SEAT BELTS (continued)The following information applies to both the vehicle's front and rear seat belts.

No adjustments may be made to the component parts of the restraint system (belts, seats and their mountings)originally fitted. For special applications (e.g. fitting child seats) contact your RENAULT Dealer.

Do not use devices which produce any slack in the belts (e.g. clothes pegs, clips, etc.): a seat belt which is worn tooloosely risks causing injury in the event of an accident.

Never wear the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back.

Never use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your lap with your seat beltaround them.

The belt should never be twisted.

Seat belts should be replaced after a serious accident. Likewise, replace your seat belts as soon as they show any signsof wear.

When refitting the rear bench seat, take care that the seat belts are correctly positioned so that they can be usedproperly.

If necessary, readjust the position and tightness of the belt.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are: pretensioners, chest and lap belt force limiters, driver and passenger airbags.

These systems are designed tooperate independently or togetherin the event of a front, side, or rearimpact.Depending on the force of theimpact the system may activate:- seat belt locking;- the lap belt pretensioner to keep

the occupant in their seat, the lowvolume front airbag and the forcelimiter,

    - the large volume airbag.PretensionersWith the ignition switched on, if thevehicle is subjected to a significantfrontal impact the system may, depending on the severity ofimpact, trigger piston 1 whichinstantly retracts the belt. The pretensioners hold the seat beltagainst the occupant's body, holding the occupant more securelyagainst the seat, thus increasing theseat belt's efficiency.

After an accident, havethe entire restraintsystem checked

No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bereused on any other vehicle, even if identical.

To avoid premature triggering ofthe system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner and airbagsystem.

Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensionerand airbag gas generators.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)Chest and lap belt force limitersAbove a certain severity of impact, this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

Driver and passenger airbagsFitted to the driver's and passengerside. The presence of this equipment isindicated by the word Airbag onthe steering wheel and thedashboard (airbag zone A) and alabel on the lower part of thewindscreen or on the sun visor. Each airbag system consists of:- an airbag and gas generator fitted

    to the steering wheel for the driverand in the dashboard for the frontpassenger;

    - an intelligent computer for bothsystems, which includes animpact sensor and a monitorcontrolling the electrical triggersystem for the gas generator.

    - A single warning light onthe instrument panel.

The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the airbaginflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an airbag isrequired, it will inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin or other problems.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)OperationThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.In a severe frontal impact, theairbags inflate rapidly, cushioningthe impact of the driver's head andchest against the steering wheel andthe front passenger's head againstthe dashboard. The airbags thendeflate immediately so that thepassengers are not hindered in anyway from leaving the vehicle.

Special feature of the frontairbagThe airbag can be triggered in twodifferent ways, depending on theforce of the impact:- small volume airbag, this is the

first stage of operation;- large volume airbag, the straps are

torn in order to allow the airbag toinflate to a higher volume (in theevent of more severe impacts).

Operating faultsWarning light 1 lights up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds. If it does not light up when theignition is switched on, or comes onwhen the engine is running, there isa fault in the system.Consult your RENAULT Dealer assoon as possible. METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)All of the warnings below are given so that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to preventthe risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

Warnings concerning the drivers airbag Do not modify the steering wheel or the steering wheel cushion. Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.

Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the steering wheel boss. The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel from the RENAULT Network). When driving, do not sit too close to the steering wheel. Sit with your arms slightly bent (see the information on

Adjusting your driving position in Section 1). This will allow sufficient space for the airbag to deploy correctly andbe fully effective.

Warnings concerning the passenger airbag Do not attach or glue any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the dashboard in the proximity of the

airbag housing. Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger (pet, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.). The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there is a risk that serious injuries may be

sustained. In general, parts of the body should be kept away from the dashboard (knees, hands, head etc.) The passenger airbags should be reactivated as soon as the child seat is removed, to ensure the protection of the front

passenger in the event of an impact.

A REAR-FACING CHILD/BABY SEAT MUST NOT BE FITTED TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNLESS THEADDITIONAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS, I.E. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG, ARE DEACTIVATED. (Refer to theinformation on Deactivation of passenger airbags in Section 1).

