Will: Speaking from apersonal perspective andusing our marriage as areference to address thequestion that is posed. Iwould simply suggest thathaving a strongfoundation is the key tohaving a lastingrelationship. If it is builton anything less; i.e. sex, greed, opportunism,

infatuation, or lust, it willnot last.

Odette: I agree. Likemixing cement, sand, andwater to create a firmand lasting foundationfor a structure, arelationship shouldhave no less bindingelements to ensure asuccessful outcome. In our case we had a

strong friendship, acommitment witha shared common goaland God.

You and I where likeBatman and Robin, theDynamic Duo, Bonnieand Clyde. You didntsee one without theother. Whether we were

Why do some relationships have that so called staying power? While othersseem to crash and burn shortly after take off. Can the average Joe or Jane really

achieve longevity in a relationship? Or does a person have to come from theplanet Krypton or be a Greek goddess to truly experience the joy of life long love?

As it relates to love, the question how do you keep the music playing offers anopportunity to reflect. In doing so we are able to rekindle the fire of our past as weexplore what makes for a long lasting relationship?

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING

    By Will & Odette Hooks

out shopping, at thegym, grabbing a biteto eat, or just chillinat home, there wereno strings attached toour friendship. Wesimple enjoyed eachothers company.

Will: Thats so true, and although I knowthere are those that will

disagree with the notionof no strings attached, but thats the truth. The idea that a personcan go from notknowing anythingabout another personinto a relationship withintimate tendency onthe near horizon is quitefrightful to say theleast. The importantthing to remember

about our friendshipwas the openness wehad in communicatingwith each other.

Most men, myselfincluded, will not open upand communicate onissues that are close totheir heart with someonethey are intimate with as

they would a closefriend with whom theycan relate. Thefriendship was theproving ground for usto determine if wewanted to go beyondbeing friends. Whenwe became more thanfriends somehow theequation changed. Asfriends we never had

one argument or fight, but when we became anitem our differencesthen rose to the surface. But I credit ourfoundation as friends asthe key component thatheld us together.

Odette: As friends wediscovered that weshared common goals inlife. I wanted to be

successful, I wantedshare my life with aperson that shared thesame values and dreamsthat I had. Having setgoals for my life I wasfocused and committedto improving myquality of life. I wasfortunate to find in yousomeone who shared my

    WHY DO SOME RELATIONSHIPS HAVE

THAT SO CALLED STAYING POWER?vision for life. I knewwhat I wanted and I knewwhat it would take to getthere. And then, you canaround and touched myheart, as Johnny Gillwould say.

Will: Well my, my, my; Icouldnt agree more.Based on my past andthe struggles that I had

come through as a youngman, I knew that I wantedmore out of life that what Ihad left behind. I alsodesired to build my futurewith someone thatbrought more to thetable than drama andnegativity. What I foundin you was someone thathad overcome her owntrials and tribulations and

yet still had a dream, drive, and thedetermination to pursuit it.

Odette: The thirdcomponent was God.Thats right, I said it, God.I remember the nightbefore we got married; wewere at the church for therehearsal. After therehearsal you walked upto me and said, I need totalk to you.I could tell

you were very serious. My attentiveness wasconcrete and my eyeswere locked on you. Thefirst words out of yourmouth after that were, Icant marry you. OMG! Ithought very calmly, whyand what happenedbetween the end ofrehearsal and that

moment. You began totell me why and I reallyunderstood. That eveningI did exactly what youasked and I thank Godfor that very eveningevery time I think of thefoundation of ourmarriage.

Will: Of course you knowmy grandmother raised

me, and it was herteaching me early on inlife to be truly successfulat anything, you mustmake God a part of yourlife. Even though I hadgrown up and gottenaway from family andGod, I still rememberedthe way I was raised. Allbe it true, you and I hadbeen living as a married

couple for over a year, yet we were not married. Iknew in my heart I wasdisobeying the teachingof my grandmother andGod.

I was so convicted thatnight during rehearsalthat I had to make itright. I wasnt surehow you wouldrespond, but amazinglyyou felt the same way.My instructions wereclear, find a place in thechurch to be alone withGod, ask for hisforgiveness of our sinsand the life we hadbeen living with eachother, and in the sameprayer ask God to nowbless the union we wereabout to enter into as

husband and wife. Iwent up to the balconyand knelt down andprayed that prayer, Imnot certain where youwent. But, one thing Iam certain of, God isstill honoring ourprayers to this day.

