PALACE THEATER MISSION STATEMENT

To preserve and operate the historic Palace Theater as a performing arts center and community gathering place that provides a focal point of cultural activity and educational outreach for diverse audiences.

Page 3: Enjoy. Inspire. Enrich

Dear Friends, If we learned one thing this past season, it’s that weather is a great metaphor for business. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, and despite how well you try to forecast, the climate is never one hundred percent predictable. For the Palace Theater, this past year was all about weathering the storm – literally! When we launched the kick-off to our 2011-2012 season marketing campaign, Hurricane Irene launched her way onto the Connecticut coastline, leaving thousands without power for over a week. Then, after rallying for a sold-out October performance by the Pixies and a run of Broadway’s In the Heights, Winter Storm Alfred blew into town

shutting down the state for almost two weeks and leaving patrons stranded in their homes without power or heat. While no business forecasting could predict the challenges of weathering these ‘freak” storms at home, on a national level the theater industry, as well as most other businesses, continued to struggle with a different type of unpredictable climate – an economic one troubled with sluggish employment rates and a diminished consumer confidence. Yet, as the captain of any great ship will tell you, it takes guidance and perseverance to weather the storm, especially to come out on the other end fully intact and headed in the right direction. This past season, we are proud to say that we effectively weathered the storms of 2011, and ended our season with much clearer skies on the horizon. Of course, this accomplishment wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of so many remarkable people including our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, patrons, donors and philanthropic supporters. Unrelenting in their generosity and support, these individuals ensure that we remain focused on our mission and encourage us to stay on course no matter how choppy the waters. This 2011-2012 Annual Report not only acknowledges our numerous accomplishments from the past season, but also allows us the opportunity to celebrate the remarkable success we have experienced in furthering our mission of providing live theater, inspiring our youth, enriching the lives of our community members and recognizing all those who selflessly give their support. We look forward to blue skies and smooth sailing for many years to come. Sincerely,

Sandra Vigliotti Senich Frank Tavera Chairman of the Board Chief Executive Officer

Ron & mARie vitARelli “We’re happy that our

contribution is being used

to bring enjoyment to our

community while creating

lasting memories for future

generations.”

From Jackson Browne to Blue Man Group to Clifford the Big Red Dog, the Palace Theater’s 2011-2012 performance

calendar undoubtedly ran the spectrum of “colorful” characters. Recognized by Pollstar Magazine as one of the “Top

100 Worldwide Theater Venues for 2011,” the Palace once again stepped into the national spotlight, serving as the

official launch site for the national Broadway tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, as well as hosting

several major U.S. tours by artists like Jane’s Addiction, The Pixies and The Charlie Daniels Band.

tHeAteR HigHligHts:

• Over 190 performances, technical activities and special events, including weddings and business functions, were presented on the Palace stage during the 2011-2012 season

• From post-show surveys to a personal newsletter from the CEO, the Palace introduced new concierge-level services and customer service initiatives to enhance the theater experience

• The Palace was named “Best Revived Theater in Connecticut” by Yankee Magazine

future generations.”

The arts are basic to a child’s education and are proven to have a tremendous impact on their developmental growth and self-esteem. By encouraging

creative thinking, positive self-expression and a desire to learn, after-school programs like the Palace Theater’s Learning in the Wings internship

program, Palatial News journalism program, and I Give My Word character development program help instill today’s youth with a passion for the arts

while benefiting them socially, personally, and intellectually. This past season, the Palace has touched over 10,000 young lives through its internship

programs, complementary arts and education initiatives and main stage Education Series presentations.

Students like Viola Flowers and Brianna Petrucelli (left) volunteer their time and talents through the Palace Volunteer Guard and internship programs.

educAtion HigHligHts:

• Over 1,060 underserved students received ticket subsidies from The Ticket & Travel Subsidy Fund

• The Palace was chosen as one of ten theaters nationwide to receive a prestigious national education grant from The Broadway League

• The theater provided gallery space to showcase student artwork from the Special Olympics and CT Association of Schools’ Unified Arts program

Enrich Our Community

Ron pugliese “An investment

in the arts is an investment

in the community… I’m

committed to helping the

theater continue to improve

the region’s economy, image

and growth.”

A community is like a large mosaic. When each individual piece comes together, it creates a masterpiece

greater than the sum of its parts. As a non-profit, the Palace Theater understands the importance of

community and is dedicated to the adage of “paying it forward.” In June 2012, the theater proudly lent

its stage as the construction site for Waterbury’s largest piece of public art, a grand scale community

mosaic funded by the State’s City Canvases Initiative. For weeks, dozens of volunteers dedicated hours

to sorting, clipping, and gluing thousands of tiny tiles, all of which ultimately pieced together to create a

symbol of community spirit that now proudly hangs in downtown Waterbury.

4

community HigHligHts:

• Six graduation ceremonies for local middle school, high school and college graduates were held at the Palace in 2011

• Twenty-five cents of every ticket purchased at the Box Office was donated to support the Waterbury Region Arts & Culture Collaborative

• The City of Waterbury selected the Palace as the site for Mayor Neil O’Leary’s inauguration ceremony

• The theater hosted several “give back nights” that raised funds for non-profits like WATR’s Sunshine Fund, Republican-American’s Campership Fund, and Waterbury Hospital’s t.g.i.f. Women’s Wellness Forum.

Give Your SupportGiving comes in many forms. Volunteers give time. Donors give money. Businesses give back. The Palace Theater is extremely fortunate to be on the receiving end of all of these

forms of generosity. This past season, participation in the Volunteer Guard reached record-breaking numbers, while corporate memberships and company sponsorships increased

with the support of over 75 local businesses. Even special events experienced a 25% increase in attendance last year, making annual events like the Stages Wine Dinner and

first time occasions like the Palace’s inaugural Motorcycle Ride successful endeavors for both the theater and its community of supporters.nAncy & joel BecKeR “Our

appreciation for the Palace

transcends to the preservation

of the classical arts and

the desire to provide an

opportunity for all walks of

life to experience live theater.”

5

Special fundraising events like the annual “Keys to Our Future” end-of-the-year party (above) and the Palace’s first-ever motorcycle ride (right) collectively raised close to $225,000 for the Palace Annual Campaign.

giving HigHligHts:

• A total of 1,660 individual donations were made to the Palace’s Annual Campaign in 2011

• 250 members of the Volunteer Guard collectively donated over 12,450 hours to the theater

• Corporate membership and sponsorship collectively contributed a total of $280,000
