Triad Discussion: Comparing/Constrasting Q & A and

“Slumdog Millionaire”

Directions: This is a timed discussion activity! You will be given a citizenship grade based on your focus, thoughtfulness and professionalism during this discussion.

1. Choose one person to be the recorder. This person is responsible for taking notes during the discussion on the note taking template (but also participates in the discussion).

2. Choose one person to be the task master. This person is responsible for keeping the discussion focused and on task.

3. Choose one person to be the reporter. This person share the recorder’s notes with the whole class at the end of the discussion activity.

4. After you have chosen your roles, you will use your answers to the homework questions as the starting point of your discussion. Also, follow all of the instructions on the note-taking template to help you take your discussion to the next level.

Partner Work: Evaluating Our Unit Two Essay Outlines

Directions: Once your outline is complete, work with a partner to give and receive feedback on the effectiveness of your outline before moving on to writing your first draft. Answer the questions on the chart below and use post-it notes to write suggestions and post them on specific sections of the rubric.

Quote Sharing Activity

Directions: For this activity you were required to write the three quotes you selected for your essay on white paper (one quote per paper). Make sure you included the page number where the quote can be located. Tape your quotes to the wall after you finish your Do Now. Then:

1. Walk around the room with post-it notes. When you read a quote that you think matches your thesis and essay question then put a post-it note with your initials next to the quote.

2. When you have finished reading all quotes then return to your assigned seat.

3. Next you will work with a partner to contextualize one quote that you both identified as connected to your thesis/essay question.

4. Then you will trade paragraphs with another pair and grade each other’s paragraphs using the essay rubric.

Notes on Contextualization

What is Contextualization?• Explanation of what is going on in a larger text before and after you insert a

quote into a piece of writing so that the quote makes sense to the reader of your essay (even if they didn’t read the book you’re writing about).

How do I do it? • Introduce your quote by briefly explaining what was happening in the book at

the time of your quote (without going into too much plot summary). • Tell the reader who is speaking in the quote, who they are speaking to, what

their relationship is. Where do I do it? • In all three body paragraphs of your essay– both before and after the quote. • Your contextualization leads into your analysis of the quote (explanation of

how the quote supports your thesis and why it’s important).

Partner Work: Contextualizing a key quote

from the novel

Directions: Work with a partner to write a body paragraph using the quote that you both identified as related to your thesis statement.

1. Start your paragraph by introducing the quote: explain what was happening at this

point in the novel. 2. Explain who is speaking, or who the quote is about. 3. Explain why this is an important quote. (this leads you into the first part of your

analysis).

Example: After Ram flees Mumbai, he ends up working for and living with the Taylors. The Taylors are an Australian family living in India as diplomats. Ram is impressed with their wealth and fascinated by their Western lifestyle. The Taylors trust Ram and he becomes closer to them than to the other servants. He even begins to imagine that they are his real family, “Although I live in the servants’ quarters, The Taylors treat me almost as part of the family” (p. 110). Ram’s use of the word “almost” is important. The Taylors are condescending towards Ram and treat him more like a pet than family. A part of Ram realizes this and this is evident in his use of the word “almost”, but he has never had a real family before and is happy to have any kind of family connection, even a false one.

Identify the components of a concluding paragraph and explain how the conclusion is both similar to and different from the introductory paragraph. Compose a first draft of their unit two essays.

Analysis• Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or idea

(your thesis) into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it.

• Your analysis needs to be specifically tied to the quote and needs to make specific and clear connections between your quote and your thesis statement.

• Your analysis needs to explain why your quote is important/significant and how it connects to your thesis.

• Your analysis should come after your contextualization and after your quote.

• Your contextualization should lead into your analysis.

LG/SWBAT:Summarize the qualities of good analysis in the body paragraphs of an essay and explain the connection between contextualization and analysis.

Elements of a Concluding Paragraph

• You need to begin your concluding paragraph by revisiting your thesis statement in new words. In other words, do not simply copy and paste your thesis into your conclusion!

• Synthesize– pull together the three ideas you developed in your body paragraphs– explain the connection between the three examples you wrote about in the body of your essay.

• Explain the relevance between your thesis and the world.
