COMMAS
Commas can be easily overseen. Here
is a list of 5 easily mistaken problems
people have when it comes to misusing
commas.
Use commas to separate independent clauses
when they are joined by any of these seven
coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor,
so, yet.
Example:
I like ketchup, but I do not like tomatoes.
Use a comma to separate the elements in
a series (three or more things), including
the last two.
Example:
He ran to the store, got what he needed,
and ran back home.
Use commas when talking to
someone.
Example:
Correct: Time to eat, Grandma.
Incorrect: Time to eat Grandma.
Use commas between a state and city and
a date and the year.
Example:
Correct: I was born in Rhinebeck, NY on September 28 th,
1991.
Incorrect: I was born in Rhinebeck NY on September 28 th
1991.
Use a comma to set off or separate
nonessential words or phrases in a sentence
from the main clause of the sentence.
Example:
“Caitlin, my friend, is sitting next to me while
I do my presentation.”
