Symbolic Self Portrait

• nCreate a self portrait which incorporates 5 personal symbols that represent things about you, your character and personality. Use a person, place, thing, and event, plus one more symbol that are also symbolic to the ideas you’re trying to convey about yourself.

Write an explanation of each of your five symbols, including how and why you chose those symbols, and what they convey about you. (individually for each symbol, and collectively for the overall portrait.)

Interpretive(Example: Picture of me and a guitar.)

Symbols apply to both the culture at large and personally and show highly thoughtful selection (Universal & personal) (Example: I used a guitar to represent music, a concept that transcends time, space, culture and language; and I want to communicate those concepts myself.)

Symbols apply to culture at large and show thoughtful selection (Universal)(Example: I used a guitar because it can represent many emotional states; and it reflects the different emotional states people experience, thus people can not be simply defined.)

Symbols are just personal and show some thought in selection(Example: I used a guitar because playing it represents happiness, a quality I want to contribute to society.)

Symbols are either personal or universal, but show little thought in selection (Example: I used a guitar because I like music.)

Craftsmanship Craftsmanship is excellent and inventive use of five symbolsAll areas are carefully and consistently renderedGreat care is shown in the presentation of the work

Craftsmanship is mostly consistent and adequate for four symbols. Most areas a carefully and consistently renderedGood care is shown in the presentation of the work

Craftsmanship is inconsistent and semi-adequate of three symbols. Some areas are carefully rendered; others are notPresentation of the work is inconsistent, with some careless areas.

Craftsmanship is mostly lacking and ineffective for three or less symbols.Rendering is attempted, but is generally sloppyPresentation is generally careless

Integration All Symbols are effectively integrated into one overall portrait / with all of the background space.

Most symbols are effectively integrated with of the background space.

Some symbols are effectively integrated with some of the background space.

Individual symbols appear to float in the background.

A moth? Why would I choose to represent myself as a moth? Several reasons. For a while now, I’ve associated myself with butterflies. I’ve worked a lot with them in my photography as well as my traditional work. I love their beauty; I love their symbol of change and growth. But more than that, they eventually became a very personal symbol to me. Butterflies, to me, are my sense of creativity, they are my freedom, and they represent my artistic voice and my drive. They are my inspiration and my muse. So, when I was brainstorming and telling my amazing boyfriend to tell me what I should do, he mentioned my butterflies. And I thought about it. It would work, but it needed a bit of change. Moths have the same symbolic meaning as butterflies, but a bit different. They fly in the night, they are…darker in a way. While I embrace life (or try) and the beauty that comes with it, my emotions and personality are not as bubbly and bright as butterflies often show up to be. I am a self proclaimed pessimist.A moth is a creature every searching for something, ever seeking the light (knowledge, perhaps).

Ms. C’s Symbolic Self Portrait1. Person: J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

series. Tolkien inspired my love of the fantasy genre and elves. I admire his creativity, family values, and knowledge of language and culture.

2. Place: A comfy, quiet, techie bedroom I could live in forever! I love to sleep in late. I love big fluffy pillows and heavy, squishy blankets. I love dim rooms with big TVs and big windows with heavy drapes. This room is perfect!

3. Thing: A magnet that proclaims, “Family Matters.” Simply, family is the most important thing in life; they come first and are always influential in my life. I also live with the Japanese acknowledgement that anyone close to you, who influences and loves you, and you them, are also your family…extended, but more than just a friend.

4. Event: P.A.X. – an annual technology, gaming, and net-comic event. This event captures so much of what I value and invest my time in daily. It involves new technologies being created and used, as well as all sorts of hobbies and games that I play with friends and on my own. It also presents a counterpoint; something I hate: crowds.

5. Extra: A poster of Disney’s original Peter Pan cartoon motion picture. This character and story was my favorite as a child, and remains one of my favorites as an adult. I fully encourage the idea that Peter Pan represents, which is no never completely grow up. Wendy always kept a piece of herself attached to Peter and her time in Neverland. I agree with J.M. Barrie (and Charlie Todd) that adults should always keep some fun in their lives!
