Co-Leader message

The air was electric in the room. Over 500 delegates in a conference room at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, watched in anticipation as the petite woman walked to the podium. But Governor General Michaëlle Jean's words conveyed a large-than-life spirit, one that echoed the sentiment of so many others in this city. Her energy and vision is an example of how Canada can become a model global citizen.

Look around this city, and you will feel the sense of responsibility that Jean speaks of. Look a little closer and you will see opportunities that exist right here in Calgary that can help create positive change in the lives of those who "weren't so lucky." You will see Calgarians making the connection between how their actions here can help build the capacity of a farmer in Zambia, enabling her to improve her livelihood through the use of simple appropriate technologies.

The Governor General shares EWB's vision to "make poverty history" and, in her speech, reiterated the fact that the end of extreme poverty for developing communities will not occur without unwavering support from countries like Canada. The 12 members of our Chapter Leadership Team are dedicated to this challenge.

Our Chapter has programs in the areas of Education, Workplace Outreach and Fundraising to engage Calgary professionals in human development. Over the past 12 months, we have held over 30 events, helped host Canada’s largest international development conference and have been covered by CBC Radio and major newspapers across Alberta.

START HERE is the theme of the Engineers Without Borders Calgary Professional Chapter 2006/07 Annual Report. The end of extreme poverty for developing communities relies on support from countries like Canada. And the nearly 700 professionals engaged in our Chapter believe the time for this extraordinary change is now and the place to start is here.

Thulasy Balasubramaniam and Jeremy Barretto Co-Leaders, EWB Calgary Professional Chapter

2.start learning “Previous to the conference, I met George Roter [EWB co-CEO and co- Founder] a couple of times and my opinion of him was good. After his Collaboration Day Luncheon speech, my opinion of him and EWB sky rocketed. George hit the ball out of the park.”

- EWB Collaboration Day Participant

The EWB Calgary Professional Chapter Education program aims to create a “community of international development champions” in Calgary. The Chapter organises Education and Action Meetings, Conferences, and External Education discussions and presentations. These programs provide participants with the knowledge and tools required to contribute effectively to international development. With an “in-Canada” focus, the content encourages participants to lead pro-development change within Canada – in their lives, at work, and in the government.

Education and Action Meetings Education and Action meetings engage participants to increase awareness, knowledge and interest in human development issues. Education Sessions typically take the form of facilitated discussions where EWB members with various levels of experience have the opportunity to participate and share their experiences.

Prior to the EWB National Conference in January 2007, Education and Action Meetings focused on the foundational topics of EWB, which included:

- EWB’s approach to international development overseas - EWB’s approach in Canada - The role of professional chapters in EWB

After the conference a series of three Education and Action meetings turned our attention to EWB’s “Three Pillars” for Change in Canada:

- Changing government policies that affect developing communities - Role of EWB professional chapters in the Canadian private sector - Individual choices/actions, how we can contribute to poverty reduction

2007 EWB National Conference in Calgary True to the theme of the conference “Leaders for Change”, the delegation of more than 500 students and professionals from across the country was eager to build leadership at a personal, chapter, organizational, and national level. The addresses by great leaders such as Governor General Michaëlle Jean, University of Alberta President Dr. Indira Samarasekera, and Oxfam Canada President Robert Fox were inspiring. They encouraged EWB members to keep forging ahead and outlined some of the challenges and opportunities in international development.

Delegates began to consider their individual contributions to human development in three areas: development advocacy in Canada, including government, universities and individual citizens, leadership in overseas development and corporate social responsibility. The Conference Team remarked, “the calibre of questions at the different sessions is a testament to the depth of understanding [EWB] members have of complex development issues.” At the same time, the EWB spirit of camaraderie and family shone through all four days of the conference.

Collaboration Day, held on the second day of the conference, focused on corporate social responsibility and the role of the business sector in development. Over 150 professionals from the Calgary area participated in the daylong event.