In conclusion wellconcede that there are

different strokes fordifferent folks, and thatthere is no one size fitsall, especially whendealing with matters ofthe heart. Yet for us,starting as friends, sharing a common goaland making God thecenterpiece of ourmarriage, has made thelast twenty years worth

every moment together, including the good, thebad, and the ugly.Having this foundationhas proven to be thesecret to the success ofour relationship and howwe keep the musicplaying.

    Hair Care Advice

Have you ever wondered why some people have luscious hair that is shiny and neverlooks out of place, and why you don't? A healthy hair makeover is surprisingly not toohard to achieve. All you need to do is learn a few healthy hair secrets and try a little homemaintenance.

Great Hair Starts With a Good CutA professional haircut will ensure that your hair is free from damaged and split ends andwill make your hair look healthy. Seeing a professional will also give you the opportunityto get the right cut for your hair type and texture. Follow up visits which include regulartrims will also guarantee that your hair will look and feel its best. Just like trimming plantsback, trimming your hair ensures hair receives vital nutrients.

Get ColdBoost the shine in your hair by giving it a cold rinse under the shower after washing andconditioning.

Go EasyNever vigorously dry your hair using a towel. This action roughens up the cuticle givinghair a dull and tangled appearance once dry. Gently pat your hair with your towel.

Don't bring out the brush too soonWhen blow drying hair, separate tangles with fingers or a wide tooth comb until hair isabout 80 percent dry then try brushing. You want to make sure your fingers glide throughhair effortlessly before introducing a brush to wet or even damp hair.

Avoid Product OverloadDon't use too many products. Product overload will weigh your hair down and make itlook tired and greasy. Remember this rule: One product to style and one product to finish.

Heat Styling HazardWhen you use a heat styler such as a hair-dryer, straightener or curling iron, make sureto apply a heat protection product first. Heated stylers can zap your hair of moisture andleave your hair frizzy and hardto manage.

HAIR DOS BY LIZ AYERS HAIR DOS BY

Do not use hair sprayits extremely drying. Common ingredients like alcohol andethanol can be very damaging to your hair because they dry it out, causing it to

snap or break very easily. If you must use hair spray, consider using one thatcontains natural ingredients and conditioners, as they are gentler.

Don't Soak it UpLimit the amount of saturation from pool or ocean water by brushing a few drops

MORE HAIR CARE ADVICE FROM LIZ AYERS

Limit the amount of saturation from pool or ocean water by brushing a few drops ofMoroccanoil or conditioner through your dry hair with a boar-bristle brush, and thendouse your hair with fresh water. Hair can absorb only so much liquid, so if you enterchlorinated or salt water with wet hair, youll prevent some of the water frompenetrating. The oil acts as an additional barrier because oil and water dont mix. Donot forget to shampoo your hair thoroughly after swimming to avoid leaving chlorineon it.

Sleeping BeautyWhen you are sleeping your body is working its hardest to repair damage, includingany hair damage, so plenty of sleep is a must. To further help your hair achieve its

healthy best, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase. This will stop your hair from rubbingas you sleep and will control fly-a-ways.

Moisture MadnessTry an intensive conditioner once a week to keep your locks moisturized and to keepyour hair soft. Toget the best from your deep treatment, apply it to your hair then cover with plasticwrap or a plastic shower cap and leave for ten minutes before rinsing out. This willtrap heat and allow the treatment to penetrate. For a deeper condition, wrap a warmtowel over the plastic wrap.

Eat RightEating a well-balanced diet which is full of healthy proteins and lots of vitamins willkeep your hair glowing. Not to mention your skin and your waistline! Eat a healthydiet. Studies have shown thatomega-3 fatty acidsfound in foods such as salmon, spinach, and omega-3-richeggscan keep your hair strong and looking healthy and shiny!

Healthy Hair Is Hydrated HairDrink plenty of water. Water not only hydrates your skin and body, it also hydratesyour hair.

