In 1957, the search for oil by Pak Stanvac, an
Esso/Mobil joint venture led to the discovery
of the Mari Gas field near Daharki – a small,
remote area in Upper Sindh province at the
time. Esso proposed the establishment of a
urea plant in that area which led to a
fertilizer plant agreement signed in 1964. In
the subsequent year, Esso Pakistan Fertilizer
Company Limited was incorporated, with 75%
of the shares owned by Esso and 25% by the
general public.

Under Asad Umar’s leadership, Engro’s

player in different diverse businesses which
still are increasing earnings and value of
Engro Corporation .
Asad Umar, President of fertiliser-to-food
conglomerate, Engro Corporation has taken
an early retirement. Such an event is
scarcely surprising, for men at the top of

It was unexpected for Engro that when it was
expanding and getting record profits and its
President quit in such successful time period.
After an early retirement of Asad Umer,
Muhammad Aliuddin Ansari has assumed
the charge as CEO of the Engro
Corporation.
Ansari was the CEO of Dewan Drilling,
Pakistan’s first independent Oil & Gas drilling
Company.
He is a graduate of Business Administration
with a specialization in Finance &
Investments from UK.
On 17th April Ansari, received call from the
Chairman BOD of Engro informing him that after
Asad Umar Khalid Mansoor a senior Executive had
also resigned. Soon after, much to his surprise He
was offered the position of running Engro,
initially he declined, but later when it was the
unanimous view of the BOD, He accepted the
offer. When he joined, there was a shock factor
in the company, people were getting a bit wild in
their ideas as to what will happen but the real
job in hand was to fill in gaps and ensure that
right people were in right jobs.
LEADERSHIP STYLE:
I believe in consensus, participative and
collective decision-making.
In my career, joining Engro was a difficult
decision having achieved my dream of being
an entrepreneur.
Engro Corp posted a record 2013
consolidated profit after tax of Rs. 8,183
million vs. depressed profit after tax of Rs.
1,333 million in 2012. The company achieved
PKR 155,360 million revenue in 2013 vs. PKR
125,151 million in 2012.
Asad Umar’s Vision and Leadership had made the ENGRO Corporation
one of the best and most successful Diversifications ever in the
history of Pakistan.
But the sudden retirement could trigger drastic changes and may
cause losses to Engro and may affect the performance of Engro but
the right Decision and Headhunting process of Board of Directors and
successful planning and changes made and managed by ANSARI help
Engro to get record profits and Ansari become a better
replacement of Asad Umar.
Asad umar’s Transformational and Ansari’s accidental and planned
change helped Engro to sail through rough seas.
