NEW RADLICE | CITY BATHCOMPLEX OF BUILDINGS & DETAILED PROPOSAL OF THE BATH

Graduation project | Jan Jehlík Design Studio | FA CTU | 2012

Radlice district offers a very attractive undeveloped area in the inner part of the city. It’s easy accesible by metro and tram for a few minutes from the city center. And it’s surrounded by green hills as well. The location is ideal for new housing and company headquarters. Thousands of people pass through there every day when they go towards the new CSOB headquarter. However the area doesn’t provide adequate facilities for them or even for the locals.

The topic of my diploma project is a regeneration of the Radlice district and reviving the memory of the place that has been built up for the centuries. The area should become the full-scale site with a broader urban meaning. Subsequently the aim of the project is a proposal of complex of buildings with more detailed design of city bath. The municipal bath offers rest and relaxation for the inhabitants of Prague.

SITE| CHARACTERISTIC OF RADLICE VALLEY

Clenched Radlicke valley is difficult to characterize as an urban whole. From the city center it has always been separated by the Smichovske railway station and today by the four streams of the city circle. Transportation services are provided by trams and metro stations Radlická and Jinonice. Along the valley winds largely oversized communication of Radlická street. High above it, on the northern slope there is the railway line of Prague Semmering. On the opposite slope there is located the Malvazinský Cemetery full of beautiful trees with dominant Saint James and Philip Church. Around its walls there are located pre-war villas and several blocks of flats.Directly opposite the site of CSOB headquarter there is Radlická indoor swimming pool. Behind it a tennis hall and playground and solitary objects hardly definable filling. With its green slopes the Radlické valley remains a poetic place, hiding itselfselves in the nostalgia of bygone naively optimistic leap in many directions.

>> The spa provides its visitors darkened intimate atmosphere where they can rest in peace. But closed facades should not have a negative impact on pedestrians in the streets, that’s why they are surrounded by other services related to the spa (hairdressing, manicures etc) and other types of services. The spa itself is hidden away in the bowels of the new block. In some places, however, peek out of the bath and give the opportunity to people what is hidden inside.

>> The main entrance from the square is just like all the spa recessed into the surrounding buildings, so evocative of the atmosphere of an intimate environment. The main spa areais organized around outdoor patio and offers a variety of relaxing baths, whirlpools, waterfalls as well as a smaller pool for swimming. Furthermore, a number of saunas and steam rooms with different temperatures, relaxation area, where it is possible to relax in the darkness with sounds of music. Outdoor patio is open year-round and offers a outdoor relax in the pool or cooling during the winter. Finally, the main compartment follows a section offering services like massages, ham-mam, and Arabic yoga center.

>> Interiors and facades are made from the exposed concrete colored in earthy tonesfollowing the peaceful atmosphere and referring to the tradition of Arab and Roman baths.Underground floor of megablock hides technological facilities of the spa, central house boiler and engine ventilation room for the entire block, as well as common underground garages.

by STREAM by KLÁROV PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN

5th year | Project of realization | Jan Jehlík Design Studio | FA CTU | 2011

199 streams flow through the territory of Prague. Most of them are in poor condition and knowl-edge of them is small. One of the streams is called Brusnice, today unobtrusive watercourse re-sulting in Břevnov running through the very historical center and draining into the Moldava River in Mala Strana. Due to poor interventions in history Brusnice is now largely hidden in tubes under the ground and its basin is broken.

In the project “Rivers for Life” is performed a revitalization of several Prague streams. Among the planned projects is the Brusnice’s revitalization - opening parts in tube and restore water resources. My proposal allows the state after this revitalization.

Klárov is a busy square near the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, the Old Town and other important places. It is a place with a high incidence of people and heavy traffic, which, however, people just pass through. Only small part of them stopp there to sit and admire the magnificent views that Klárov offers. The proposal makes Klárov to become attractive public space for people and not to be just a “pass-through” point.

NEW IMPORTANCE OF BRUSNICE STREAM?

>> brings pedestrian to underutilized parts of the square

>> attracts to the newly created access to the Moldava River

>> gives to the Klarov Square an exceptional character in Prague

>> Based on already regenerated part in Jelenni prikop and builds on it

Stream flowing to Klárov revives the space and also serves as an “attraction”on the way to the river and the Jelení příkop. In the lower part of the square it cuts into the ground, creating a bed of the Vltava river and small intimate spaces that invite you to stop and rest.