Aint got no job, aint got no money, aint got no gas, aint got no rideaint got no skills, aint got no money for school. But a head ache, hearache, sad face, anxiety and depression is something you cant get ridof!

Wow, this sounds awful, its just one long complaint. Unfortunatelythese are pressing issues that are affecting many people in todayspresent economy. With unemployment rates still being very high inmany states, its almost like adding insult to injury when you turn on thenews and hear politicians saying that the economy is taking a turn forthe better because it only makes the less fortunate wonder when is thischange coming to their side of town.

With basic survival being a common worry many people who arenormally healthy are now experiencing feelings of anxiety anddepression. So what can you do to ease your anxieties and to stopbeing depressed ... take a pill, a vacation, or run away?

Medicine might be the answer for some people and if you really needit, get it, but for those who havent reached that level lets explore somealternatives. Below are 5 keynotes to coping with anxiety anddepression when its stemming from worries of the economy and moneyIm applying these practices to my life and its helping me.

    1. Pray, Meditate. When you pray and meditate you allow yourself to

tap into your spiritual side and through meditation you are able torelease your worries and calm down!2. Revise your budget. Live within your means not to the max. You

must accept that your financial situation has changed, dont live alie or try to maintain a lifestyle that you can no longer afford.

    3. Get back to the basics. Entertain yourself with free activities ..the park, beach or movie nights at home. When you worry lessabout money youll feel better.

    4. Find support in organizations, talking about whats bothering youSupport groups and organizations can offer some relief and it allowsyou to see that you are not alone.

    5. Make time for yourself. Set aside some quiet time just for you.

A SALAD THAT SCREAMS BINGO!SURPRISE REVIEW ON MERTS HEART & SOUL ...

It was love at first sight! I fell in love withthe ambience before I even had a bite toeat.

Kelle, aka QC Super Mom, asked me ifI wanted to get out for my birthday; sheoriginally wanted to go somewhere elsebut Im glad she changed her mind andtook me to Merts Heart & Soul. Thisplace is going to be one of my newstumping grounds.

People where sitting outside chitchatting in the 70 degree weather ... windblowing, passerbyers walking along theside walk. We tried to hang outside butafter maybe about a good 7 minutes wedecide to dine inside.

No problem, our waitress assured asshe welcomed us to take a seatwherever we wanted to.

We scanned the menu and Kelle said,Girl, wait to you taste the cornbread. Ilove cornbread, Im just a bread type of

girl anyway, so I was looking forward toit.

It was kind of late in the evening for afull course meal so we both decided tohave a salad. Kelle called me a copy catbecause I decided to have the ButtermilkChicken Tender salad like her. I beg todiffer, Im truly an independent free spiritbut hey, I know when to follow a goodidea and Im so glad that I followed suite

because they have a salad that screamsBINGO!

The mixed greens were topped withchicken tenders that were soaked inbuttermilk, herb marinade and whitecheddar cheese. I added blue cheeseand ranch salad dressing and it was ohso delicious. Let me add that this saladwas huge, they werent stingie with thelettuce! We also ordered some HomeFries (wedges) and after that on top of

corn bread, I was full and very satisfied!

The waitresses even sang happybirthday to me! That topped the evening... Id recommend Merts Heart & Souland I know Ill be back soon to try moredishes on the menu.

    RAHEEM MALIK RAHEEM MALIK

Interviewing Raheem Malik brought back a good feeling about musicand the entertainment industry for me. His giddiness reminded me ofwhy I'm a Writer, and why I publish Enjoy Life Magazine its all forthe love of entertainment, for the smile that one wears on their facewhile being interviewed for the first time. Its for the inspiration that onereceives from reading a positive story or watching an unknown artistdevelop into a star and Raheem Malik is shinning bright!

    RAHEEM MALIK By Lakesha Woods

Growing up in Detroit, Raheem says he often found himself withoutany activities. With not much to do, he began to test the waters andexperiment with the sound of music. It was during his senior year inhigh school that he started producing before he even started singing.Yet, his sounds were good enough for his ears he didn't always wantto share his music. He said he was scared and really didn't want peopleto hear his music in fear that they wouldn't like it. The first time heactually sang was in front of a crowd was at school; he sang thenational anthem. He received a standing ovation and it was then thathe realized he had a special gift and his level of confidence increased.

