With the theme, “Sharpening Language Skills for Global Citizenship”, an array of activities were conducted to promote and appreciate the use of the second language. The event was highlighted by the search for the Mr. and Ms. Language Arts 2013, administered by Mr. Marco D. Me- duranda, Mrs. Laarni M. Bonus, and Mrs. Mona Liza F. Adriano. This search aims to discover talented students to hone their capabilities and enhance their confi- dence and competence in speaking the English language to be globally com- petitive individuals. The English Festival is a three-day annual event showcasing the stu- dents talents and skills in writing, dancing, theatre arts, and other social skills/ interaction with their peers. Other activities/contests were Quiz Bee, Slogan Making, Poster Making, Oratorical, Declamation, Essay Writing, Spelling Bee, Photojournalism, and Cooking Contest. The event was made possible through the concerted efforts of the Eng- lish Department teach- ers, led by their head Mr. Mario M. Siason. These activities were prepared/coordinated by the officers and members of the Eng- lish Club with their ad- viser, Mrs. Jean Ca- tandijan. NNHS celebrates English Festival 2013 Spelling Bee The spelling bee was held at BES building, participated by 8 students from the 1st and 2nd year. The spelling bee master was Mrs. Josephine O. Fuentez. Winners of the said activity were Danilo Navarro, VII-EC (1st place), John Carl Santiago, VII-Quartz (2nd place), Kenneth Solanoy VII-EC (3rd place).

Team Quiz Bee Team quiz bee started at exactly eleven in the morning held at Computer Laboratory, Sandoval Building. The contest was participated by 5 groups consisting of 5 students from the 3rd & 4th year level. The questions on Philippine literature, Asian Literature, World Literature, Greek Mythology and Grammar were asked by the quiz master Mrs. Kristine R. Pernia. The questions were divided in three stages, easy, difficult and average. And at the end, three groups won their proper places. John Matthew Zarate, Micaella Joy Leonud, Jayraldine Giducos, John Carlo Santos and

Rossanna Tengson from IV-EC won 1st place, Quenny Jane Balaoro, Raiza Marie Medina,Darlene De Cas-tro,Kathleen Obrado,Harlene Feleces from III-EC won the 2nd place and Patrisha Shayra Sulit, Robert Macara-sig Jr., Roxette Abalos , Kimberly Soriaga and Jayvee Macalinao won the 3rd place.

Oration Once more students of Navotas National Highschool had proved their worth and their ways of speaking our second language with diction and sincerity as they join the Oratorical Contest . The contest has be-gan at 1:00 pm in the afternoon at the Japan Building , 2nd floor . With the theme, “Sharpening Language Skills for Global Citizenship” which they will compose a piece of essay from it. The said event was participated from se-lected students from 3rd and 4th year Level . Each partici-pants had delivered their speeches with conviction . Winners were 1st Place Christian Lacza (III-EC), 2nd Place Patrisha Sulit (IV-Humility); 3rd Place Rodrigo De Asis (IV-EC) and Liezel Espino (IV-Honesty).

Slogan and Poster Making The on the spot poster making and on the spot slogan writing con-test was held on the 1st day of the English Festival – Jan 21. The Poster Mak-ing & Slogan writing was headed by Mr. Manolo Lobedica and Mr. Canor Aguilo, which was participated by students from different year levels. Each participant The winners for the poster making contest were Angel Mae Belvin, VII-diamond (1st Place); Addie Rafaella Honorio, II-EC (2nd Place); Aiko Delos Santos, IV-EC (3rd Place).

The winner for the slogan making contest were Reanna M. Teodosio, IV-EC (1st Place); Addie Rafaella Honorio, II-EC (2nd Place); John Carlo Bruma, II-EC (3rd Place).