George Roter, EWB co-CEO and co-Founder, delivered a keynote presentation urging delegates to help EWB make an impact in developing countries from Canada. Delegates interacted with representatives from EWB, Shell, Nexen and the United Nations Global Compact through various panel discussions and workshops. Collaboration Day engaged professionals in human development issues and delegates came away empowered in their role as socially conscious citizens.

External Education The goal of External Education is to inform professionals and the general public of issues related to international development. External Education plays an important part in EWB Canada’s goal to make Canada a “model global citizen”. Partners for External Education events include Young Environmental Professionals (YEP), the Sustainable Practices Action Network (SPAN), and the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation and Technology (CAWST). EWB hosted a variety of events throughout the year including:

- Development in Areas of Conflict - U of C Professor Pablo Policzer & Colombian Juliana Garcia gave their insights on poverty reduction, the effect of political unrest on development, and the situation of displaced people who move to the cities from rural areas

- Is water the new oil? - Water issues in developing countries and how Albertans can take action! Speaker: Shauna Currie, Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST)

- Facilitated discussion after screening of 'Maquilapolis' and 'Borderless' at the Calgary International Film Festival and ‘Forgive Our Debts’ at the Marda Loop Justice Film Festival - "From Rimby to Rwanda and other assorted tales from an EWB volunteer" Barbecue and talk by Paul Slomp, a long-term EWB overseas volunteer and Junior Fellow Support Staff in Bowness Park education numbers

EWB Member Profile: Janelle Murray Joined EWB Feb 6, 2007 – Already making a huge impact

“As we were creating a plan for the future of the workplace outreach program, Janelle stepped in and took the most tasking of roles without as much as a shrug. She agreed to coordinate all workplace workshops, knowing full well we have a whole bunch coming our way, and our communications with the workplace ambassadors still needs to be defined. The next day, she sent an email out about the workshop she had already confirmed!”

- Binnu Jeyakumar, EWB Calgary Professional Chapter, Workplace Outreach Director

The Workplace Outreach program provides effective presentations to the corporate community to introduce EWB at the workplace and is the first step in engaging professionals. Workplace Outreach presentations feature “Root Causes of Poverty” workshops and profile the work of EWB volunteers, both overseas and in Canada.

This was a breakthrough year for our Workplace Outreach program, with major successes in training and innovation. At present, we have over 15 volunteers who are trained to facilitate workshops. Most of these members joined shortly after the EWB National Conference in January 2007. Presenting has been a fantastic way to engage new members; they learn about human development, EWB’s approach and then share this knowledge with others. Presentations are organized by workplace ambassadors, volunteers who represent EWB at their company. Ambassadors encourage their fellow employees to support international development initiatives.

A program-defining innovation came on Wednesday September 20th at Cimarron Engineering in southeast Calgary. The Chapter Outreach Team was able to convey EWB’s approach and culture to Cimarron employees through the “Root Causes of Poverty” workshop, an interactive introductory workshop to human development. Small groups of professionals sat down with Post-its and discussed possible causes and symptoms of poverty for the life of a typical farmer that EWB works with overseas.

The incorporation of this workshop format, along with the increasing number of volunteers and workplace ambassadors has significantly increased the Chapter’s capacity to approach companies; two presentations are completed per month with less effort than it took to set-up and run one previously! The EWB Calgary Professional Chapter now shares its Workplace Outreach model with other professional chapters across the country.

EWB Day The over-arching goal for the annual EWB Day event is to, “increase the number of engaged and aware Canadians in order to build a population that will make Canada the most pro-poor country in the world.” EWB Day is celebrated nationally on March 1st and the theme for 2007 was, “Envisioning the End of Extreme Poverty.” The Professional Chapter, in collaboration with the University of Calgary EWB Chapter, delivered 3900 mock newspapers during the day-long event. These newspapers, dated 2025, announced the end of extreme poverty and gave readers a glimpse of what the world could be like after poverty became a thing of the past.

