How to Sketch a Kitchen Utensil?
Having trouble on sketching? To know one's own strength and the
enemy's is the sure way to victory. So what is sketching? Sketching is a trends of
drawing in the last decade have included concerns about colours, style,
expression and speed. Sketching is about eye-hand coordination to see, observe
and then record. Why sketching? For my knowledge sketching has no
boundaries not even right or wrong, as it become a rapid way to jot down
inspiration which can be further detailing into a complete design. Getting a start is
hard for those who is not good in art but don’t just sit there looking at a blank
white paper as if you fervent wishes could make it appear sketches itself.
First thing first, reaching out for solid thing is a must before sketching it
out. Picking one of the utensil in the kitchen try to understand it well in order to
compose an attractive sketch. Post it in different ways and angles, viewing from
various sight whether it is from far away or an inch to the object. Choosing the
most attractive way of look then freeze it that way like pressing a pause button on
a remote control so it won’t be moving around. Nowadays, everyone had their
own smart phone with super high definition camera attach to it so the best way is
to shoot a photo of it so that the details, the lighting and the shading will never
change just in case of an “earthquake” happen.
Before the actual sketching begins, the basic tools and materials required
must be assembled. What do you need in order to sketch out the object? The
papers choice is important for a good sketch. For beginner I would recommend to
use a standard plain A4 paper instead of drawing paper, reason is A4 paper is
way cheaper than the drawing paper and easier to erase once thing goes South.
The advantage is not just because of the cost but because you can work with
one sheet at a time. It is a lot harder to learn sketching on a tablet or sketchbook
if you have never done so. A single flat sheet allows the beginning artist to rest
the palm on the drawing surface. The table also serves as a security anchor and
allows for better balancing of the hand and prevents shaking. The surface of the
paper is also a key if you sketch on a rough paper surface the pencil will be wear
out very quick and it so rough that the pencil has a very hard time navigating it.
Pencils are also critical to the sketches, for a beginner tips using a 2B or
HB pencil would be the best for them. It’s marking as medium in darkness and
the lead has the moderate wear which doesn’t need frequent sharpening. It also
provide a friendly touch compare to Rectangular pencil. It is the perfect pencil for
the beginners. Never using a mechanical pencil for sketching because the thin
lead could not present the effect the pencil could do. Indeed, eraser and
sharpener are the requirement it does not matter whether it is an electronic pencil
sharpener or a small pocket knife. Even a sand paper can also be used to sharp
the tip of the pencil. I am not a fan of eraser I rather prefer sketching over the
mistakes on them to create something new and non-static. In case you need one
use a soft eraser that can simply pick up the unwanted sketches. A smooth paper
is very unforgiving and any attempt to erase can easily lead to disaster which is
why I dislike an eraser.
Throughout all the selection and trying section here comes the real deal,
sketching are depends on many factor examples like skills, type of papers,
choice of pencil, movement of hand, way of gripping the pencil and mode of the
person. There are many different ways to hold the pencil but the key word to
remember while sketching is “relax”. Avoid holding tight and firm as you were
writing by contrast sketching grip is comparatively looser and easier. Hold the
pencil approximately 5cm to 6cm away from the tip of it. Use 3 fingers to grip the
pencil which is the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger. Gripping the
pencil by using index finger and thumb to stabilize the pencil and to prevent it
from slipping out while the pencil resting to the middle finger. Lines and strokes
can be drawn by the gentle motion of pushing and pulling the pencil with the
fingers in this gripping way. A sketch without the strokes and lines are plain and
boring. However, control the pressure via the distance between gripping and the
tip of the pencil. Fixing the finger grip while moving the wrist would also create
variance on the strokes and lines. Pressure also shows the shadowing and
lighting of the sketch making it more realistic and detailing of the object or
buildings. Texture detail are also important because not everything in the world is
just a flat surface. On texture sketching also show one’s mode and feeling
towards the object in the duration of sketching. Width of the strokes and lines
must be differentiate to show the object example like the grass and the building
for the grass would be using more thick and width blanking space as a pathway
and the building must be thin and dark so it displayed as the main element of the
sketch. Completion by shading and lighting control and always remember to keep
the sketch away from any high friction object to prevent damaging the sketching.
For beginner like me this sketching process takes approximately minimum
4 to 5 hours and still having problem on some of the part although it is not perfect
but practice make perfect, never give up and do not be down just because you
used more than one paper to sketch the object. It is the process through thorns
and mountain but once you get through these obstacles you are then in the
paradise you never been before. The happiness, relief, satisfaction and the
experience it is worthwhile to sketch again, again and again. (1037 words)