After high school, he went on to college and took his love for music

with him. It was one of his very own friends who discovered his talents:Brian Hutcheson, who was also attending college with Raheem at

Albion in Michigan. Its like they both inspired each other to pursue theirdreams. Brian started his own record label, Digital Dollar and Raheemwas the first artist to be signed. When I asked Raheem if he feels anypressure to succeed being that he was the first artist to be signed toDigital Dollar he said yes, but he also feels very fortunate to have afriend who believes in him so much to the point that he was willing toinvest in his music career.

I asked Raheem how is it that he manages to keep the appeal of beinga rapper and a singer and why not just be one or the other instead ofboth, he said that he feels that he is to unique to just be a rapper or

ust a singer. Raheem went on to explain that his audience is diverseenough to appreciate his combination style and that his combinationof R&B and Hip Hop is what carries the appeal. In his opinion he feelsthat he's reaching the Hip Hop and the R&B fans all at the same time.

I can vouch for him by saying that he definitely has some appeal. Histransition from singing a main verse to dropping a few rap bars is verysmooth. His lyrics as an R&B artist match his lyrical rhymes as a rapper. He doesn't' go from being a smooth operator to a gangster rapper. Hesimply transitions from singing to rhyming.

Raheem has fire under his feet and he says he's interested in working

...OVERALL ITS BEEN A BLAST....with everybody, from the unknown to the well known.

I asked Raheem how is life now for him as a professional recordingartist. He reiterated that before his career took off life in Detroit waspretty mundane but now he can hardly lay his head on a pillow for agood rest before the next caller rings his phone. Raheem says, "Life asan artist has been crazy! Overall its been a blast".

At the end of our light hearted interview Raheem said, I m a veryapproachable guy I'm like your next door neighbor, an everyday kindaguy with talent".

    & Soul

Yes, thats me last summer in a dressing room.I was proudly taking pictures of myself to showoff my weight loss progress. I was also takingpictures to get a second look: you know thecamera never lies!

When shopping I think of the dressing roomas the moment of truth, its just you, theclothes and the mirror, you take off the old totry on the new. Whether its a new outfit for aspecial occasion or new suit for work; whenyou step into that dressing room you are alone

with the mirror, awaiting an answer.

If youre like me, then you may seek a secondopinion but even if others like the clothing onme, I wont buy it if I dont feel confidentwearing it. If I cant strut my stuff without feelinglike it might pop, split, rise up or pinch my lovehandles to the point of suffocation, then forgetabout it ... it goes back on the rack!

Having confidence in your appearance isimportant. The way you look has a great affect

on your personality and even the wayothers will treat you. I remember beinga teenager and walking into a PublixSupermarket to inquire about gettingan application. I was already in thestore to purchase a few things but Ifigured while I was there I may as wellask for an application. Well, not onlydid I have an opportunity to get an

application, I also was asked to comein and watch a video about the store. While seated in the video room themanager noticed that I had on flip flops

and he said, Next time you come in toapply for a job you shouldnt have onflip flops. I was like WOW! I onlywanted an application and I could havetaken it home, filled it out and turned itin later. Needless to say, I didnt get the

job. Lesson learned first impressionslast and appearance does matter. I alsolearned to never apply for a job whileshopping at the location in my beachflip flops!

Ive also had many positiveexperiences, in fact, theres one suitthat I call my power suit and its myfavorite interview suit as well. When Iput that suit on and walk into a room -BOOM - youre hired thats what Idhear just about every time! Ok, ok, itreally doesnt happen exactly like that, there isnt as much animation, but I tellyou no lie, when Im in that suit myconfidence level is very high!

    Many research studies have

concluded that a sharp appearance canactually help you get the job and thepromotion. So if all it takes is a goodlook to boost your career, what aboutyour sex life? Fortunately, beauty is inthe eye of the beholder and looks arenteverything when it comes to love, butweight may be a valid concernespecially for women when it comesdown to sex!

    & Soul

Duke University researchers studied91 obese men and 134 obese women. They completed a sexual functioningquestionnaire just before enrolling in aweight loss study. The questionnairecovered nine areas: desire, interest, arousal, orgasm, behavior, relationship, satisfaction, masturbation and sexualproblems (not necessarily in that order).

