English 10-2 Critical Essay: Romeo and Juliet
In the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet’s deaths were based
on six days of rushed passion. It is a story of old-hatred overcome by young love. Romeo and Juliet’s decisions have taken no thought
for the past or for the future. The atmosphere is one of passion and swiftness since consuming love requires haste. Their love ends
in a “love-devouring death”and as a result, the whole play seems as if it is “rushed”.
Essay Topic:
HOW DOES THE “RUSHED ATMOSPHERE” (hasty decisions) OF ROMEO AND JULIET CONTRIBUTE TO THE TRAGEDY OF THE YOUNG LOVERS?
Things to consider to help organize your essay:
• Make note of THREE MAIN INCIDENTS in the play where “hasty decisions” played a part in complicating the situation for the two young lovers. How do these events support the idea that HASTE led to the tragedy of the young lovers?• Do you think that Romeo and Juliet would have been together forever if they had been more cautious and thoughtful in their actions?•Choose quotes that have significant meaning to the topic and supports what you have to say about the incidents you chose to connect to the essay topic. Never end or start a paragraph with a quote.
