European furniture and decorative arts is defined by its collectors. For centuries, they have gathered objects as diverse as early tapestries, export porcelains, neoclassical furniture, silver, and

objets de vertu creating personal environments that reflect their

times and taste. In this sale, we are fortunate to have core objects

that are excellent examples of this tradition. Early works of art

from the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art open the

sale, leading us to fine examples with important provenances

both in Europe and in the United States.

Highlights of the sale include The Hamilton Palace Table,

commissioned by the 10th Duke of Hamilton for a now-lost

Renaissance pietra dura top. The table was sold in the famed

1882 sale of the collections of Hamilton Palace, and found its

way to the Gilded Age splendor of Belcourt Castle in Newport,

Rhode Island. This dramatic baroque style giltwood table is a

bold example of bravura carving and gilding. In contrast, French

taste is represented by the restrained elegance of a suite of

Restauration bois clair furniture from the Chateau de Monteul

that joined the legendary collection of James McIlhenny on

Rittenhouse Square. Other examples from this suite are in the

collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Always a favorite

of collectors, Grand Tour objects are represented in this sale by

an important set of cameo casts after the antique by Paoletti

the largest group ever to come to auction.

Silver forms a stand-alone sale, presenting a range of important

pieces. The sale features a unique gold-inlaid silver tea and coffee

service by Tiffany & Co. The service, executed in an unusual

fusion of Arts & Crafts and Art Deco, was a special commission

presented to philanthropist W. Alton Jones that has descended in

the family to the present owner. As a Depression-era investor in

Tiffany & Co., it is likely that this service was given to Jones as a

gift for his contribution to the company. Another exotic piece is

a silver gilt kovsh by Faberge in a Slavic moderne style, with a

handle in the form of a Firebird holding a pendant jewel in its beak.

We trust that a new generation of collectors will be drawn to the

exuberant diversity of European decorative arts.

provenance:Jointly owned by Ann Blyth Barnes Steere, Elizabeth Barnes Halsted, and

Judith Barnes Luke.Nancy Rintoul Barnes.By descent in the family.Acquired by Angus Jacob Rintoul purportedly from the Chinese Imperial

family, circa 1810.note:The history of this necessaire begins in China, where it was purportedly acquired by Angus Jacob Jake Rintoul (1783-1840) from the Chinese

Imperial family in the first quarter of the 19th century. Born in Glasgow,

Rintoul moved to Edinburgh at the age of 15 to apprentice as a ship chandler. At 17, he is recorded as third officer on a merchant ship engaged in tradewith the Orient, and by his early 20s he had risen to first officer, havingdeveloped a swashbuckling reputation battling pirates in the Far East.Family records indicate that he traveled to Canton (now Guangzhou) andbecame acquainted with the Imperial family, who were residing in the areaduring a heavy monsoon season and for whom he reportedly negotiatedtrade and protection agreements against pirates in the South China Sea.Nevertheless, the palace was marauded and family record goes on to statethat it is uncertain whether the ladies companion was obtained by Jake as aresult of pursuing the looting pirates or whether it was given as a token ofgratitude by the Imperial family for services rendered. How the necessaire arrived in China is equally unclear-whether part ofcommercial trade or looted from a British settlement-but it has beensuggested that it was given to an Imperial princess, probably Gurun PrincessHexiao (1775-1823), for her twelfth birthday.Having survived the looting of the palace, Rintoul returned to Europe, pursuing less adventurous mercantile business for the familys whiskey trade. He disappeared in 1840 on a trip to Antwerp, and the necessaire hasremained in the family by descent from his two children. The form of this necessaire bears notable similarities to examples by JamesCox (1723-1800), particularly the upper portion of an exceptional musicaland automaton table clock with necessaire, sold Christies London, June 7,2007, Lot 125. Another similar example was sold Christies New York, April19, 2002, Lot 51.$8,000-12,000See also illustration on inside front cover.

