The coach-athlete relationship can be impacted by personality characteristics such as the athlete’s passion for his or her sport. Where the athlete has harmonious passion, meaning the athlete has a strong desire to engage in the athletic activity freely, the coach-athlete relationship is more likely to be high-quality. On the other hand, an athlete with obsessive passion, meaning the athlete’s desire results from intrapersonal or interpersonal pressures, is more likely to have a less than optimal coach-athlete relationship.
