Thanks for the invitation.

Overview
I am here to share my thoughts on the idea that increased engagement is beneficial for our students and…
one way we can increase engagement is through the use of technologies.
![Page 4: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Why me?
![Page 5: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
I Believe Actively engaged students are able to achieve far greater success in class or where ever they are learning.
Technology may not always the answer.
![Page 6: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
My other beliefs about engagement
• More art than science. • Intentionally• If you don’t promote it no one will.• Increasing engagement should be the aim of
all educators.
![Page 7: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What do we mean by engagement?
![Page 8: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
You tell me.
![Page 9: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Motivating?
![Page 10: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Inspiring?
![Page 11: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
I see two aspects of engagement.
![Page 12: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
One
Students’ engagement in their learning.
![Page 13: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
• Our expectations matter.• How much? – Level of engagement must suit who they are as
learners. • Assess their RCD levels.
![Page 14: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
What do we want for them?
• Expectations of, and options for, students are changing.
• The world of teaching and learning needs to change as well.
• But…we live in a human created world.– It is not perfect so should be expect perfection?– Literacy levels
![Page 15: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
What has changed?
• Students having more control over their learning
• Problem-based learning, • Assessment for learning, and• Social constructivist approaches.
![Page 16: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
There was a time when the only options for learning engagement were in the classroom, maybe the library or most recently the computer lab.
Not any more.
![Page 17: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
We now have multiple opportunities for engagement through the use of technology.
![Page 18: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
BYOD?
![Page 19: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
They are never without their D’s!
Powerful, connected, mobile.
![Page 20: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Let us use this connectedness.
For good not bad.
Effective connectedness.
Powered Up schools
![Page 21: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Think about a recent experience related to student engagement?
What were some key aspects?
Discuss with your area or elbow partner.
![Page 22: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Two
The student-teacher relationship.
![Page 23: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Student-Teacher Engagement
• Not always constant – More independent and asynchronous learning.
• Depth not amount.• Different ways to craft and share thoughts,
messages and assignments. • Potential for connections outside of regular
school day.
![Page 24: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Engagement time
Think about a time in the past when you were deeply engaged with a teacher or educator.
What did they do to make the experience a successful one for you?
![Page 25: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Wait!
![Page 26: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Hey Jay
• What I am doing is already successful.• Why is making the extra effort important?• More technologically-mediated learning might
ruin a good thing.
![Page 27: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Don’t worry.
• I am not here to convince you to radically change what you are doing.
• Maintain • Opportunities• Can you do better for your students?
![Page 28: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
• Pushing the ‘teaching with technology’ agenda is a valid concern.
• Adds a layer.• Impact on personal contact. + and –
Potential to develop a ‘community of learners’ among students. Face-to-face may be less.
![Page 29: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
It’s a big decision
• The education system and the learners in it are constantly changing.
• Increasing engagement using technology is an opportunity for students to look at their education differently.
• SPS places an emphasis on effective mix of technology and inquiry in all learning situations.
![Page 30: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Options and opportunities
![Page 31: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
10,000 hours
Why not initiate that technology journey for our students now?
![Page 32: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Increasing engagement using technology
• Starts with your desire to become a more effective teacher.
• Is based on a solid foundation of teaching. • Will be learned from others. • Allows you to utilize new ways to share.
![Page 33: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
• Engage students by inviting them to have input into decisions around:– Content– Evaluation– Process
• Not abdicating but involving.
![Page 34: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
What Do Students Want
• Ask them. – Determine what works for them.– What do they use already?– What would they like to try?
• Exit slips, course evaluations, dialogue.
![Page 35: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Help them realize that we trust them.
![Page 36: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Inquiry learning is a great place to start.
![Page 37: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Begin with a question.
![Page 38: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
![Page 39: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Practical considerations
In theory it sounds fine.
How do we do it for reals?
![Page 40: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
You are a key component
Impact
• Don’t be afraid to be a person. • Be passionate. • Share and they will share. • Set the foundation for engagement.
![Page 41: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
• Have expectations around being engaged with technology.
• Make them work hard and support them. • Modify your plan as you go.• You will make mistakes.• “Do you trust me?”
![Page 42: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
• Driven by the interest of the learners.– ‘learning technology’ = bad– Discovery = good
• Move from skill development to transformation
• Beware of the garlic press • What is already out there?
![Page 43: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Before you use any technology learners need to know– How to be good consumers– Use time wisely – Online etiquette– Digital citizenship– Personal profile management
• Utilize SPS supportsSPS gold mine
![Page 44: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Make learning authentic
• Bring them to places through the technology.• Make connections to the larger community.• Engage experts and others in the community.• Let students choose.
![Page 45: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)

Conclusion
I hope that you share my belief that there are benefits to increased engagement supported by technology.
You do not have to become someone else.
![Page 55: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
It means you need to try something that can feel intimidating and scary but….
it is during these times of uncertainty when we remember why we became teachers.
![Page 56: Enhancing Student Engagement with Technology](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022070420/56815e41550346895dccb001/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
Ultimately to make the learning experience the best it can be for our students.