note:Brothers John (1754-1835) and William Cary (1759-1825)established themselves in London as globe manufacturers atthe end of the 18th century, producing their first examples in1791. With Johns training in map engraving and Williamsspecialty in nautical instruments, the brothers turned tocartography, creating highly accurate globes from new mapplates of their own design. Their globes have long beenregarded among the finest produced in England during theGeorgian and Regency periods of exploration.Johns sons, George (1788-1859) and John, Jr. (1791-1852),joined the firm in 1820 and the workshop was moved from itsoriginal home at 181 The Strand to a larger studio at 86 St.Jamess Street. The present pair of globes was designed in1816, the last to be made with maps exclusively by John, Sr.and William, and produced in 1826 after the design wasupdated to reflect recent cartographical discoveries. After the1820s, the firm was taken over by John, Jr. and George, continuing to operate as J. & G. The frres Montgolfier, Joseph-Michel (1740-1810) and Jacques-tienne (1745- 1799), were amongthe earliest of French aviators andare credited with the invention ofthe worlds first globe aerostatique, orhot air balloon. From a prosperousfamily of paper manufacturers inAnnonay, southeastern France, thebrothers demonstrated ingenuityfrom an early age. By 1782 theywere experimenting with techniquesinvolving small chambers heated byburning paper, and tested their firstballoon form in late 1782.On June 4, 1783, they made theirfirst public demonstration in

Annonay using a balloon of clothand paper, which was executed withgreat success. Later that yeartienne became the worlds firstaeronaut, lifting off on October 15,1783. In January 1784, after severalfurther successes, a largedemonstration was planned forLyon. On January 19, in front of acrowd of 100,000 people, Josephtook flight for the first time, accompanied by several Frenchnobles. Sadly the flight was doomed, ending dramatically with the balloonin flames, but fortunately none ofthe passengers was hurt.At the same time, two younger

brothers, the frres Robert, Anne-Jean (1758-1820) and Nicolas-Louis(1760-1820), were alsoexperimenting with early aviationtechniques. The frres Robert weretrained engineers from Paris workingtogether with a professor namedJacques Charles, who was the firstto propose a hydrogen balloonmodel. They launched their firstmanned hydrogen balloon flight inParis on December 1, 1783.They next began experimenting witha dirigible form, which they hoped tosteer with rudder and oars. Theirdirigible had its first trip on July 15,1784, traveling from Saint-Cloud to

Meudon, and its second onSeptember 19, 1784 from Paris toBeuvry. Though the steeringmechanisms ultimately proveduseless, this second attempt wasthe first long-distance flight over100 kilometers. This collection of four layeredreverse-painted glass panels depictthese early advances in flight. Like adiorama or stage set, they rely onflat layers to enhance the illusion ofdepth so essential to creating animage of altitude and distance. Anearly form of illustration, thistechnique was used by both Romanand medieval artists beforeflourishing in the early 19th century, when the present two lots werepainted.

As asculptor, Lansere was knownprimarily for his Russian and

ethnographic genre studies, as wellas animalier. The son of statecouncilor Ludwig Paul (Aleksandr)Lansere (1815-1869), Lansere grewup in a privileged noble family, entering the local gymnasium whereit was noted at a young age that hewas already a talented renderer ofhorses. In 1861 he moved to SaintPetersburg with his family, where hecompleted his education. In 1867and 1876 he traveled to Paris, wherehe studied sculpture as well as themethodology of bronze casting.Following his first stint in Paris hereturned to Russia in 1868, whenthe original of the present lot wassculpted. In 1872 he received the

title of Artist First Class from theImperial Academy of Arts and 1874he was recognized as anAcademician; from 1879 he wasalso a member of the MoscowSociety of Fine Arts.Lansere began his public careerexecuting private commissions asunique casts, but the popularity ofhis work convinced Lansere to sellthe license to cast his works to theChopin, Sazikov, and Grachevfoundries. These makers beganreplicating his work and creating thelarge numbers of casts we see todayof varying quality. This bronze is stamped with Sokolovfoundry marks. The A. N. SokolovFoundry was founded in 1856 and

quickly became one of the foremostfoundries in Moscow, executingcasts for N. Lieberich. Known forworking closely with sculptors,Sokolov owned and cast the veryfirst of Lanseres Troika groups in1869, and was noted for his highquality casts. Unfortunately, Sokolovwas unable to compete with thelarger Woerffel and Chopinfoundries in Saint Petersburg in the1880s, and was forced to closed hisfoundry.$10,000-15,000