RESTRAINT DEVICES IN ADDITION TO THE REAR SEAT BELTSDepending on the vehicle, theseinclude: Seat belt pretensioners

    integrated into the inertia reels.

    Force limiter.

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact. There are two scenarios, dependingon the force of the impact:- protection is provided by the belt

only;- the pretensioner is triggered to

take up the slack in the seat belt.

Rear seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.If the vehicle is subjected to a severefrontal impact, a device retracts theseat belt, pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and thusimproving its effectiveness.

Have the entire restraintsystem checked followingan accident.

No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bereused on any other vehicle, evenan identical vehicle.

SIDE PROTECTION DEVICESSide airbagsThis airbag may be fitted to each ofthe front seats and is activated at thesides of the seats (door side) toprotect the occupants in the event ofa severe side impact.

These airbags operatethrough slits in the frontseatbacks (door side):never insert any objects

    in these slits.

Curtain airbagsThese are airbags may be fittedalong the top of each side of thevehicle and which are triggeredalong the front and rear sidewindows to protect the passengersin the event of a severe side impact.

A marking on the windscreeninforms you of the presence ofadditional means of restraint(airbags, pretensioners, etc.) inthe passenger compartment.

Warnings concerning thelateral airbag Fitting seat covers: seats

equipped with an airbagrequire covers specificallydesigned for your vehicle.Contact your RENAULT Dealerto find out if these covers may bepurchased from RENAULToutlets. The use of any coversother than those designed foryour vehicle (and includingthose designed for anothervehicle) may affect the operationof the airbags and reduce yourprotection.

Do not place any accessories, objects or even pets between theseatback, the door and theinternal fittings. Do not cover theseatback with any items such asclothes or accessories. This mayprevent the airbag fromoperating correctly or causeinjury when the airbag isdeployed.

ADDITIONAL RESTRAINT DEVICESAll the warnings below are given so that, if the airbag is activated, it is not obstructed in any way and also to prevent therisk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbags and seat belts are integral partsof the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also increase the risk ofminor superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed, although such minor injuries are alwayspossible with airbags.

If the vehicle should overturn or in the event of a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are notalways triggered. Shocks to the underbody of the vehicle, from pavements, potholes, stones etc. can all trigger thesesystems.

No work or modification whatsoever may be carried out on any part of the driver or passenger airbag system (airbag, pretensioner, computer, wiring harness, etc), except by qualified RENAULT Network personnel.

To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the airbag system.

As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, stolen orbroken into.

When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.

When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraints forchildren and babies. In Europe children under 10 yearsof age(1) must be seated in anapproved safety device which issuitable for the weight and size ofthe child. The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after January1992 offer a level of safety muchgreater than for restraints with typeapproval before that date.It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichrepresents the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.Refer to the Child safety equipmentbooklet available from theRENAULT Network to choose theseat suited to your child andrecommended for your vehicle.

Remember that a collision at 30 mph(50 km/h) is the same as falling adistance of 10 metres. Expressed inother terms, transporting a childwithout a restraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on afourth-floor balcony without railings.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another pas-

senger in the vehicle. If a head-on impact occurs at30 mph (50 km/h) a child weighing30 kg will be transformed into amissile equivalent to one tonne:you will find it impossible to holdthe child, even if you yourself arewearing a belt.It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your lap. Neveruse the belt for more than oneperson at the same time.

There are some passenger seats onwhich the installation of child seatsis forbidden. To find the authorised seats andtypes of child seats that can beinstalled in each of the authorisedseats, refer to the table in thefollowing pages.

Installing a child seat in the frontseat (if installation is permitted)If fitted to the passenger seat, carryout the following adjustments:- move the passenger seat as far

back as possible,- tilt back the seatback slightly,- raise the headrest to its highest

setting or remove it if necessary,- move the seat belt height control

    to the low position.

Installing a child seat in the rearside seat (if installation ispermitted)- raise the headrest or remove it if

necessary,- position the bench seat as

recommended in the table on thefollowing page.

    (1) You must always comply with thelaws of the country in which you aretravelling. They may be different tothe guidelines in this handbook.
