years, the Foundation has provided approximately $1,080,500 in grant funds for hundreds of special proj-ects. Gordon Binek, vice president for college ad-vancement and federal rela-tions, said the

Foundation Programs Committee examines each grant application to make certain the proposals will enhance learning.

“We make good use of the dollars available and make sure that each grant will have an impact on the college,” Binek said.

The most recent projects funded included conference fees for students and faculty, equipment, and assistance in sponsoring cam-pus events, such as ChoirFest, Campus Read, Visiting Writers Series, and a “World Year of Physics” series.

One grant for $2,125 went to the visual arts program for a new raku kiln. Brian Hushagen, assistant professor of art, said the new kiln allows him to conduct raku firings throughout the year.

“What normally was a once or twice a year event has become a regular part of our firing routine,” Hushagen said. “This addition to our outdoor kiln facility was like a night and day difference in terms of improved safety

and efficiency over our previous raku set-ups.”

The computer science program and two students benefited from a grant of $230 that covered student fees for the Midwest Instruc-tional and Computing Symposium at Uni-versity of Minnesota, Morris. Karen Arlien, assistant professor of computer science, said being at the symposium gave her the chance to network with faculty from several poten-tial transfer schools.

“The presentations gave students a great introduction to a wide variety of computer science topics and specialities,” Arlien said.

“One student was so intrigued with a ses-sion on artificial intelligence and robotics that he purchased a robotics kit, and using skills learned in his computer science classes, modified the software that controls his ro-bot,” she said.

A grant for $4,500 helped spark enthusi-asm among students of all ages for chemistry, math and physics. Professor of chemistry Frank Koch and associate professor of phys-ics Jeff Collier requested the grant to help bring an internationally renowned group of physicists to BSC from the University of Minnesota. The scientists present physics demonstrations called “The Physics Circus.” Two performances in the BSC Armory al-lowed many school students and the public to attend.

Koch said with the aid of BSC Foundation grants, BSC students have been exposed to a variety of scientists, such as the inventor of Post-It Notes, the senior scientist for the Space Station, and experts on laser applica-tion, super critical fluid, and future energy needs.

“These grants also helped the BSC chemis-try program receive four National Chemistry Week Awards,” Koch said.

Joyce Schuchart of Bismarck has estab-lished a scholarship in the name of her late husband, John “Jack” Schuchart, former CEO and president of the board of MDU Resources Group Inc.

The annual $1,000 scholarship, estab-lished with the BSC Foundation last spring, will be presented to an outstanding student in an energy program. Mr. Schuchart died March 27, 2001, at age 71, three months after his retirement.

Half of Schuchart’s 50-year career was

spent at MDU Resources, guiding the com-pany through an unprecedented period of change. Founded as Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., the enterprise grew from a state-regulat-ed gas and electric provider serving custom-ers in five states to a diversified corporation

Schuchart scholarship establishedof six businesses, more than 6,000 employ-ees, revenues over $1 billion, and operations in half the U.S.

Schuchart’s employees knew him as a dedicated, professional, and energetic man-ager, who enjoyed people and developing their potential. He established the Chairman’s Conference, a mentoring program to train high-potential employees for future leader-ship positions.

“My husband loved his job and going to work,” Joyce says. They were married 50 years and have two daughters, three grand-children, and a great-grandchild.

Schuchart said in an interview in The Resource, MDU Resources’ magazine, that he was most proud of his marriage to Joyce. Three honors also meant a lot to him: CEO of the Year bronze award from Financial World magazine, Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of Nebraska, where he earned his undergraduate degree, and Alum-nus Achievement Award from the university’s Alumni Association.

Jaclyn Bugbee joined the BSC Foundation staff during the summer as fund development

coordinator. Originally from Parshall, she is a graduate of North Dakota State Univer-sity with a bachelor of science degree in accounting.

She is enjoying her work to help make a difference for students through expanded funds for scholarships.

“We’re working with area businesses to develop more special-ized scholarships for students in technical programs,” Bugbee said. “We’re also hop-ing to continue increasing the number and diversity of scholarships awarded to BSC students.”

She was previously employed as assistant controller at Beverage Wholesalers, Fargo, for one and one-half years. A job transfer for her husband, Darin Bugbee, brought the couple to Bismarck.