Dr. Truls Ostbye, a professor in thedepartment of community and familymedicine said in a Duke news release,"We found that there was lower sexualsatisfaction and lower sexual quality of lifeamong women than men, and overall

sexual quality of life was low among bothgroups". (quote from health.usnews.com).

Taking this study into consideration doesit mean that women have a need to lookgood or be thinner more so than men inorder to feel good during sex?

Well, to further check this theory EnjoyLife Magazine surveyed one hundredmen and women, (50 men and 50women). The readers were asked if they

have more sex when they feel confidentabout their appearance and if the sex ismore enjoyable for them when they feelgood about the way they look.

Thirty-eight women out of fifty said yes,to having an increase in their sex liveswhen their personal appearance is atbest, they also said yes to enjoying sexmore when they are more confident withtheir appearance and 31 out of 50 mensaid no, their personal appearancechanges nothing regarding their sex life.So it appears that the majority of menhave no problem with their appearanceand whether its at its best or worst theirsex lives dont change. So, it looks likewomen are more concerned aboutappearance and when women dontfeel good about the way they look, theyhave less sex!

While appearance is important formany different reasons, ultimately themost important thing is to set a standard

for yourself. Dont worry about being likepeople that you see on television.

Im working on a finer me and itsproving to be a life long process. I cantspeak for anyone else but as far as Imconcerned my overall appearance reflectshow I feel on the inside. Ive noticed thatI eat more sweets when Im sad, I drink

more coffee when Im tired and I eat veryhealth when Im focusing on myspirituality. When it comes down to myattire, oh brother, a bad day is sometimesevident because I wont even fix myselfup! Other times I may go over board intodiva mode to gain an instant high.

A bad hair day might be a great hat day.Jogging pants and a t-shirt with socks onand Im under the weather and if I getdepressed its a pajama day ... all day!

Power moves are made my powerfulpeople and a great attitude cant beexpressed through a suit ... a greatattitude exudes from the person whoswearing the suit. I think that a niceappearance helps - whether it be to haveneat and stylish clothing, a new hair style

or cut, weight maintained, weight loss ora change of make-up it all helps to buildconfidence and gives us extra push orpick-me up but dont forget that it startsfrom within physically, mentally andspiritually the mind, body and soul has tobe balanced and image is only everythingwhen you have nothing else!

    Until next time ...

So recently my best friend called me up and frantically explained it was her birthday andshe could not figure out what dress to wear. This is a pivotal and fundamental age beforeshe would say she is no longer in her twenty's so it was therefore imperative that she

needed for this specialoccasion. It was acopper and blackstrapless, short, fitteddress.

The next step was toget matching shoes of

course, so I immediatelywent onto lulus.com; agreat shopping site for avariety of current trendyshoes and apparel.Shortly after I foundthese great SteveMadden stiletto pumps

in black suede, theywere a perfect match forher since there were nostraps adding length toher legs (for shorter

women; try wearingheels that don't havestraps covering yourankles unless they arethe same color with yourskin, this addsdimension to your legsand gives the illusion

    that you are taller).

Lastly accessories and make-up was allthat was left to get and do. It was somewhat

celebrated with the right dress and onethat would have the power to keep heryouth sustained forever in her twenty'sdespite the impossible reality. I thought ofher effervescent, gentle, ever-c h a n g i n gpersonality and herknack to dressyouthful and sexywhile being aseparated motherof two children. She overcame somany obstaclesand never had thesocial life sheyearned to be apart of. This is a girlthat was in direneed of atransformation, andI was determined tohelp her.

So taking intoconsideration hersize that sheworked so ferventlytowards for manyyears, I decidedright away to goonto edressme.com; a site that offers manyvarious dress styles for every occasion andusually is discounted at very low rates. AsI scrolled through many dress styles and

    Panty hose!

chilly out so panty hose were a must andgreat way to cinch the 'love-handles,' I got ablack sheer shape hugger from Victoria'sSecret in a size smaller than her actual dress

size (try to buy a size smaller than what youwould typically wear for an instant shapeminimize; e.g. I am a size three in dressesso I would wear a size A in panty hose, andsometimes you can get a great pair at apharmacy for much less).

