New England came into contact with the bloodiest skirmish in 1643 known as the Pequot war. To prevent more casualties, Massachusetts bay, Plymouth, New Haven and Connecticut joined together to form the New England Confederation. The main purpose on the confederation was to find a way to prevent fights against the Native Americans. The confederation also meant defense against the Dutch, Spanish and New France colonies. In case of runaway slaves, the confederation also returned them back.

King James II established the Navigation Acts to

increase military power.

This meant that all New England colonies had to

unite with each other.

When New York and New Jersey were taken over

by New England, those two states were recognized

as the “Greater New England”

After 1684, the Glorious Revolution, the Dominion of

New England fell when King James II was

apprehended.

The struggle for power of New England was one

reason that lead to the American Revolution.
