Words to live ByBy Dave McElheran, Chaplain

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your

ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV

As we welcome the year 2017—with its many challeng-es—it is a good time to remember that the God of the universe, the Creator of all things, does not worry about the future. He is in perfect control and is the Pilot, lead-ing us with His righteous right hand. Trust Him today; He will take care of you.

What To Do When You Are Sick By Bridget Nikolov, Health Services Director

Struggling with the flu virus or any illness is challenging at best, and downright debilitating at its worst. To help you navigate these unwelcome winter visitors, I’ve outlined steps below to assist you on your road to recovery—and to limit the virus’s exposure to other residents:

· Call the med aides and let them know your symptoms and if you need any assistance. Keep-ing track of sick residents helps us to prevent the spread of infection.

· Stay in your apartment during your illness and 48 hours after you are symptom-free. We will deliver meals to you free of charge. Even though you may feel fine, you are still a carrier of viruses for several more days.

· Drink plenty of fluids! Chamomile tea with honey for upper respiratory infection; mint tea with honey for stomach flu; Gatorade for both.

· Don’t force yourself to eat too much. The BRAT (banana, rice, applesauce, toast) diet for stom-ach flu; chicken and lots of soups for upper respiratory flu.

· Take care of your symptoms. The med aides and nurse can help you.

Here’s to a healthy and happy 2017!

A New Year and a New BeginningBy Tom Freitag, Executive Director

As we finish 2016 and settle into 2017, it’s only natural to do what millions of people around the world do: make a list of New Year’s resolutions. Since prehistoric times, when the Neanderthals vowed to take better care of their tools, we’ve been determined to live a better life in the coming year.

And doing better usually focuses on a predictable list. Year after year, with little variation, studies show the Top 5 New Year’s resolu-tions are:

1. Lose Weight 2. Get Organized 3. Spend Less, Save More4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest5. Stay Fit and Healthy.

Not surprisingly, only 8% of us who start the year with a new year’s resolution maintain it by the end of the year. This statistic causes most of us to say, “My new year’s resolution is not to have a new year’s resolution!”

I find that to be somewhat of a fatalistic approach. I think we may unconsciously set our-selves up to fail by creating lofty goals and then expecting immediate or close to immediate results. When we don’t see the results we want, we get frustrated and give up.

I am a big believer in taking baby steps and, when necessary, using the reset button. For example: If you want to lose weight, instead of having dessert at both lunch and dinner, just have it at dinner. Start cutting back from there. Most importantly, if you do have two desserts (which I would never do!), don’t beat yourself up. Just reset.

Another key element to success is to get organized, which can be overwhelming. If you start to get bogged down with discouragement, distractions or insignificant details, reset. Keep the goal in mind; do a little bit each day; and eventually you’ll reach the finish line.

I’m working on my own set of new year’s resolutions. I intend to live each day more inten-tionally; to look more outwardly than inwardly; and to have more compassion for the world around me—goals, I hope, which will enable me to make a difference in people’s lives. Will I fail along the way? Of course. That’s why I’m a big believer in reset!

Enjoy the journey and Happy New Year!

4 Murrayhill Times | January 2017

I am working with graduate students at Washington State University to write a book on Washington’s National Guard which I joined when I was 17. I am looking forward to having this project come to fruition.

Ed Park, Resident

After a lapse of two years, I intend to resume drawing and painting al-beit on a more modest scale. I have already ordered a new easel.

Frank Bergen, Resident

I want to maintain my physical level of health by continuing to exer-cise, eat well and have fun as time allows—with no procrastination!

Alice Wallace, Resident

My two goals are to organize my apartment and participate in more activities.

Ingrid Palm, Resident

I want to know more people by name, so please wear your name tag!Agnes Brauser, Resident

I hope to buy a house on some property. I want to grow a big garden and have plenty of room for my grandkids to come and play. I have five daughters, one son and six grandsons so far.

Kim Krahel, Health Services

I’d like to keep in better touch with family and friends, and to try not to feel so guilty when I leave Anna’s Place after visiting my husband, Don.

Mary Hanson, Resident

My daily prayer is to be a blessing and an encouragement to other residents and staff in 2017.

Ruben Wilson, Resident

What are you looking forward to accomplishing in2017?

Drink Up for a Healthy New YearBy Pati Kirby, LPN, Anna’s Place Nurse

Why it’s important to our healthAccurate amount is based on your weightTea and coffee don’t countExcreting toxins increasedReminders to drink up

Water is an easy and essential part of keeping healthy. It is most beneficial to our digestive system by keeping things moving. It also keeps our skin from cracking and being dry which protects us from germs.

To calculate how much you need, take your weight, divide it by 2, and that is your daily ounce goal.

For example: 140 lbs/2= 70 ounces.

People often want to count tea and coffee in the calcu-lation. Caffeine acts as a diuretic which defeats the pur-pose—making these fluids a negative, not a plus in your intake count. Reaching your daily ounce goal gives your body the “fuel” it needs to get rid of unwanted toxins. As a reminder to drink water, fill a container with your daily ounce goal and watch it go down as you drink up!

