Founded on the whim of King Louis IX, the fortified town of Aigues-Mortes is steeped in history and remarkably well preserved. The town's
past is deeply intertwined with St Louis and his crusades, with a story that deserves to be told. It dates back to the mid 13th century, at a
time when Camargue was inhospitable and dominated by swamps – which is where the name Aigues-Mortes came from, Aigas Mòrtas,
meaning "stagnant waters" in the local language Occitan. Yet it was here that Louis IX decided to construct the Kingdom of France's first
port with access to the Mediterranean, where he would coordinate the spectacular departure of thousands of men on the Seventh and
Eighth Crusades. Culturespaces has created a documentary to tell the story of the town's origins, "Aigues-Mortes, the port for the Cru-
sades". The film is due for release in February 2014. A fantastic opportunity to celebrate 800 years since the birth of St Louis.