The proposal includes new building, which will serve as a multifunctional house providing space for café, restaurant, public toilets and tourist information on the ground floor, crafts gallery and offices on the top floors.

The proposed materials, lighting and furniture complement the idea of concept and help to create a pleasant public space. The aim was to underline the character of the place in the historical center of the city. So there are used typical and local materials for paving (granite and sandstone). In places of busy movement the creek is below ground, but most of it’s led on the surface at 25-30 cm deep canal.

MANZANARES HOUSE RENOVATION & PUBLIC SPACE IN MADRID

4th year | Francisco Arqués Design Studio| E.T.S.A.M. | 2010

Designed area is located in southern part of the Spanish metropolis Madrid and it’s one of its less attractive neighborhoods. The current problem with high traffic city solves with proposal of tunnel. Years of heavy reconstruction and neglect of public spaces and existing buildings reflected in their impoverished state.

The living conditions of the local inhabitants should be improved by proposal of reconstruction of residential buildings and revitalization of public space around them. Houses are located very close to the football stadium Vicente Calderon, from which they are separated by a river Manzanares, a promenade and a quiet road. The basic idea is to facilitate the access to the river for residents, revival facades and change the layout to attractive housing. In addition, to take advantage of the space on the roofs of houses for additional housing units.

For this change I used the principle of rotating boxes hung on the skeletal construc-tion system of the house. Box as a basic module in various combinations creates a vari-able disposition, which traced the facade while forming deluxe accommodation on the roof. Rotation boxes enables better orientation of windows and offers attractive views than towards the stadium on the opposite shore.

PARK BY THE RIVER MANYANARES

Green and water areas are desirable in the middle of hot Madrid. The area has great potential to offer to the local inhabitants a new park along the river Manzanares in close proximity to their homes.

Existing terrain, which is elevated above the road and cut off from houses is a newly reduced and curled. Then it’s becoming more acces-sible to residents. The road is newly preserved only as a pedestrian zone with restricted access of vehicles.

To increase the attractiveness of the park there are piers built on the wa-terfront using the same system of rotating blocks and rectangles. Piers offer space for relaxing by the water, a playground for children. There is also a café with outdoor seating.

Newly planted vegetation in the park is irrigated with water from the river.

KAMPA * KIDS CHILDREN COMMUNITY CENTER Bachelor’s project | Ján Stempel Design Studio| FA CTU | 2009

Community center in Kampa is open to children of all ages and their parents, who can spend their leisure time there. The concept of small wooden houses reminding fishing village is based on the features of each object and refers to the wooden rafters building that used to stand on Kampa Island. Entry to the center is placed a mirror from the entry to Sova’s Mills, and creates an interesting public space close to the river and park.Orientation in the center is facilitated by axis formed of views to the river and towards the park. The axis are directed to playroom fand teenager’s house on one side and into cafe, cinema and workshops on the other side.Individual houses are connected by glass bridges that facilitate movement between them in all weather conditions and makes it as comfortable as possible. Terrace located on the roof of the cinema house offers wonderful views of the historical part of city.Construction of houses is brick wall, facades are clad with wooden battens of local materials. Impression of disparate structures arising spontaneously is underscored by diversity of color solutions and kind of wood paneling. The whole “village” is surrounded by original historical wall that protects the center emotionally and against the real flood. Some roofs are covered with an extensive green that apply visually when they are viewed from the park and terraces of Sova’s Mills and help integrate the village to the park.

VÍTKOVICETOWN IN THE CITY

5th year | Jan Šépka Design Studio | FA CTU | 2010

At present time there is a broken and non-functional complex of mines and ironworks in the Lower Vítkovice. With its rich history this place is a strong symbol for the residents of Vítkovice and for the whole Ostrava as well. After a closure of the ironworks, the territory became an impassable and desolate area close the city center.

The aim of the proposal is to fill this hole by a new district of the city and also to help the residents of Ostrava to eliminate their biggest problems - high unemployment, lack ofquality parks, fragmented educational facilities.

The concept is inspired by the mining environment (composition of rocks, system of mines, shafts and seams) and processing of iron, which are the typical for the location.Another source of inspiration is zoned city, which is designed as a set of functional zones, among which there are the most economical and rational bonds.