Thoughts on the New YearBy the Reigning King & Queen of Hearts Gene & Joanne Kersey

Here’s to health and happiness! A toast to the New Year!

You gave us love that we cherish and have been a beautiful addi-tion to our lives. May this new year fill your life with everything that makes you happy. We are thankful for having you for our friends. How wonderful life could be for others if they had people in their lives who care for each other like we do in our community.

A new year brings a fresh start—a new world of opportunities with many moments that will warm the heart. Each new tomorrow has the promise of being great and truly beautiful. We hope all yours are fantastic.

Wonderful things are up ahead for this new year! Hope you have plenty of chances to enjoy them. Let’s appreciate the small as well as the big moments that 2017 will bring. January is a perfect time for discovering, learning and experiencing how to be happier and healthier.

May you have inner peace and restful sleep, and find joy and good health that will embrace you throughout the year!

Laundry Room Etiquette….

The metal carts in the inde-pendent laundry rooms are for trays and dishes from the dining room. Please use them—it keeps our laundry area tidy and welcoming.

The Hearthstone Singers: Continuing the Kersey Legacy By Penny Holcomb, Community Relations Director

It’s been almost a year since resident Gene Kersey envisioned a choral group at Hearth-stone. A few months after moving to Hearthstone in October 2015, Gene’s dream of estab-lishing a community choir became a reality – one that continues to thrive today.

Gene’s skills as visionary, organizer, and musician – as well as his gentle, easy-going tempera-ment -- made it possible for him to bring together a group of 20 Hearthstone residents in Feb-ruary 2016. He started from scratch: no music, no accompanist. But that didn’t stop him from attracting a group of residents who shared his love of choral music.

Singing had been an important part of Gene’s life – starting in his high school years in Edina, Minnesota, and continuing throughout his college education. A member of Dartmouth’s class of 1963, Gene sang in their oldest a cappella choir – the Dartmouth Aires – a small but legendary singing group that performs internationally.

When he took up the baton at Hearthstone, Gene sought the conducting expertise of fellow resident and musician Bob Loy, and the vocal coaching of Hearthstone’s exercise instructor (and longtime choral singer) Angel Higbee. Gene also en-listed my help as the choir’s administrative manager.

By May 2016 the Hearthstone Singers were ready for their first performance: serving as background music for Hearthstone’s annual quilt show. But by the time the choir began to sing, it was standing room only for nearly 50 residents, family members, and friends.

Even following this successful debut performance, the choir was missing a crucial element – a reliable accompanist. Then came an unexpected lucky break. Zane Moore, a new staff member in Hearthstone’s facilities department, turned out to be a trained classical pianist and keyboard composer. It was an immediate fit. He had the musical expertise and versatil-ity the choir needed, and the choir offered him an outlet for his musical talents.

Having accomplished his goal of bringing choral music to Hearthstone, Gene was ready to step away from the daily demands of conducting the choir. Knowing that I shared his pas-sion for and commitment to the choir, Gene passed the baton to me.

The choral group has been the featured entertainment for many Hearthstone events: a musi-cal fundraiser for the Oregon Alzheimer’s Association, a large birthday celebration, a wild-west-themed community event, Hearthstone’s Veterans Day celebration, and two Christmas performances.

Residents, family members and friends have been tremendously appreciative of the choir’s talent and deeply grateful for management’s ongoing sup-port.

Thank you, Gene, for your dedication to this new Hearthstone institution, the Hearthstone Singers. We in the choir appreciate your efforts, and our audi-ences thank you as well. We’ll do our best to con-tinue your legacy.

Choose the Healthiest Tea Submitted by Angel Higbee, Exercise Instructor

As the most sipped beverage in the world after water, tea is far from a new trend. With hundreds of varieties available and research linking tea with many health benefits—a lower risk of cogni-tive decline, heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes—you may wonder which type should be your, well, cup of tea. The answer is: all of them.

Whether it’s black, green, oolong or white, tea offers a no-calorie way to up your intake of disease-fighting plant compounds. True teas are made from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant. The differences in flavor and color depend on how the leaves are rolled, crushed, and exposed to air before drying.

How much tea should you drink? As with other plant foods, there is no standard recommenda-tion. More is generally a good thing—within reason. Some experts recommend two to three cups a day depending on your tolerance to caffeine intake. If you’re concerned about caffeine, choose the decaf option.

Here’s the low-down on the black, green and white varieties:

1) Black tea may help strengthen your skeleton. Post-menopausal women who regularly drank black tea had higher bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and hip, reports a Japanese study that tracked 498 women over five years. Skip the splash of milk because its protein can bind with some of the beneficial compounds in black tea and reduce your body’s ability to absorb them.

2) Green tea gets a lot of attention—and for good reason. It’s a good source of the plant compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Studies show EGCG decreases LDL (bad) cholesterol and may also counter inflammation in the body.

