INTRODUCTION
In recent years, as English has spread to all corners of the world,
there has been a proliferation of English for specific purposes.
There are now varieties of English taught for all manner of
situations, from legal and medical English to English for military
purposes and law enforcement. There is business English, English
for academic purposes, English for tourism, and the list goes on.
English is the world language, and it must meet the various and
complex needs of the world.
Until now, however, there has been a notable absence in the field
of the different varieties of English being taught—the kind of
essential English needed for emergency, life-threateningcircumstances, a basic English for a situation that requires people
to communicate in order to survive one of the most dramatic
events in human history.
An alien invasion
Humans have long wondered if we are alone in the universe. The
day we get a definite answer to that question might not be when
we discover alien life, but when it discovers us. The idea of an
alien invasion has been part of our collective conscious for
hundreds of years, but how prepared are you for when it
happens? Will you be able to communicate when the situation
calls for it?
This short guide is an essential phrase book for the kind of English
you might need to survive an alien invasion. You’ll find units to
help you initialize contact, describe the alien ship, call for
reinforcements, meet an alien leader, and escape from an alien
abduction. Our hope is that this manual will help us all be more
prepared to meet other life forms and coordinate a response.
THE AUTHORS
Robert Campbell has written graded readers about
extraterrestrials (Next Door , Helbling), time travel (The
Time Capsule, Helbling), and the supernatural (Owl Hall ,
Macmillan). Obsessed by the science-fiction genre from a very
early age, Robert has created many classroom activities related to
aliens and alien abduction for the magazine iT’s for Teachers.
Lindsay Clandfield has taught English to people who
claim to have been abducted by aliens in Mexico, Spain,
the UK, and Canada. Although he has never seen an
alien or alien ship before, he knows it’s probably just a question of
time. He also has over twenty years of experience fighting aliens
in various video games.
Lindsay and Robert are also the brains behind the first ebook in
the Extreme Language Teaching series: English for the Zombie
Apocalypse.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This book is suitable for low-level (A1 or A2) English learners. Each
unit represents around forty-five minutes of class time.
This book is divided into ten units. Over the course of the units,
students follow the adventures of several people as they realise Earth
is being invaded by aliens. Each of the ten units focuses on a specific
area of language or vocabulary. Each unit contains four sections:
1 Get ready
The unit begins with a short warm-up activity to introduce some of
the useful language and the situation.
2 The story
Students listen to a short scene from the story of an alien invasionand answer a simple question about it. They then follow a script of
the scene and listen for information that’s missing from the script
which helps them to answer a comprehension question.
3 The phrases
Students listen and repeat key phrases from the scene.
4 Your turn
Finally, students do a simple exercise with language from the story.
Then they use the story and the language to create and role-play
their own conversation in a similar situation.
All the audio is
available as an mp3
download.
Alien invasion flash cards
There are two sets of flash cards that cover vocabulary for an alien
invasion (after unit 5) and human resistance (after unit 10). There
are several ways you can use these pages in class:
Learn the words
Students match the words in the middle of the page to the
pictures. Then they cover the words with a piece of card and test
each other by pointing to pictures and asking ‘What’s that?’
Flash cards
Students cut up the pictures and write the words on the back.
They use these as flash cards to test each other on the vocabulary.
Memory gamePrint two copies of each page and cut out the pictures. Students
put all the pictures face down. They take turns playing a memory
game. They pick up a card, say the word and then pick up another
card. If the cards match, they keep the pair.
Story game
Cut up the pictures and put them face down in two piles. Students
take two cards from one pile and two cards from the other. They
have to make a short story or prepare a scene from an alien
invasion that includes the pictures they chose.
