms of the Holy Spirit so popular in charismatic circles in Sri Lanka and even in India? Lalith Perera continues to be minister at Divine Retreat Centre year after year, bringing along with him large numbers of Sri Lankans for the international youth programmes*see my separate articles on the great spiritual dangers in psychological counseling, much of which is New Age. Lalith teaches Enneagrams. One or two persons have denied that fact or claimed [falsely] that he stopped before coming to India. Still one or two others - who were aware of the warnings in the said Document] - felt that it was not a big issue.4. I would have expected that some of the concerned people would have appreciated- instead of condemning- me for my alertness and my burden for the Church. Fr. Augustine, in February of 1995, confirmed my ministry with Jeremiah 1: 4, 5 when I met him as an unknown person for the very first time. He confirmed it to me at subsequent meetings.Mr. Cyril John has met with me on two occasions since 2003, once in Mumbai, and earlier in Vijayawada. Both the times, he has publicly [in the presence of other senior leaders of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal] stated- among other things- that my ministry needs to be encouraged at the national level and that any of my material does not need to be checked or verified because it is authentically Catholic.I trust that nothing has changed since then, except the increase in compromise and the unwillingness of more leaders to hear the truth when error is discovered among their associates and in their own organisations.5. If you believe that my ministry is "critcizing and finding fault", maybe you would like to see the thousands of supportive letters that I have received since 2003 alone from CBCI Commissions, Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops, superiors of religious orders, priests and seminarians and lay leaders in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal [including members of the ICCRS] from all over the world, and most major retreat centres and ministries in India. You might also like to read the Acts of the Apostles where the disciples of Jesus Christ not only propagated the Gospel, but also defended the Church from error. Peter and Paul also identified by name those in the early Church who would lead Christians astray by deceitful teachings and practices.

A number of persons in recognized charismatic ministry and leadership from all over the world wrote to Fr. Augustine, whom they and I deeply respect, under copy to me. Were they too "critcizing and finding fault"?6. Bro. Lalith Perera must abjure the practice and propagation of Enneagrams, if he is to be recognized as Catholic [because currently he is in defiance of Church teaching], leave alone the leader of a huge charismatic ministry, and he must also undo the damage done to thousands of lay Catholics in Sri Lanka through his Enneagram seminars by admitting his error and reading them the truth from the Vatican Document, or from Fr. Mitch Pacwa SJ's book "Catholics and the New Age", chapters "Tell Me Who I Am, O Enneagram" and "Occult Roots of the Enneagram". Fr. Mitch was in the New Age and in practice and teaching of Enneagrams, and was Christian enough to publicly confess his error and make amends for it by writing the book, and several others like it. In the book, he NAMES those involved in promoting Enneagrams, including eminent priests. So does one of the co-founders of the Renewal, prophet and author of many books on errors within the Church.Are Bro. Lalith and the others connected with this episode Christian and humble enough to emulate Fr. Mitch?

Those who defend Bro. Lalith, or who remain silent and non-committal, share the guiltiness of Bro. Lalith.7. You pray that I will "experience the Love of God" but do not want me to reply, meaning that you have closed the door on me. Is that what Bro. Lalith has taught you through his prayer meetings and Enneagram retreats?I do not give up on anyone, brother Paul John. Lalith can become a leading warrior to preach the error of Enneagrams, and he may be invited by the National Service Team and by Divine Retreat Centre to give his testimony like Fr. Mitch Pacwa is now doing.I, too, pray with you, that Lalith may be covered and protected by the Blood of Jesus. I do not wish to see the name of anyone maligned, or the soul of anyone lost, through the unnecessary propagation of New Age error along with charismatic ministry. Bro. Lalith is not alone. So there is nothing wrong in criticizing the Heretics, even if they are Bishops or Cardinals. The Papal Preacher says to raise your voice against the scars of the Church:-There is the risk that someone might do exactly what Saint-Exupery is condemning here. It would be the case of someone leaving the Church and then going from university to university, from newspaper to newspaper, from congress to congress, giving voice to his bitter accusations against the 'institutional' Church, as if this were a completely different thing to his ideal of the Church, thinking he can save his own honour by presenting the Church in a bad light. We know that the world thinks wonders of those who leave the Church. Speaking of those who abandon the Church for some heretical sect which immediately confers honour and rank on them, Tertullian said, ' How easy promotion is when you pass over to the enemy's side!' (Against Heretics, 41, 9). It is often the case that one hides one's total loss of faith behind a thick cloud of accusations against the Church. Should everyone always keep silent then in the Church? No. Once  you have 'returned home', once you have wept for the Church, once you have humbled yourself beneath her feet, God may command you, as he did with others in the past, to raise your voice against the 'scars of the Church'. But not before then, and not without this risky mission causing you some form of death. The saints have applied to the Church what Job said to God: 'Should he kill me, I will continue hoping in him'(Job 13:15 - Vulgate Translation) [The Power of the Cross by Fr.