3) White tea contains the most catechins, a type of flavonoid that may help keep blood vessels open and help the body break down fat.

Whether it’s a comforting mug of chamomile or the invigorating scent of peppermint, put the kettle on and enjoy a cup of tea!

The Hearthstone Singers ready to perform on November 11, 2016

Carol Rink: Blending Families Brings Joy Interview by Ruben Wilson, Resident

Carol Alice Stalker Rink was born to Clifford and Verla Karnes in Modesto, California, on December 25, 1926. Her family lived on a farm a few miles from the city. The year she was born, her father built a family home and barn on the property.

Her childhood family grew to include five brothers and two sisters. Carol attended a small country school called Fairview Elementary and later graduated from Modesto High School. She eventually went to De Anza College in Cupertino, California. Carol had ambitions to become a teacher but was hired by the Modesto School District where she worked in the business office for 20 years. During that time, she married and had two sons, Clifford and

Michael. Eventually she became the secretary to the district superintendent. When her first marriage dissolved, she decided to move to the San Jose area. She worked for the General Electric Corporation as a secretary to the design engineers in the equipment manufacturing department generating electrical power. Because of the secretive nature of the Livermore Atomic plant, Carol had to receive an FBI clearance.

While an employee of General Electric, she met Henry Rink, a former Merchant Marine. Henry worked at night as an engineer at a San Jose hospital and attended college during the day to earn his teaching credential. At that time Henry was the single father of three chil-dren, Andrew, David, and Judith. They were both very busy with their immediate families and Henry with his education, so two years passed before he called asking for a date. A romance developed and they married.

He received his college degree and they moved to Fortuna, California, where he taught high school for the next three years. Later Hank took a position teaching English at Foothills College in Los Altos Hills, California. He remained teaching there until his retirement. The older children grew up and a daughter, Victoria, was added, making it a family of six. All of the children became friends and continue to be. Carol now has eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Hank and his sons built them a home in the low hills near Watsonville, California, and life was very good. When he passed away, Carol remained in the home until 2002. She then moved to North Carolina to be near her daughter, Victoria. She remained there for 13 years until she suffered a serious accident. Carol then moved to Portland, Oregon to be closer to her son. Together they discovered Hearth-stone at Murrayhill and she moved here in 2015. Carol says her major life accomplishments are supporting

Activities For People with Alzheimer’sSubmitted by Nena Terry, Anna’s Place Administrator

Keeping aging loved ones active in hobbies and interests that gave them pleasure in the past is impor-tant after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. By offering famil-iar and stimulating activities, you can help to:

• Stir memories• Foster emotional connections with others• Encourage self-expression• Lessen the anxiety and irritability that Alzheim-

er’s may bring• Make people with Alzheimer’s feel more en-

gaged with life

What activities best suit people with Alzheimer’s? That depends on the individual. It is important to create meaningful activities, not just ones that fill time. Con-sider interests your loved ones enjoyed in the past, knowing that some activities may need to be modified for safety or practicality.

Also, keep in mind that activities a person once enjoyed may become overwhelming or even frustrating now. Certain activities may work better at different times of day. With those principles in mind, here are 10 suggestions to try with your loved one:

• Sing songs or play music• Simple arts and crafts• Organize household items, particularly if the person used to take pleasure in organiza-

tional tasks• Clean around the house: Sweep the patio, wipe the table, fold towels or try other

household tasks that help the person feel a sense of accomplishment• Work in the garden• Read the newspaper• Look at books the person used to enjoy• Cook or bake simple recipes together• Work on puzzles• Watch family videos

her older sons as a single mother; successfully blending her and Hank’s children to form a happy family; and completing several college courses. Carol is very proud of her children and their achievements. Clifford builds high rise buildings in San Francisco; Andrew is a composer of opera/classical music and a writer for NY Magazine; David is a building contractor in Berkeley and Twain Hart, California. Michael is with the Intel Corporation and works in both San Jose and Portland. Judith is a vineyard and winery owner in California, and Victoria is a medical doctor.

How You—Residents and Your Families—Brought Joy to the Hourly Staff

Each year, residents of Hearthstone at Murrayhill communities and their families express their appreciation to hourly staff in the form of contributions given to the Hearthstone Staff Recognition Christmas Fund.

Last December contributions made to the fund in 2016 were dis-tributed among 151 hourly staff as a thank you for their service. The employees received 31 cents for each hour worked during the year.

The hourly staff expressed overwhelming gratitude for your gift.

Sincerely, The 2016 Resident Council

Residents Bestow Holiday Blessings

Some people have all the fun! Resident Kay Elliot cools off from our 25 degree temperatures by making a Snow Angel on the deck outside the Activities Room.

It was a gingerbread house to remember. Residents toured the Benson Hotel in down-town Portland to see their chef’s renowned annual gingerbread house display. The culi-nary creation required 300 hours of prepara-tion, 100 pounds of gingerbread, and 50 pounds of white choc-olate and marzipan.