The articles inside outlined the actions individuals, corporations and governments had taken to get there. 1350 newspapers were distributed to 16 workplaces through

our workplace ambassadors, and volunteers at C-Train stations around the city distributed 2268 papers during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Chapter Visit The EWB Calgary Professional Chapter organized presentations for EWB co-CEO George Roter and Director of Chapter Development Levi Goertz at Nexen and Shell on September 26, 2006. These companies have strong EWB Ambassadors and were selected as they are large employers of professionals in Calgary and have well-established Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

George and Levi delivered a message of how professionals and corporations can help EWB promote human development. These presentations proved fruitful, as Nexen and Shell were major sponsors and active participants in the 2007 EWB National Conference held in Calgary. Representatives from these companies are now assisting EWB Canada to develop programs that will engage corporations in human development.

Thulasy Balasubramaniam, our first Overseas Volunteer, graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2005 and works in Integrity Management at Pangea Solutions in Calgary. As a co-Leader of the Calgary Professional Chapter, Thulasy has led two major conferences, facilitated educational workshops and delivered workplace presentations to hundreds professionals.

Thulasy was selected from applicants across the country for a 1-3 year EWB overseas placement in Zambia starting in July 2007. She will work in partnership with a local organization to build their capacity in implementing simple but appropriate technologies. She is excited about this volunteer opportunity and feels that her experience working in Calgary will be an asset overseas. The Chapter will connect her work in Africa with professionals in Calgary throughout her placement in Zambia.

“That night at the Celebrate!Africa fundraiser on March 1 – EWB Day, I just felt an overwhelming sense of community. I looked around the room and saw old members, new members, people from other organizations in Calgary, representation from a variety of companies...it was great. When I think about our community of international development champions, I think about that night.”

- Thulasy Balasubramiam, co-Leader EWB Calgary Professional Chapter

The goal of the Fundraising team is to build and foster relationships with Calgary professionals to make EWB their “charity of choice”. This goal includes exploring different fundraising avenues like corporate donations, individual donations, and merchandise sales, as well as forming a Corporate Advisory Board. These activities connect back to the Chapter’s mission “to engage Calgary professionals to promote human development”. Making a donation is an accessible means of personal engagement for many professionals.

2007 EWB National Conference Sponsorship A team of 40 volunteers organized the EWB National Conference held in Calgary, January 2007. The Professional Chapter assisted by connecting the conference team with our workplace ambassadors at various companies. This strategy proved successful; $88,500 was raised from Calgary corporations enabling 500 delegates from across the country to participate in the conference. Six conference sponsors are now also participants in the Chapter’s Workplace Outreach program.

Membership Drive The Chapter organized a membership drive from February 26 to March 1, 2007 to coincide with APEGGA’s National Engineering and Geoscience Week and EWB Day. The desired outcomes for this membership drive were to:

- Raise $2500 in new funding for EWB’s programs - Increase awareness of international development - Increase our paid Regular Membership to 100 Calgary professionals

Throughout the week, five major events were held including a pub presentation, three Workplace Outreach presentations, and a social mixer. The membership drive engaged over 200 professionals, raised $2,450 and attracted 120 members. This membership base will provide $4,800 in annual sustainable funding for the Chapter. A longer-term aspiration for the Chapter is to engage 0.7% of the 35,000-strong Calgary engineering community as regular EWB members. This percentage relates to Canada’s long-term commitment to foreign aid as a percentage of our GDP.

In the Fall of 2006, a four-member Corporate Advisory Board was formed to provide feedback to the Chapter Fundraising Team’s major initiatives. The Board is an effective tool for the Chapter to engage more senior professionals and improve the quality of our fundraising events.

A “Taste the Opportunity” wine tasting event has been planned for May 2007 to engage more individual donors in the work of EWB.