Constellation Power Generation, a subsid-iary of Constellation Energy Group Inc., gave BSC a thumbs-up in its newsletter CPGCon-nections. A story in the September issue features BSC Power Plant Technology Online program graduates, who say their training deserves an “A.” CPG began a partnership with BSC four years ago. The company uses BSC as a source for core power plant opera-tor skills and recommends enrollment to new operators and as paid tuition incentive to all employees.

“Having people in the industry vouch for us is a feather in our cap and shows that what we’re doing is worthwhile and beneficial to the industry,” says Dan Schmidt, BSC En-

ergy Technology Online program manager/instructor.

The story listed 11 company employees with either AAS degrees or diplomas from BSC. The partnership began after training instructor Darren Marvin visited the campus and went through the program.

CPG is a subsidiary of Constellation Ener-gy Group Inc, a Fortune 500 company based in Baltimore. It operates 35 power plants in 12 states and deals in power generation, competitive energy supply, energy delivery, and energy consulting and services. More information is available at www.constella-tion.com.

This has been a remarkable year for the Bismarck State College Foundation. We have

reached several major milestones during this year. For the first time our revenue exceeded $5

million in one year. Our total assets are now over $15 million. Total grants from the Foun-

dation to BSC since 1983 passed the $1,000,000 mark and our scholarships awarded since

1980 are nearly $1,700,000. We awarded over 250 scholarships worth $175,000 to students

during the 2003-04 school year. We also funded over $250,000 in grants to BSC for worthy

projects. The $10 million capital campaign to construct the Career and Technology Institute contin-

ues to be a major focus for the Foundation. The campaign has been resoundingly successful.

Our total commitments for the campaign now exceed $7 million dollars, thanks in large part

to strong participation from the energy industry. Our Foundation Board of Trustees and BSC

employees have made outstanding commitments of support for this project. The entire com-

munity has really gotten involved in the campaign and has generously supported the project.

By this time next year we will see the Career and Technology Institute starting to take shape.

This year, we have had many generous individual gifts that increased the Foundation

endowment. Two of those gifts deserve special recognition - a bequest of over $550,000 and

a charitable trust of over $640,000. Both gifts will result in an increase in scholarships. We

are honored to be the recipient of these gifts and appreciate the support of so many generous

donors. Your generous support means that we can offer the gift of education to many additional

students at BSC. It is exciting to think about the impact scholarships will have on genera-

tions of BSC students. As the decades pass we will have helped thousands of students gain

the benefit of education, which is truly a lifetime resource.

Thank you for all you do for the Bismarck State College Foundation. Your generosity is

so important. Thanks to you we are making a difference every day for BSC and all of the

students we serve.

Defibrillators installedin three campus buildings

BSC has three automatic external defibril-lators (AEDs) installed in three buildings. An AED is a small, lightweight device used to assess a person’s heart rhythm. If necessary, it administers an electric shock to restore a normal rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

Two were purchased with funds from the Learning First Managing Excellence Team, and the third was purchased by the Board of Governors.

The AEDs are located in the Student Union, next to the wall phone in the lobby; in Jack Science Center, next to the stairwell on the main floor; and in Schafer Hall, next to the Financial Aid Office at the north end of first floor.

Nearly 20 employees, including several custodians, are trained in CPR and in the use of the AEDS.

Employees honored for excellenceBSC honored five employees with Awards

for Excellence for professional achievement at the spring recognition ceremony.

Faculty recipients were Daniel Leingang, assistant professor of mathematics, for his teaching skills and friendly rapport with students; Earl Torgerson, assistant professor

of carpentry, for his design skills, vision, and public recognition of BSC’s carpentry pro-gram; and Mike Wardzinski, criminal justice lecturer, for his tireless efforts to provide superior course content in his campus and online classes.

Receiving staff awards were Donna Fricke, southwest region tech prep coordi-

nator, for her dedication to her job and for promoting BSC’s career and technology programs to high school students; and Buster Gilliss, director of athletics and men’s bas-ketball coach, for the countless, long hours he dedicates to BSC’s athletes and athletic programs.

The awards, co-ordinated by the Learning First Managing Excellence Team, recognize significant and meritorious achievement in performance of professional roles at BSC. Full-time employ-ees receive a $1,000 cash gift from the BSC Foundation. Part-time employees receive a $250 cash gift.

BSC will begin offering an associate degree nursing program next fall, based on initial approval of the program in September by the N.D. Board of Nursing. BSC began offering a certificate program in practical nursing this fall.