The proposal uses positive aspects of zoned city and verifies the possibility of building up the huge area of Vitkovice Ironworks. The new district is divided into quiet and busier zones. Contents of the individual areas are mixed but they complement each other. Due to this, it offers the broad range of environments.

SITE

48|49

CONCEPT| INSPIRATION BY MINNING ENVIROMENT

SITE PLAN

The proposal aims to provide to find a new life for the residents in the form of assurance of quality education for children, the possibility of retraining and employment.

The existing compound of Vitkovice Ironworks is involved in the design too. Its attractive cultural objects have functions such as mine’s museum, galleries, libraries and theaters. Between them through the tourist trail, which allows you to retain a vivid memory of the history of this place. The historic area followed functionally Production Zone of industrial halls, which offers a new environment and good conditionsfor the retraining of former miners and creating new jobs.

The industrial area is penetrated with the campus of the University of Mines. They complement each other, mainly to gain experience for the students in industrial companies and vice versa classroom for retrain-ing of miners. From the east side these zones follow a green water-proof membrane with the main tram line. It separates industrial area and the zone of housing which is completed by municipal facilities. Living in the location is very attractive thanks the nearness of the river and greenareas. It also includes all categories of student dormitories and starter housing apartments to a higher category.

OPAVA COMPETITIONELDERLY PEOPLE HOUSE

Opava , CZ | leading by Fred Veerman & Jeroen Van Hettema | 2012

The site of future pension for the elderly is located in the northeastern part of Opava, 1.5 km away from the city center. Existing buildings as well as a newly designed building on the opposite side of the solved land have tendention to form large impenetrable block whose dimensions represent a new scale for its surroundings. We think that this trend should change.

We propose to create a volume with appropriately corresponding height (4-5 storeys) and form a diverse and rugged building, without losing its integrity. In addition, we try to avoid financially demanding construction of the underground floors with technical facilities and underground parking. This will also avoid the problematic connection of a ramp to the street. We tried to spread the program of pension throughout the land. Flats gain optimal orientation to the sun bending the building mass. At the same time we create a more closed character semi private court and private space of communal garden. Passage of the yard with the urban character to the garden of private character is left free to form a loose coupling between the city and the building.

We believe that this urban intervention could be applied to the development of the entire city block and create a better scale and more diversity in the urban area.

CONCEPT| COMPLETE THE BLOCK

We propose a relatively strict division of public and private spaces. All flatsare situated on the second floor and above. Three different sides of orientation of the building make basically three different types of apartments. They all have a kitchenette, bathroom and living room.

Flats are designed as barrier-free. Thewindows sill is reduced, allowing a good viewon the street or garden for the residents. As a private outdoor spaces serve loggia, which also guarantees the shading of the interior in the summer. In winter, they can be again transformed by folding windows in private conservatories and contribute to good insulation from the cold outdoors.

Parking, part of cellar boxes, common technical facilities and meeting rooms are located on the ground floor and provide a solid base of the building.Lounge is situated in the center of the building and is accessible from the yard and garden, but also through the inner passage. Different heights of buildings forming the roof terrace, which is open to residents of the house.

FAMILY HOUSE

Braškov - Valdek | utility area 150 m² | site area 1000 m² | 2012

Braškov village is situated about 4 km south of Kladno, just 18 km from the border of Prague. The population is approximately 970 inhabitants. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside, fields and forests, which is rightly called the “Gateway Křivoklát forests”. In 2010 there was complete revitalization of public spaces of the village. Newly landscaped places are square and ponds in Braškov and Valdek, sidewalks, roads and streets, play-grounds etc. The village is full of cultural and sport activities.

Client’s wish is a medium-sized house, which will have everything what a young family needs. So a large open living area with easy access to the garden with swimming pool, ample storage space and a covered outdoor seating near the house.

According to character of surrounding buildings the shape of the house is designed for simple rectangular floor plan complete with stone volume garage and outdoor seating. The roof is saddle just like the majority of houses in Braškov. The house is located at the northern side to let the garden the most sunny and accessible from the living room ori-ented to the south.

The volume of covered outdoor seating passes in front of the house and lines the glazed side of living room, so to avoid overheating the interior by southern summer sun.