Next was jewelry which I only needed apair of earrings for such a highlysequenced dress. I picked one up from aBebe store; they had great length, coppercolored and was elegant for wearing withthis dress.

Finally her make-up look was anobvious must for a smoky eye and nude

lips. This would accentuate herexotic features and was cohesivewith the look of the dress. In theend it was a major success andshe was very contented. Checkout the attached pictures for all ofthe merchandise mentioned, andvisit those shopping sites whenyou are in dire need of a quickfashion fix for a very specialoccasion.

On a muggy day in May I was able tomeet with talk show personality AshleiElise. We decided to meet at a quiet pizzaplace across the street from her school, the University of North Carolina Charlotte.Ms. Elise stands about 5'6 and isstunning. Her warm glow makes it easyto understand why the camera loves her.

A testament to her dedication, Ms. Eliseagreed to meet with me despite having

spent the entire morning moving from herdorm to new home. Always theprofessional, Ms. Elise suggested we getright to the interview. However, I insistedwe pause and get a bite to eat. Theconversation that followed the meal wouldbe one of the most genuinely inspirationalinterviews this young journalist has evercovered.

Dream Big, Stand Out, Go Far. Thesewords influence, motivate and drive all ofMs. Elise's actions. Her dream began in2008 when she became frustrated with

the lack of variety on television. The onlything on TV was reality shows; nothingthat showcased the positive things ourgeneration were accomplishing on a dailybasis. Fast-forward a year later and Ms.Elise was diligently planning her ownshow.

From November 2010 to January2011 Ashlei formulated a plan to recruitteam members, develop topics for theshow and secure funding. In the early

months of the Ashlei Elise Project themost daunting challenge was findingfinancial support. This problem wassolved by her loving boyfriend ChristianSoto, who enlisted his fraternity Psi SigmaPhi to sponsor the Ashlei Elise Show. Theoutpouring of support that the EliseProject received was staggering;thousands of emails were received withindays of the creation of the show'sFacebook page. Within 4 months over

10,000 unique views were logged into hersite and she was attracting attention fromacross the country.

Since the conception of the Ashlei EliseProject there have been five showsfilmed. Despite being fun, there is a lot ofwork that is involved behind the scenesof each and every show. When I asked

Ashlei what her favorite part of producinga talk show was she answered the rushof pre-production, there are so manythings that need to be done in the hoursleading up to filming-its stressful yet

exhilarating. Some notable intervieweesof the Ashlei Elise show include JenniferBrix (talk show host), Anthony Euro(fashion designer to the stars), and AndyGrammer (up and coming musician)

In addition to broadcasting interestingand groundbreaking topics the AshleiElise Show and its staff are alsodedicated to making a difference in theirown community. Ms. Elise and the staffof the show have volunteered their time

Also, the show has securedthe financial support of the University ofNorth Carolina-Charlotte to continue toproduce quality television on the campus

    station called NinerTV.

In conclusion, Ashlei Elise excelsbecause she does what she enjoys, anddoes not let naysayers get the best of her.Her drive along with the talents of herclose-knit team is a testament to theadvantages of doing what one ispassionate about. She is a true inspirationto people of all ages to pursue their goals

You can be sure this rising star willcontinue to burn brightly in anything she

sets her mind to, and you can too. Tocontact the Ashlei Elise Project you canemail: [email protected].

When I asked whyshe felt so strongly about volunteering atleast 5 hours a week to non-profits sheanswered If you forget where you'vecome from how can you really know howfar you've come? The wisdom imparted

on me by Ms. Elise was refreshing andmoved me deeply.

Finally, before the interview was completeI wanted to be walked through a typicallyday of filming for the Ashlei Elise Show. When I asked her this she beamed; Icould tell there was nothing else shewould rather talk about. It starts when Iwake up around 9, I check emails fromthe previous night then I update the listfor the next guest for the show. After classI head to the apartment (that doubles as

our headquarters) to prepare. Then, theteam and I prepare makeup, the scriptand the wardrobe. Then, before we reachthe stage we alltry to loosen up and pause for a quickphoto shoot shot by PaigeAlisaPhotography. Finally, before we know itstime to go on.