Both programs are part of the Dakota Nursing Program, a collaborative effort of BSC, Lake Region State College, Williston State College and Minot State University-Bottineau.

BSC has offered a practical nursing pro-gram for the past few years, said Dr. Wayne Boekes, BSC provost and vice president for academic and student affairs. “We have made changes in our nursing education programs to reflect legislative changes in the education required of North Dakota nurses,” Dr. Boekes said.

“The addition of the associate degree nursing program in North Dakota offers the opportunity for BSC to assist in meeting the

registered nursing needs of North Dakota’s medical facilities,” he said.

“The program is not intended to replace the baccalaureate program, but to add another dimension in career development.”

The associate degree nursing program (re-ferred to as ADN) is part of a nursing educa-tion career ladder that begins with certified nurse assistant (CNA) training, then moves to licensed practical nursing (LPN) and then to associate degree nursing.

CNA certification is required before en-rolling in a practical nursing program, and completion of practical nursing training is required before admittance into the ADN program.

These career ladder opportunities are de-signed for students new to nursing education, as well as for place-bound, employed CNAs and LPNs.

Deadline near to nominate outstanding alumni

Graduates of BSC have found success all over the world. Many have soared in their careers, become community, state and national leaders, and furthered organizations and causes as committed volunteers.

The BSC Alumni Association board asks Connections readers to think of successful alumni they hold in high regard and nomi-nate them for the 2005 Alumni of the Year Award. The nominee must be a BSC gradu-ate, but anyone can make a nomination.

Recipients are honored in May at a dinner and at commencement. Those living outside Bismarck-Mandan receive travel and lodging assistance.

Deadline for submitting nominations is Oct. 31. An awards committee will review nominations and forward the names of final-ists to the board, which selects one or two honorees.

For nomination forms, contact Janet Decker, alumni coordinator, 701-224-5692 or 1-800-272-2586, or by e-mail at [email protected], or submit the form online at www.bismarckstate.edu/alumni.

If you live beyond North Dakota’s bor-ders and would like to be an advocate for Bismarck-Mandan’s business climate, the Bismarck-Mandan Development Associa-tion (BMDA) seeks your help. BMDA has launched an Ambassadors Program to tap into the vast network of North Dakotans who live in other states or countries. This net-work provides a formal and informal means to exchange information and business leads between BMDA and former residents.

Examples of business success stories about former residents who moved back to the state can be found at www.bmda.org/ambassador.

For details on becoming a Bismarck-Man-dan Ambassador, contact Richard Mower, VP Special Projects, BMDA, 701-222-5530, or [email protected].

Zach Deslauriers and Josh Horner, both of Bismarck and students in BSC’s electronics/telecommunications technology program, won first and second place awards, respec-tively, in postsecondary sections at the Skill-sUSA-VICA National Leadership and Skills Conference held in June in Kansas City, Mo.

Deslauriers received the first place Gold Award in the Electronics Technology Con-test. He will have the opportunity to compete for one spot on the international competition team representing all of the United States. Horner received the second place Silver Award in the Electronics Applications Con-test.

Both started their electronics education as students in the Bismarck Public Schools’ electronics program at the Bismarck Voca-tional-Technical Center. BSC instructor Dan Wahlman accompanied the students to the conference.

Both competed in categories that had repre-sentatives from all 50 states.

The contests involved one-on-one inter-view competition, written exam, and an eight-hour, hands-on skills testing. SkillsUSA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education.

BSC’s official enrollment of 3,570 students marks the 6th consecutive year of record en-rollments. The number reflects an additional 140 students, a four percent increase, over last fall’s total enrollment of 3,430.

Dr. Wayne Boekes, provost and vice presi-dent for academic and student affairs, said these record-breaking enrollments indicate BSC is providing the education and services that students want.

He said factors influencing the college’s growth are online classes, new programs, strong student services and outreach that lead to increased retention, and collaborative initiatives with other N.D. University System institutions, including the addition of bacca-laureate programs.

“Another major reason for our success is our employees who are committed to provid-ing quality instruction and services,” he said. “Without them and their commitment, BSC would not continue to grow.”

BSC has experienced record-breaking en-rollments since 1999, when enrollment was 2,743 students. Of the total enrollment this fall, 2,370 are full-time students. This is a 3.6 percent increase over last fall. The part-time number is 1,200 students.