Declamation The Declamation contest was held on the 1st day. It was administered by Mrs. Raquel R. Catamio, which was participated by 6 participants from the 1st and 2nd year level. Each participant was given a piece with the title Lithorah( from the Hebrews Bible). Everyone was given enough time to present and recite the piece with proper conviction, actions, and proper expres-sion for “Lithorah”. This is to enhance their talent and skills in pre-senting themselves with the use of the second language. Winners of the event were ,Shana Nicole Belarmino VII-EC (1st place), Claire Domingo, II-EC (2nd place), Alexis Acusin (VII-EC).

Essay Writing The Essay Writing contest was held last January 21, at the Sandoval Building. Headed by Mrs. Ruby S. Aguas, It was participated by different year level. Every partici-pant must give their opinion, expression and idea about the theme given to them. Giselle Falcutila IV-EC won the first place, Christine Jocson 7-EC won the second place and An-gelou De Guia III-EC won the third place.

Photo Journalism On January 22, 2013, Photojournalism was administered by Mr. Canor P. Aguilo participated by 7 students from different year levels. Each contestant was given 30 minutes to capture their best shot about nature within the school’s vicinity. At the end of judging with its respective criteria, Leah Angela Matoguina won 1st Place, while Aubrey Mae Mariano got 2nd Place and John Carl R. Alag, IV EC got 3rd Place. The Judges were Mrs. Mona Liza F. Adriano, The Net Adviser, Mr. Rolando Delgado, Head, TLE Department and Mr. Rommel Peñaranda, TLE teacher.

Live Cooking Demo The Live Cooking Demo was one of the most awaited events in the festival because of its uniqueness not only for the teachers but also for the students/participants. The Live Cooking Demo not only encourage students to show how good they are in our second language but also to show how good they are in cooking . The event was participated by the students from differ-ent levels , each showcasing their own talent not only to impress our judges but also to prove that they are good in this field . The criteria for judging are as follows : 30% fluency in speaking the second language ,20% cooking demo , 25% taste and another 25% for plating and garnishing . Winners were; 1st Place: Charlyn Joyce Dayto , John Matthew Zarate , Micaella Joy Leonud (IV-EC), 2nd Place: Elisiah Fuertes , Elmira Espinosa , Sheila Dequila (III-Quezon) , And 3rd Place: Maria Patricia Eunice Navos , Marjoe Albano, Marie Polintan. Everyone enjoyed the food-tasting part of the event.

Mister And Miss Language Arts 2013 Crismel Dara Tengson, IV-EC and Aaron Jowell Perez, IV-Obedience were proclaimed Mr. and Ms. Language Arts 2013, a search for the model English language learner in NNHS, pro-moting confidence and competence in English communication skills. With the theme “Sharpening Language Skills for Global Citizen-ship”, the search aims to discover talented students to hone their capabilities and enhance their confidence and competence in speaking the English language to be globally competitive indi-viduals. The candidates ramped bubbly and gracefully in their sportswear and gown attire. They delivered their answers with ease and fluency in the Question & Answer por-tion of the competition. Winners for 1st Runner-Up were Camille Jerica Goli, IV-Humility and John Carlo Santos, IV-EC. 2nd

Runner-Up winners were Apple Francisco, III-Bonifacio and Dindong Serrano, IV-Humility. For the special awards: Camille Jerica Goli (IV-Humility) bagged The Ms. Congeniality, Ms. Talent, and Ms. Photogenic awards. Dominique Trinidad (IV-EC) was awarded Mr. Congeniality. Mr Photogenic was Can-dido Serrano ((IV-EC). John Carlo Santos (IV-EC) won the Mr. Talent Award. While the People’s Choice Award went to Aaron Perez and Crismel Dara Tengson. Seven pairs from the juniors and the seniors competed in the beauty, wit, and talent tilt. The candidates were judged by their graceful-ness and wit. Judges consisted of Mrs. Marita Aquino, MAPEH Depart-ment Head, Ms. Ann Laura Sengco, Values Education Department Head, and Mr. Rolando Delgado, TLE Department Head. The Q & A portion was administered by Mr. Marco D. Meduranda, the event’s Master of Ceremo-nies.
